The judge won't dismiss the case.

The BBC has just said that he has three choices:

  • settle out of court
  • defer, which means the ruling will automatically go against him
  • go to trial.

I can't see that any of those options will be attractive to him and he will have to finally face the consequences of his behaviour.

I'm so glad although I suspect he will want to settle out of court but none of the options are good for his reputation. I just wish more of these men were named but they will just continue to live their lives unaffected.

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/01/2022 14:44

Mummy will settle with her vast fortune. Which is rather disappointing.

FlibbertyGiblets · 12/01/2022 14:48

Yes I expect a settlement with no watchamacallit. Admission.

sadpapercourtesan · 12/01/2022 14:49

My hope is that VG will refuse to settle out of court and drag the dirty fucker to trial. I would.

girlmom21 · 12/01/2022 14:52

Of course he'll settle. And she's accepted a settlement from Epstein in the past so I don't see why she wouldn't accept another.

Then again, he's pretty stupid to not have already settled and got her to sign an NDA.

KenAdams · 12/01/2022 14:53

Fingers crossed @sadpapercourtesan

I hope not @MrsTerryPratchett, the RF are on extremely thin ice atm and I don't think her doing that would do them any favours

"My hope is that VG will refuse to settle out of court and drag the dirty fucker to trial. I would."

So would I, she has come this far so here is hoping she drags him to court.

I'm don't know about civil cases can he be sentenced or is it just a verdict and paying compensation?

Jumpingintomenopause · 12/01/2022 14:58

I don’t think Mummy will bail him out. He is rumoured to be selling his ski lodge to raise funds for mounting legal fees as he has to pay them himself now.

I agree the lady in question would be foolish to be seen financially supporting a settlement regardless of what purse if comes out of.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 12/01/2022 15:00

Mua ha ha.

I'd love to have seen the arrogant prick's face when he found out.

KenAdams · 12/01/2022 15:02

I bet Boris is thanking God his lucky stars for this news coming out today.

Zilla1 · 12/01/2022 15:09

BBC reported he recently paid the overdue outstanding £3m? balance for his £18m? chalet in Verbier as there was a suit as the seller was due to be paid the balance which they had agreed to delay previously and he needed to pay so he could then sell the chalet unencumbered. I think the BBC speculated it was to free funds for legal fees/a settlement.

KatherineJaneway · 12/01/2022 15:09

They'll settle and make her sign an NDA.

I believe VG has already said she won't settle as it's a message to rich, powerful men that they can behave in this way then pay off to get rid of any consequences.
Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 12/01/2022 15:15

The last time the victim settled it was through deception and she was very young.

She has spent her entire life trying to come to terms with what happened to her and then trying to get justice.

I really hope that he has to go to court, he is such a twat he will almost certainly talk himself into a conviction

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 12/01/2022 15:16

I really hope she doesn't settle.

I'm not sure she will settle - she is a woman on a mission to get him to publicly face what he has done.
MrsTerryPratchett · 12/01/2022 15:22

If I was a rich woman, I'd bung her a few mill NOT to settle.

MayThePawsBeWithYou · 12/01/2022 15:25

I think it should go to trial, let the jury decide and the judge decide on any settlement.

LivMumsnet · 12/01/2022 16:11

Afternoon all - we've moved this over to the Royal Family topic now.

@Mrsjayy

In a civil case there is no sentencing - that can only happen in a criminal case. My understanding (assuming the US system is vaguely similar the the UK) is that some of the other main differences between a civil case and a criminal cases are a) a private individual can start a civil case even if the authorities decide not to make any criminal charges and b) the level of proof needed for a civil case is slightly lower. Most civil cases are brought by individuals to make someone pay for having done something that was wrong but not a crime. However, in the UK, it's not uncommon for civil cases like this to be used as a way to get evidence etc out in to the open when the authorities have not made any criminal charges.

From what I have seen, this is not about the money for VG (if it was, I suspect she would have had plenty of opportunity to persuade PA to pay before now). As a pp said, her previous settlement with JE would have been when she was young, vulnerable and probably expected that he would wriggle out of a criminal charge. The situation is very different now.

OhWhyNot · 12/01/2022 16:26

It’s not a Royal topic it’s a headline news !

Very good news his arrogance is astounding

I don’t think his mother will bail him out

Mrsjayy · 12/01/2022 16:33

I don't think it's a Royal family appropriate subject was a move really necessary 🤔

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 12/01/2022 16:33

Yeah, not sure why it had to be moved. It's not a niche news item for royal fans as such.

KenAdams · 12/01/2022 16:41

Why the move @mnhq? It's headline news today.

Mrsjayy · 12/01/2022 16:42
