I like the idea and I like the video. (Not that keen on the big desk) And I though MM looked...alive!

Not sure who the other woman was. But there was good chemistry.

Meghan’s fans donated over 50k for disadvantaged girls in India for her birthday. So somewhere out there.. she is not despised and inspires others . That’s a great thing surely

Greenlittle · 05/08/2021 18:10

Tuscancat, agree that Melissa M is really good!

@Roussette

A better idea would be 40 friends donating $40k = $1.6m

And even if she and the 40 had done that, there would be threads on here saying...
how dare she only give $40K
and worse

Agree
Roussette · 05/08/2021 18:11

I think this is a lovely and well intended initiative. Building womens networks is important, lots of incremental gains can add up to a big difference, so go Meghan!

Yes. So agree.

Being awake to social injustice especially racism is surely a good thing no?

You would think so! Not sure that I'd be bragging that being a person against injustice and racism is an awful way to live your life.
How embarrassing !
@Skiptheheartsandflowers As one who likes to research and ascertain credibility, I might suggest you ponder more on the meaning of ‘caritas’, Latin for ‘truth’. Truth be told, I had dealings with this individual long before she met ‘Hapless Harry’ and the things stated about her in my pp (now taken down by the kind MN thought police) are all true. Might I direct you towards a blog called ‘Harry Markle’, which you might find enlightening...
You want traffic on your blog. Ha ha. Not falling for it.

Greenlittle · 05/08/2021 18:14

I think it is a bit lacking imagination to say that rich people should only donate money.

Actually sharing their time and network is far more valuable. And it is something that many of us can do.

I wonder if this is for mid career women, starters or everything in between?

OP posts:
Zuluqueen · 05/08/2021 18:17

@LolaSmiles

I'm skeptical of rich, privileged people thinking a motivational pep talk is the answer to women's systemic oppression.
They are not all rich privileged women volunteering for this. Some people who have signed up from what I have seen on Twitter are ordinary women from minority backgrounds, from other backgrounds who have signed up to mentor somebody who may not otherwise think they have a chance at a career in law. Of course it it doesn’t mean they will get the job but representation matters.
Knittingupastorm · 05/08/2021 18:21

Being pedantic here but it's so obviously rehearsed

But no one would expect anything like this to not be rehearsed, would they?

In terms of the initiative, it sounds interesting and depending on the people could be very useful as I assume appropriate effort would be put in to match people, eg Stacey Abrams is fab but would of course (like anyone) be more able to be helpful to some people than others.

Roussette · 05/08/2021 18:21

Here is the tweet and video from the wonderful Stacey Abrams about this initiative, what a great person to support this

Well it’s a step up from the ‘empowering’ messages she wrote on bananas for sex workers I suppose, but it’s clear why she never made it as a A/B list actress.

Caritas · 05/08/2021 18:22

@MoChridhe I get it (ha ha) you’re someone who compliantly reads and believes everything they see in the mainstream media, about someone they’ve never met (because of course, the media doesn’t lie Grin) and can’t accept a contrasting perspective..yes you really have me worked out Wink

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 05/08/2021 18:27

I did say any attention to the issue was good. I'm still doubtful about the approach, though, because as I said earlier, it individualises the problem. Women need to know the right person, present themselves a little better, believe in themselves that little bit harder, and they'll succeed. Very much the neoliberal trap, as some people speak of it. It's then down to the individual to work hard enough to fix the problem. Whereas, if your industry has been brought to a halt and employers just aren't hiring, it's a different story. A structural thing that better interview technique won't overcome. I'd like to see that kind of light shone on it.

Roussette · 05/08/2021 18:29

Overdon Do you ever look forward or do you just bring up something from years ago to knock someone? (By the way, the bananas all went down well.Grin)

She didn't make it as an actress lol. $50,000 per episode and she did over 100
Not too shabby!

spinningspaniels · 05/08/2021 18:29

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=woke

Woke to me means "The act of being very pretentious about how much you care about a social issue".

Roussette · 05/08/2021 18:33

Urban Dictionary 🤣😂🤣🤣

Personally I prefer Oxford English or Merriam Webster

Woke: aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)

@ApplyWithin

Made me cringe. How patronising. A phone call from some celeb in their mansion telling you to “go girl” and grab that minimum wage job while they go back to their yoga with Oprah and ponder how to spend their millions?

It’s the height of narcissism and total lack of self-awareness. Throwing some crumbs to the downtrodden to make yourself look woke, worthy and pious. They are all full of shit I’m afraid. Multi-millionaires who seek every day to become richer and richer than you.

This. She looked amazing and it was nice to have a nose at the decor but the idea of a 40 minute chat from a sleb to a pleb will help get women into work is nonsense. How will it be measured? It won’t be. Just gives her mates the chance to pose on Instagram in her special t-shirt. Few weeks will all be forgotten about. How about her 40 mates all donate 40 grand to charidee?

Couldn't agree with this more.

@Arrowheart

Funny that Harry was outside juggling balls. Maybe he found his tucked in her handbag.
Brilliant
Roussette · 05/08/2021 18:50

There are some powerful names within the 40, I don't doubt they give to charity anyway.

Stacey Abrams, Hillary Clinton, Amanda Gorman (poet laureate), Princess Eugenie, Stella McCartney, Adele...
If they were able to mentor, help, advise... I think it's very worthwhile.

But of course, it being Meghan, it will be knocked by some. Luckily it's being very well received by far more.

Overdon · 05/08/2021 18:51

@Roussette , it was only 2 years ago and I really don’t care how well the bananas ‘went down’ I found it cringe.
However, the charity involved sensibly never included the offending bananas in the sex workers food parcels and used them for baking a cake instead. 😀

Meghan was a basic cable actress, not A/ B list; and it shows.

Roussette · 05/08/2021 18:56

Meghan reaped the financial benefits of her acting so she can't have been all bad at it can she?
And what does it matter if she was not A/B. I doubt she's fretting about it lol.

Viviennemary · 05/08/2021 19:00

I couldnt think of anything worse than being mentored by a celeb. Its a bonkers idea. Not empowering at all.

Roussette · 05/08/2021 19:00

They aren't all celebrities.

SnottyLottie · 05/08/2021 19:01

I would liked it to have been explained how they would use these 40 minutes to help, and maybe it will be documented at a later date.

I imagine it could be things like helping source clothes for someone who needs a new interview wardrobe (like Smart Clothes) or helping to find a free interview or CV writing coach.

I think it has the potential to be a good campaign but I guess we will have to wait for the outcome and hope they document the success stories in detail.

On a whole I think she came across really well. Could have done without Harry arsing around in the background though 🙄 You’re either in the video or you’re not. Whilst I imagine it was pre agreed beforehand I feel like it takes away from her and her message because Harry feels the needs to be seen/included/the comic relief (Melissa was doing that part perfectly well on her own l, thank you very much)
