Prince Harry not attending Philips memorial

It has been confirmed that Prince Harry will not be attending P Philips memorial service. What are people’s thoughts about this? Is the whole security issue a smoke screen for the fact he can’t face his family?
@Jconnais1chansonquivavsenerver - I don't really agree that the comparisons are appropriate. I mean for years and years and years it was boring William vs cool & fun Harry. Harry did some AWFUL things like dressing as a Nazi and calling his colleagues racist names, but was broadly forgiven despite not showing much remorse (if anything he thought he'd been wronged by the press for reporting it!) as the public liked him and felt sorry for him - William at the time would never have got away with that in a million, billion years.

Similarly Kate was monstered in the press (and Camilla, for decades) - it took her a long time to get used to the role, the press were not that nice to her for ages (they called her aloof, they called her horrible names before she was married, they didn't like the way she didn't pose for pictures, they were elitist and classist about her family, they were sexist and slut-shaming, she had topless photos taken on a long-lens published in France, etc). It took years of dedicated work for Kate to become as liked as she is now - and I agree to a certain extent that nobody should be treated as badly as that even if they're a public servant, but nevertheless Meghan isn't a like-for-like comparison because she only did it for a few months. Compare the way Meghan was treated in 2020 to the way Kate was treated in ~2006/7 or a few years before their marriage (or compare how Prince Harry is treated to how Prince William was treated literally any time before Harry became unpopular!).
Exactly right.

tigger2022 · 14/03/2022 16:52

I mean I think the way royal women are treated is awful in general... but it's wrong to compare Meghan 5-6 years in and only having worked for 1.5 years (when it doesn't seem like Harry actually explained the role to her that well to begin with...) to Kate who is 20 years in and worked for 11-12 years. There are also examples of royal women who have been treated much worse than Meghan... Fergie?! Camilla?!

(Also, and this is my own personal hill I'll die on, it always annoyed me that Eugenie and Beatrice are portrayed as silly and frivolous because they're girls, when they got exactly the same university grade or better as other royals who publicly announced theirs)

mummykel16 · 14/03/2022 16:54

Kate Got slagged off in the papers for things she did said and wore before she even met William, you have to accept the press, all of them, are horrible.
Daft making it a race issue

True
notanotheroneagain · 14/03/2022 16:56

Fergie and Camilla had affairs. I don't think that is an excuse to treat them badly btw. But things were outright made up about Meghan. Also a pile on all at the same time. Others were atleast given time to go through their pregnancies, she even had a miscarriage in the middle of all this ffs.

Actually I think it’s great that they are NOT “just accepting” that the press is awful. They should be held accountable.

Kate was indeed slagged off but the racial overtones of Meghan’s treatment are far worse. Plus the fact that Kate and Meghan do exactly the same and Kate is praised whereas Meghan is vilified

Yes exactly. The tabloid press are generally unpleasant. Look at revelations from around the Leveson Inquiry.

You just find it easier to call her names.

@PinaColada123456

Just a note for those who attempt to blame Harry and William's mother for her death, seatbelt or not, driver over the limit or not, if they hadn't been relentlessly chased by the paps, the driver wouldn't have driven at the speed he did or take the risks he did, towards the end to get rid of the paps. So they were very much the root cause of the crash.
Also, even in the aftermath of the crash, she was still getting papped.

TheRealBoswell · 14/03/2022 17:14

I’m not going to focus on Harry attending or not attending, what does it matter to other people so much? It’s up to his family what they think and feel. Perhaps they have their own private occasions planned that the public is not privy to? The royal family members are not public property so I don’t really care what they get up to as long as they’re held accountable for any crimes committed.

Lurking9to5 · 14/03/2022 17:14

Meghan must have her head in the sand. Kate was dragged by the media for TEN YEARS, but MM went on Oprah and said it didn't count, it was different. I don't think she did herself any favours there. Basically, other people's hurts and upsets don't count like mine do Confused

What fergie, camilla and beatrice and eugenie have been subjected to in the press has also been atrocious. And of course, Beatrice being less conventionally attractive than Eugenie has been trolled MORE. So typical. They're not contractually obliged to be conventionally beautiful btu they were still mocked and trolled for looking five pounds overweight or wearing an adventurous hat.

Interesting that their degrees were as good as William/Charles/Edward's but yeh, they've been portrayed in the past as flippertygibbets.

Roussette · 14/03/2022 17:17

Call it tosh by all means if that's your thing. It's just a stupid thing to say when there is printed proof, but hey... up to you

One bit of good news...

Samantha Markle's Twitter account has been suspended today. Incessant trolling and lies saying MM had surrogates, etc.

oh yes, and the fact that she chewed nicotine gum at william's passing out ceremony or coming out ceremony. Can't remember what it was called. Something at sandringham and the focus was on how tacky carole was.
Yeahthat · 14/03/2022 17:18

@Roussette

Buzzfeed and the like produce content to satisfy their customers. Even if it were true, they'd simply never have published an article stating "This shows that treatment of Megan Markle was broadly in line as that of others".

It's just confirmation bias and grifting - where victimhood gets parlayed into a lucrative career in activism.

Roussette · 14/03/2022 17:18

Yeah You will note I did 3 links.

notanotheroneagain · 14/03/2022 17:21

x post @Roussette

And you are correct this poster will not read, their mind is made up about H&M even though these headlines have been repeatedly shown on TV news etc.

This is so true. articles saying the media's treatment of MM when she was 3 years ''on the scene'' are exactly in line with the treatment kate received when she had been ''on the scene'' for three years - those articles aren't clickbait.

People want a villain, or an underdog. They got the same treatment three years in, that's not much of a headline.

I think if MM had stuck around and lasted 10 years, then the media would have moved on. They always do.
