Harry and Meghan statement on Afghanistan

“The world is exceptionally fragile right now.
As we all feel the many layers of pain due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are left speechless.
As we all watch the growing humanitarian disaster in Haiti, snd the threat of it worsening after last weekend’s earthquake, we are left heartbroken.
And as we all witness the continuing global health crisis, exacerbated by the new variants and constant misinformation, we are left scared.
When any person or community suffers, a piece of each of us does so with them, whether we realise it or not. And though we are not meant to live in a state of suffering, we are as a people, being conditioned to accept it. It’s easy to find ourselves feeling powerless, but we can put our values into action - together.
To start, we encourage you to join us in supporting a number of organisations doing critical work. We also urge those in positions of global influence to rapidly advance the humanitarian dialogues that are expected to take place this fall at multilateral gatherings such as the U.N. General Assembly and the Leader’s Summit.
As an international community, it is the decisions we make now - to alleviate suffering among those we know and those we may never meet - that will prove our humanity.”

H&M are being criticised for making this about them and for not calling out Biden, notably the FLOTUS is report as being a personal friend of H.

What do mumsnetters think?

@WinnieTheW0rm

I also liked his possible documentary about the behind the scenes of the Invictus games.

But it will be interesting to see what they do with it.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 17/08/2021 23:07

They are ridiculous and need to shut up and go away

OverByYer · 17/08/2021 23:13

If Harry had already made a statement, why the need for another one?
Harry having served in Afghanistan is able to offer a unique insight.
Why the need for a second one that’s just blurb?

Divebar2021 · 17/08/2021 23:14

Yes. Have the privacy you were so desperate for.

@FrippEnos why is the British world waiting to hear anything from them? I thought you hated them and want them to keep quiet. I thought the a British world thought they are irrelevant.

The British world is not their target audience. They left the British world behind but the British world continue to hang in their every word even asking for more.

The British world does not determine things in a world stage. Meghan and Harry’s podcast top the charts in countries across the globe, book made Times bestseller, Emmy nominated, award for elephant documentary, etc, etc. All determined by folk outside of the British world. In other words, to them, the British world and its hatred are irrelevant to their success.

FrippEnos · 17/08/2021 23:48

@Why2why

You really do have a bee in your bonnet about the "British world".

It is quite amusing that you lump us all together.

I, like most of the people I know, find them as relevant as the rest of the celebs that like to tell others what to do whilst doing very little themselves.

Once they actually start doing something measurable (or even visual) about all of these causes that they are so passionate about other than adding their royal names to things, I will stop criticising them.

Plumtree391 · 17/08/2021 23:51

I like them. At least they care enough to make such a statement and if it encourages people to get involved in something that will help, all good.

LivingOnAnIsland · 17/08/2021 23:51

Suffolk?

BoarOnTheFloor · 17/08/2021 23:51

what was said could have been of more interest if it was something other than what was actually said.

@Why2why
What award did the elephant documentary win?

Marmaladeagain · 17/08/2021 23:59

Why2why laughing at hypocrites is what ‘us Brits’ are doing. Brits 🧐 hmmm sounds peculiarly so non- British.

HeddaGarbled · 18/08/2021 00:06

Harry having served in Afghanistan is able to offer a unique insight

Unique is a bit of a stretch.

Why2why · 18/08/2021 00:09

You question whether I’m British because I say Brits? Why do some Brits spend so much time agonising about who is and isn’t British and therefore belongs or not belong here?

Laughing at hypocrites or laughing at self? The biggest hypocrites head the great British isle. Best to focus on the hypocrites here than the alleged ones who live in the US. There are enough hypocrites here. Example those proclaiming to be against racism but does everything to ensure they are not subject to equality laws. There are many, many more examples. Laugh at the hypocrites here. No need to travel across the world looking for hypocrites.

Why2why · 18/08/2021 00:11

@crocidura the British media did not report it? What a surprise.

Moonface123 · 18/08/2021 00:41

Just when you think things can't get any worse .

SwimmingUnderwater · 18/08/2021 06:32

The ‘British world’ as you put it, gave them their titles, which they use at every opportunity to gain attention for themselves. Despite despising the country and the institution which has given Harry everything he has. As for Meghan, who would care a jot what she has to say without her marriage to Harry? She wouldn’t be living in a millionaires mansion, without any proper job herself otherwise.

SwimmingUnderwater · 18/08/2021 06:33

The above was in response to @Why2why

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/08/2021 06:44

Is the feeling from both those, who approve and those, who disapprove of H&M that they are more celebrity these days than royal?

OP posts:
OutwiththeOutCrowd · 18/08/2021 06:48

Yesterday, Sussex. Today, Suffolk. Tomorrow, England in its entirety?

Maybe not quite a match for the Taliban, but still a swift and blatant takeover.

Yes of course. They aspire to be celebrities with the lifestyle that goes with it. They don’t have anything to offer though in return. He can’t keep on bleating about his nasty family , and she has nothing of interest to say about anything.
Roussette · 18/08/2021 06:57

They do. You just don't want to know about it. Here you go...

'The Sussexes pledged to fund four "Community Relief Centers" in regions frequently struck by climate disasters—and on Wednesday, World Central Kitchen announced that construction on the first center, built in Dominica, was complete'

And one in Haiti.. now ssupporting and feeding displaced people after the earthquake.

If posters just read the hate in the British press which shows us up to the whole world as bitter and pathetic... you won't see anything they do.

I'm glad they are using their voice.

I don't care what they are because I don't like to pigeonhole people but if they bring awareness to say World Central Kitchen or AfghanAid, that's fine by me.

How can they agree to fund these things? Are they using their own money? No they aren’t. What are they actually giving up themselves to help others? They aren’t even giving their time barring the odd video call. Unless you count the occasional photo opportunity where they fly in for ten minutes to hand out packages someone else has paid for.
WinnieTheW0rm · 18/08/2021 07:14

They aren't funding them I'm the normal sense of actually paying fir things.

They are collaborating with their organisations who are actually funding, project managing, building and running them.

It is far from clear what they have actually done other than make press releases. Though that might become clearer over time
