I've read so much about how she is frail/dying/already dead etc. and I'm so pleased to see her looking happy and animated at the Royal Windsor Horse Show even if she is still not walking around. I hope she will be with us for many more years.

@TheFoldOx did I say 'soon'? I don't care how long it takes. That's my order preference. But then I'm not keen on men who gaslight women and tell everyone she's mad. Not to mention his 'friends' with unsavoury tastes.

EdithWeston · 13/05/2022 12:53

The Queen can't really retire - retirement isn't part of the role. She'd have to abdicate which isn't going to happen and abdication isn't as straight forward as her stopping and Charles taking her place - there's more legalities to it

She doesn't have to abdicate. She could retire by installing Charles as Prince Regent

SweetPetrichor · 13/05/2022 13:03

I think when you get to her age and do as much as she has you get to pick to save your energy for the things you love!

ShirleyPhallus · 13/05/2022 13:11

Really lovely to see her looking so well and smiling so much

Jesus you need to give your head a wobble.
She's 96
She's got mobility issues
Going to London walking about to get to where she needs to be in very formal clothes with a crown on top with mobility issues, I can see that would be just too much for her.
Tell me are your parents in their mid 90's? How much can they do? Sound mind or have they lost capacity? Most don't reach their 90's!

I finally persuaded my dad age 96 1/2 into using a wheelchair at the hospital to get him to his blood test about a month before he died. He quite liked it actually and told my brother to get him one the next time he went. However he didn't have the eyes of the world on him and his using a wheelchair being headline news.
I personally don't have a problem with her being driven a few minutes down the road to watch something she really enjoys and can be driven to the loo when she needs it or home when she's had enough in only a few minutes.

At that age I think it's fair enough she delegates the big ceremonial jobs to the heir and picks and chooses what she does.

I'm just pleased to see that's she's alive, well, happy and functioning still and not looking like she's about to drop dead.

And she is doing public duties, her duties are a lot more complex than you seem to understand.

SureHmm

PineMartenPeanutbutter · 13/05/2022 13:28

She looks very happy and seems to have have gained weight which is good. Nice to see her out and about.

MNHD · 13/05/2022 13:30

Oh my days. At 95 years old and still heading up the Firm I don't give a hoot if she was too unwell a few days ago but is recovering, I couldn't care less if pride is stopping her doing some duties but not others and I certainly don't care (nor do I think will she!) what others think she should or shouldn't do about retirement! It's bloody lovely to see her enjoying her horses and being around the people who mean a lot to her. I hope she has a large dose of port to celebrate her win and enjoys the fruits of the speciality food courts available, she owes us absolutely nothing!

I think your post is very off.

Not to go all MN on you, but seriously, give your head a wobble.

She's still doing duties that don't involve walking or standing about. She's phoning Bojo every week, for example.

Chilledchablis1 · 13/05/2022 13:32

@lameasahorse
“Does her red boxes? These are briefings and policy documents to keep her informed. It iss not work, it is to keep her informed so that she can do her work.
She has clearly been consistently one of the hardest workers in the Royal Family even as a very elderly woman doing more engagements than William and Kate combined. So no one can criticise her work ethic.
But she is simply too old now and needs to call it a day.”

I wondered how long it would take you to get a dig in about William and Catherine !

She is capable of doing her job. She is also capable of delegating delivery of her speeches and other work to her successor where that work is physically taxing. That doesn't mean she isn't doing all the behind the scenes stuff.

what difference does it make whether the Queen or Prince Charles delivers the Queen's speech?

SoupDragon · 13/05/2022 13:36

It's not like she's off loaded jobs onto the work experience person.

She looks really happy and cheerful today which is lovely to see. And she's already won a cup!

Only my own personal opinion, but I wondered if she'd stepped back yesterday to give Beatrice a chance in the spotlight - if so, there might be something similar for Eugenie over the celebration period.

Charles is not the de facto head of state. He is not Prince Regent. He deputises for the queen on some duties, but she is still the sovereign. He opened parliament on Tuesday in the name of Her Majesty, not on his own behalf.

What really is your issue here?

LaMarschallin · 13/05/2022 13:40

Chilledchablis1 · 13/05/2022 13:42

@lameasahorse I cannot believe you grudge a 96 year old lady a day out . Really ?

Aniita · 13/05/2022 13:45

She is also a patron of the Royal Windsor Horse Show, so her visit is also partially work. Albeit, probably one her more preferred duties!

And some of her horses are competing, so there is that too

Antarcticant · 13/05/2022 13:30

I wonder if she ever mentions the cost of living crisis which her "subjects" are having to cope with, in her weekly phone conversations. And what her Government can do, to actually do something real, to help people.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/05/2022 13:59

I would be sacked if I took that attitude

Your manager would likely be very understanding as you would be

  1. Over 90 years old
  2. Have worked for the company for 70 years
  3. Have never took a day off, or applied for any other jobs
  4. Already lined up the next 3 people who will fill the role after you retire
TigerLilyTail · 13/05/2022 14:01

Surely the Queen is the big boss and can do as she likes?

There are almost no British 'subjects' nowadays. The category was all but abolished nearly 40 years ago.

So why are you bleating on about her not doing her duties?

So if I broke my leg and couldn't go to work I shouldn't engage in any social events?
