Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/08/2021 18:42

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

@Roussette

Once they actually start doing something measurable (or even visual) about all of these causes that they are so passionate about other than adding their royal names to things, I will stop criticising them

They do. You just don't want to know about it. Here you go...

'The Sussexes pledged to fund four "Community Relief Centers" in regions frequently struck by climate disasters—and on Wednesday, World Central Kitchen announced that construction on the first center, built in Dominica, was complete'

And one in Haiti.. now ssupporting and feeding displaced people after the earthquake.

If posters just read the hate in the British press which shows us up to the whole world as bitter and pathetic... you won't see anything they do.

I'm glad they are using their voice.

Again they have "pledged to fund".

How are they funding? What are they actually doing?

Gilmorehill · 18/08/2021 10:45

Surely the central theme of the statement should refer to Harry’s service in Afghanistan. He must have opinion on the efforts and sacrifices he and his colleagues made. He and all his fellow servicemen definitely have the right to be speaking up.

Marmaladeagain · 18/08/2021 10:47

actually just glanced above at the statement and it reads like a very poorly drafted off the cuff post on MN forum that I might make. Reason being, I tend not to correct my mistakes as casual conversation is how I see it.

A pen should be taken to the whole thing as it reads so poorly. Avoid so many commas for instances by phrasing the sentence correctly in the first place. Using the word "scared" is something I'd suggest one of my children remove for being inappropriate - it is such a poor piece of writing.

SugarCaneHarvest · 18/08/2021 11:05

The 'people are being conditioned to accept it' part makes them sound like conspiracy theorists.

It does relate back to this paranoia of the media and their seeming desire to try and control the narrative at all times.

Roussette · 18/08/2021 11:06

Rousette, can I ask why you seem so utterly obsessed with Meghan and Harry and that they should be seen to be saintly and can do no wrong? You post on all threads relating to them (and slag off the Royal family on other threads. Do you know them personally?

@reprehensibleme Oh don't be so ridiculous. And I object to you singling me out. There's posters on here who I could say exactly the same about. Why are they so obsessed in their dislike of H&M?

I don't 'slag off' the RF on other threads. I post realistically about them as I find it. I used to be quite the Royalist you know... my opinion has slowly changed for lots of different reasons. To be honest, I'm disappointed in them.

MinesAMassiveSalad · 18/08/2021 11:07

The conditioning mention does indicate a belief in an overall nefarious intelligence behind things.

MinesAMassiveSalad · 18/08/2021 11:07

So yes conspiracy territory.

reprehensibleme · 18/08/2021 11:19

Singling you out by means of pointing out that you post again and again and again on these threads - far more than any other poster. Do you know the couple personally, or do you have an involvement in their charitable 'work'?

Again I will say to you reprehensible. Don't be ridiculous.

And again I will repeat to you, there are posters who are far more prolific than me on these threads posting of their dislike of M&H, not so easy to spot because of name changes.

I have been accused on MN (not just me, others too) of being Doria, a paid shill, working for Sunshine Sachs, a friend of theirs, a plant, a journalist... the lot.
I am an ordinary grey haired MNer sat in her kitchen and I abhor bullying. I think they have been bullied, hence my presence on M&H threads. Is that good enough for you, or would you like me to provide some references?

If you persist in casting aspersions on me and suggesting otherwise, I shall report you.

Roussette · 18/08/2021 11:26

To be fair, I only come on these for @Roussette’s inevitable involvement

Thanks everso. I'm touched you like me so much. Smile

reprehensibleme · 18/08/2021 11:26

Okeydoke Grin

reprehensibleme · 18/08/2021 11:27

There were no aspersions. There were a couple of questions.

Roussette · 18/08/2021 11:28

I answered.

You persisted and didnt accept my answers.

reprehensibleme · 18/08/2021 11:51

To be fair, your response to my question was

'Oh don't be so ridiculous.
To be honest, I'm disappointed in them.'

Which was not answering my questions at all. I didn't persist, I just asked if you have any involvement with the Sussexes or their charities/ foundations - still not sure - a simple yes or no would have answered the questions.

However, I appear to be danger of becoming a prolific poster on this thread so, none the wiser, will shuffle off to more interesting pursuits.

PicsInRed · 18/08/2021 11:54

To be fair, I only come on these for@Roussette’s inevitable involvement.

That's normal and not concerning at all. HmmConfused

Roussette · 18/08/2021 11:58

I answered you.

The 'don't be so ridiculous' would lead you to believe I am not Meghan's bestie. You persisted.
And then I listed what I'd been accused of in the past, and said I was just an ordinary grey haired MNer who doesn't like bullying. There was your answer but no...
Still not enough for you.

And now again... still persisting.

OK, I will spell it out.

NO .

Is that ok now?

I'm finding this obsession with me a tad weird and I'm really not sure why I have to justify to you wht threads I post on. In case you missed the first NO, here is another one..
NO.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 18/08/2021 12:22

Hi! Don’t worry. I also enjoy your input too @PicsInRed
debbrianna · 18/08/2021 12:50

These threads always blow my mind how people think.

debbrianna · 18/08/2021 12:52

@GLTM

I think this is a very good point and I'm glad they said this:

'When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not'

I also like the way they acknowledge the feelings of powerless. I definitely feel that. And encourage supporting organisations that can help. I've done this prior to their statement, but spoke to people who felt powerless and didn't know what to do.

So I think their statement is valuable and helpful.

All the other threads on Afghanistan on mn echoed this. Why is their statement different?
sashagabadon · 18/08/2021 12:54

it's a pointless statement, saying nothing at all, by silly people

RichTeaTime · 18/08/2021 13:19

The problem is Covid imv. We are not getting normal interesting people in the news - celebs, MPs once in a blue moon, musicians, actors, fashion designers, all the stuff of day to day chat and gossip - gone.
So we are left with the H&M, HM, Boris, ermmm - see what I mean - that's about it., oh, Piers Morgan.

MintyCedric · 18/08/2021 13:48
@MintyCedric do your research. You know about all the evil they are doing so use that same energy to find out what good they are doing. Though I am sure in your eyes everything they do and say are bad, cringed, wicked, etc. BUT I can tell you this, they have done a damn sight more than the rest of the Royal Family. What has the British Royal family done to highlight the needs of Haitians? Do you care about Haiti? Then ask those who feed off your tax payer pounds what are they doing and stop worry about Harry and Meghan.

I saw a funny picture that depicted the British hatred of Meghan. It was a collage of middle aged to old white men and women. That pretty much sums up how those outside of Britain view this issue.
@Why2why

It was a genuine question so not sure there was any need for that level of vitriol or rudeness.

I've spent the last 18 months caring for a dying parent so time to 'do my research' has been limited.

milveycrohn · 18/08/2021 14:19

As Harry served in Afganistan, I think it would have been especially noted if he (they) had not made any statement at all.
However, I do think their statement rather 'wordy' and pretentious.
No one is going to criticise Biden, for the simple reason he is not Trump, who everyone seems to hate. (As I am not American I do not feel confident to comment on Trump versus Biden).

SueSaid · 18/08/2021 14:27

'As Harry served in Afganistan, I think it would have been especially noted if he (they) had not made any statement at all'

He had made a statement

Not as flowery granted, not quite as dramatic but they really didn't need to do 'and another thing' statement did they?
