Andrew returning to public life

"Prince Andrew — who recently paid a multimillion-pound settlement to Virginia Giuffre to keep her allegations of sexual abuse, which he denies, out of court — is set to make a controversial return to public life on Monday.

As a member of the Order of the Garter, this country’s oldest and most senior order of chivalry, Andrew, 62, will appear alongside senior members of the royal family at the Garter Day service at Windsor Castle."

Eugenie and family are reported to have made a 'shock' move to Portugal and will be splitting their time between there and KP.

Wonder if it's a bit of a flounce because H&M are keeping their mitts on Toad Hall and W&K have strolled off with the 'earmarked' gaff?

MaulPerton · 14/06/2022 10:39

As it happens, the crowd were able to boo Tony Blair instead (over Iraq, presumably)

Perhaps the crowd were highlighting that we all know how these people reward each other and plunder the taxpayer - rebuilding contacts to friends after a war, PPE contracts to friends during a health crisis, houses to minor royals, several to Will and Kate alone, that sort of thing. It's a bit like the Oscars. They award and reward each other ad infinitum.

Mamamia7962 · 14/06/2022 11:04

NoRegrets - You're the one spouting nonsense with the "all she does is just waves", but I expect you know that she does much more than that.

No one can answer your other question, because we have never had an elected Head of State so only if that ever happens would we know the answer to that.

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 14/06/2022 11:23

So tell me what she does then??? Still no answer to what I imagine should be a surprisingly easy question.

But apparently not.

And this is what the RF relies on - it would appear that never complain never explain covers not just the monarchy but her loyal subjects.

Roussette · 14/06/2022 11:34

The need to drop the never explain as they do complain

Just seen a story out that K&W are going for 'a simpler life with less burden on the taxpayer' moving to a place on the Windsor estate
Do they think we're stupid! They are *adding" a house to Amner Hall and KP, how can that be reducing the burden on the taxpayer?

More helicopters to where they flit off to. An unused house being maintained even if there aren't live in staff

my heart bleeds for them Hmm.

I thought PW was big into climate change and all that, like his Daddy. But maintaining and heating three rather large houses, and as you say flitting from here to there by chopper doesn't really say "environmentalist" to me.

There is an odour of hypocrisy off all of them. Run with the hare, and chase with the hounds kind of thing. What is the cause du jour? Let's follow that one for now, it will be popular with the serfs.

antelopevalley · 14/06/2022 12:15

William like Charles likes to lecture the plebs about climate change, but do not think for a minute that means they think they have to reduce their carbon footprint.

Yeah, just tell the Africans to stop having kids while you expand your own family, swan round on private jets and drive gas guzzlers between your various residences. Nice life.

antelopevalley · 14/06/2022 12:43

And lots and lots of helicopter flights instead of a private car.

And lots and lots of helicopter flights instead of a private car.

That is justified often, because of security concerns. But I still no like!

Mamamia7962 · 14/06/2022 14:40

It's not down to me to tell you what she does, A quick Google will tell you what her daily duties are ( not so much now that she's 96 understandably). It will also tell you how she's been useful to the country during her 70 year reign, a few examples of which I gave up thread. The information is out there if you care to look, but if you want to believe that she "just turns up and waves" that's up to you.

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 14/06/2022 15:12

So still not one example of anything she does that she’s uniquely qualified to do that an elected head of state couldn’t do?

Enough said.

I did care to look. The "information" on the royal websites is propaganda. They are hoping, rightly it seems, that most people can't tell the difference.

SpinMeARiver · 14/06/2022 15:28

The only thing she's uniquely qualified to do over a republican Head of State is produce a hereditary heir.

Mamamia7962 · 14/06/2022 16:24

NoRegrets - I haven't said that an elected Head of State wouldn't be able to do what the Queen does, but whether they would be able to do it just as well is something that I will probably never find out during my lifetime.

I am not going to repeat things that I have said earlier on this thread. The Queen is still very popular as the Platinum Jubilee showed. Whether that popularity remains for Charles and William after the Queen passes away, we will have to wait and see.

Roussette · 14/06/2022 16:38

The rate they are carrying on I seriously doubt it. Obviously with the jubilee and all the fluffy fuzzy goodwill, today is the day Kate and William announced they are moving to yet another great big pile.
After £12m spent on KP renovating it to how they wanted, they're moving on but keeping the other 3 palaces and houses. They call the cottage at Windsor modest and say they don't want to burden the taxpayer. . It's a bit late for that!
Modest my arse. Here's their 4 residences
It's all getting beyond a joke

Andrew returning to public life
Raspberryjam22 · 14/06/2022 16:47

Anmer was a gift from HM and KP remains their official residence where their staff are based .
Adelaide Cottage is small by royal comparisons . Lots of MNetters ( including me) have more than 4 bedrooms !
What is the 4th property ?

TequilaSunriseforme · 14/06/2022 16:48

I though Eugenie was moving to another country part time as Jack has got a job abroad? Why can’t they buy their own bloody houses? They both work!

Raspberryjam22 · 14/06/2022 16:48

But of course K and C can’t do anything right in some peoples eyes!

Raspberryjam22 · 14/06/2022 16:49

Eugenie will be spending part of her time in Portugal and will have Nottingham Cottage as her London base .

FoiledByTheInsect · 14/06/2022 17:00

I used to bemoan the demise of stand-up comedy, but tbh threads like these are even better.

Adelaide 'Cottage'.... the word belies its size. It's actually two massive houses, I presume the staff will be in one of them?
It does look very striking in this article.

The DFail has gone from calling it generously sized a few years ago to 'modest' today.

I think you will see from the pics and article it is not 'modest'. If that's modest, I want it! I can afford modest😕

The 4 are Amner Hall, Kensington Palace, this new Adelaide 'Cottage' and Tam-Na-Ghar Cottage on the Balmoral Estate. As the pics show, they are not what I'd call a cottage!

SpinMeARiver · 14/06/2022 17:19

God all these modest cottages. It's like old Marie Antoinette and her sheep with their pretty leads of blue ribbons 'like the peasants live'.

(It was on Blue Peter so it must be true.)

antelopevalley · 14/06/2022 17:27

Or William or Catherines apartment in Kensington Palace only 54 rooms.
