The royal family

In what capacity are Harry and Meghan visiting New York

IsabelBeck · 25/09/2021 10:20

They are no longer working members of the Royal Family so have they gone to New York as private citizens?

How do they get to meet with Chelsea Clinton at the WHO offices and UN officials and politicians?

According to the Mail (I know, I know) they had federal protection.

Do Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (as they are styled there) have much clout in the US? Why?

When did I say that?
Corrupt governments won’t make any effort to jump start the production, meaning their citizens won’t get a chance at getting vaccinated , best for vaccines to be distributed under the supervision of a global organization,

julieca · 30/09/2021 16:04

I have read lots of quality journalism about how rich countries have cornered the market for vaccinations at the expense of poorer countries.
So Harry and Meghan did not say anything inaccurate then. You simply disagree with them and want to criticise them. Yawn.

Coronateachingagain · 30/09/2021 16:09

They definitely do not need private jets. Or big black 4x4s, a more normal, still safe but environmentally friendly car would do. They are the ones pretending they need all of this - it is all a self fulfilling game.

On stage fright. Well yes he has said he gets incredibly nervous when speaking publicly. But hey if you wanna be an incredibly well paid "humanitarian" then there is some price to pay Grin

julieca · 30/09/2021 16:20

I have seen them about Sandringham area in their large 4x4s. Princess Diana used to drive an ordinary little car if she was driving herself.

Coronateachingagain · 30/09/2021 16:27

@julieca so does that justifies them alright? strange logic. Of course not. Nobody should be driving around a 4x4. This is not a question of us versus them as you seem to suggest. But maybe they cannot bear drive anything else if the RF does it - lessens the status you see.

julieca · 30/09/2021 17:19

@Coronateachingagain I was talking about William. If he drives a 4x4 because he cant bear the loss of status of driving a small car, the that is pathetic.

smilesy · 30/09/2021 18:37

The vexed question of vaccines is not as simple as Harry made it out to be. It is not like just “giving the recipe”to other countries. They need the know how and the equipment to make it, the specialist cold storage facilities in the case of mRNA vaccines, and the means for distribution. It is true that rich countries could do more, but it would be far better to supply other countries with already manufactured vaccines. It is also worth remembering that the Astra Zeneca vaccine was produced at cost and is far easier to distribute, but thanks to some disinformation, it is not popular in other countries. So Harry calling for IP’s to be revoked is over simplifying thing somewhat.

Gilmorehill · 30/09/2021 19:31

@smilesy absolutely. I was astonished when I heard him saying that on the radio. Producing a vaccine is not exactly the same thing as producing Coca Cola once you’ve been given the recipe.

Leibham · 30/09/2021 21:45

@julieca

Educate yourself firstly on how the vaccine production works and the conditions that would need to be met.

They blamed scientists not governments, they are idiots trying to come across as saviours.

If you have a grudge with William then this is probably another (long) topic! Do you really think William has a choice? He doesn't need to maintain status (unlike the brother) and not sure he really cares - he doesn't need to. Make no mistake, I am no particular fan either, time will tell!

And what about Harry and his 4x4s then?

Coronateachingagain · 30/09/2021 22:19

@smilesy yes rather shows the ignorance but also that they were not smart enough to get the right advice on their speech points. It shows they are living in a bit of a bubble.

julieca · 30/09/2021 22:41

@Leibham I know about cold chain storage. I was actually surprised by all the media coverage about the difficulties in transporting and keeping mrna vaccines cold. It is not at all difficult, just more costly.

You’re very naive. Fluctuations in electricity - which are part of daily life in developing countries- can make it very difficult to keep a constant temperature in refrigerators, never mind manufacturing plants. The vaccine rollout in developing countries is not straightforward. Harry really needs better people around him to advise him- he’s not bright enough to figure out by himself.

Marmaladeagain · 30/09/2021 23:07

Naive really doesn't cover it.....Shock throwing some money at developing countries would sort out the problems with for example the fluctuating electricity supply (amongst the many, many other issues).....blind to facts.

There are other forms of vaccine delivery being developed all the time - guess what the scientists of the world are getting on with their amazing work without the banal platitudes from H&M that everyone should be doing better... yawn. Imagine the ego to have no shame to stand up the way they did on a stage talking absolute nonssense Grin

Harry telling scientists what they should be doing is really quite funny. You're very naughty scientists (oblivious to the facts that it's not as easy as giving vaccines away). It's like Homer Simpson on tour.

Viviennemary · 30/09/2021 23:09

Better still he needs to stop dabbling and pontificating in things he knows nothing about. He is becoming an embarrassment.

julieca · 30/09/2021 23:21

@Gilmorehill sorry you don't know what you are talking about. Yes there are challenges. The company I work for deals with this in developing countries and in remote areas. It costs money. It is perfectly possible to do.

My feelings too
julieca · 30/09/2021 23:35

The vaccines could be distributed. It takes political will and money.
And have you even been to these countries that desperately need vaccines? Places like Uganda, Zambia, South Africa? They are not places with people living in huts and no electricity you know.
In terms of distribution, you keep vaccines in a central place with a backup generator. You take out smaller amounts of vaccine that can be kept at the right temperature in a fridge powered by a cars cigarette lighter, or even a very well insulated container with no power source and inbuilt thermometer.
Its not rocket science. There are logistical difficulties of course. Britain logistics were easier as they had the NHS and still it was a logistical challenge. In countries without one overarching health body it is harder, but it happens with other vaccines. The logistical challenges are overcome.

Marmaladeagain · 30/09/2021 23:38

?!?!
Sorry absolutely no-one believes that Grin about your inside knowledge I mean. You appear not to know what it is you don’t know. That speaks volumes.

You were going to give us a link weren’t you about William having nothing to do with Earthshot that you’ve mentioned a number of times now. I left a link for you.

julieca · 30/09/2021 23:47

Okay don't believe me. I went into work when they were talking in the media about how hard it was to distribute a mrna vaccine in Britain, and we were all ??? What they meant was it cost more. It is not hard.

julieca · 30/09/2021 23:49

It is like saying distributing fresh yoghurt or cream is hard. It really is not, it just costs more than distributing tins of baked beans.

StormzyinaTCup · 01/10/2021 00:13

I can't help thinking this is the sort of work that, in any other time, would have Harry's name written all over it. Boots on the ground, helping the vaccine programme in third world countries and working to increase vaccine take up (vaccine hesitancy is quite high). Not dissimilar to his mum's AIDS and land mines work. It appears the 'celebrity lifestyle' is now the preferred path. Shame really.

Yes would have far more respect if he flew over to these countries, put his fatigues on and got stuck in, instead of standing on a stage, appearing to revel in the adulation and flashing camera bulbs ( remember those Harry? Hmm)
smilesy · 01/10/2021 08:07

Just realised that this discussion is going on in two separate threads. As I said elsewhere @julieca the issue is nothing to do with cold chain. What Harry asked for was the waiving of IP’s. Asking for help with distributing vaccine as per Covax existing work would have been far more useful. But he didn’t do that. What he asked was impractical, particularly in the short term when vaccines are already available but not getting in to people’s arms. What’s the point in allowing other countries to manufacture vaccine when these things will take too much time to set up?
