I really liked Diana and I hope the statue will do her justice. I wonder if it will be televised live. I expect so.

@Skiptheheartsandflowers many statues are in bronze. My DH used to cast them once upon a time 😀

smilesy · 01/07/2021 17:14

@SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere and Churchill. He looks good as a statue. Or a bust 🤣

SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere · 01/07/2021 17:18

Absolutely smilesy. Good call.

I dread to think how someone would represent me. I’d probably look like the love child of Bungle and the little old lady from Chorlton and the wheelies.

Cool! I did know statues can be bronze, but I thought then they'd look, er, bronze coloured? Told you I wasn't well informed Grin

Maireas · 01/07/2021 17:24

GrinGrinGrinGrin !! Oh, goodness, Sheldon, you have a good turn of phrase!
It's a poor representation and it's a shame. It'll be there for years!

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 01/07/2021 17:35

I wonder why this bronze statue of Diana was rejected.

It was created by Lesley Pover, a sculptress who seems to have had a genuine interest in understanding and doing justice to Diana.

There's a lot more love in this piece, I sense.

@Skiptheheartsandflowers. DH says that it has been coloured to make it look old. It would eventually go a greenish colour because of the copper in it, but that would take a while 😀

SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere · 01/07/2021 17:42

But it doesn’t look old. It looks like it has been painted with one of those gunmetal grey pots from an airfix battleship.

I daresay my eyes are broken.

smilesy · 01/07/2021 17:53

To be fair, I’ve only seen a small photo of it on my phone as I’ve been at work. It could be pink for all I know😂. But it has been painted. And it will be bronze underneath.

SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere · 01/07/2021 17:55

I wonder if it would have been better shiny? 🤔

Maireas · 01/07/2021 17:56

Maybe it's to unite William and Harry! They can both agree it's ghastly!

smilesy · 01/07/2021 18:02

I don’t mind it. You can tell who it is. I just think she looks stern, which doesn’t seem to me to be an appropriate expression for Diana 🤷‍♀️

SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere · 01/07/2021 18:03

maireas

Agree? They might initially.

Then the recollection would vary… 😏

@SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere 😂😂
How are your old folks doing by the way ?

GlencoraP · 01/07/2021 18:20

I much prefer the one by Leslie Pover, the one unveiled today has the jaw line wrong, quite apart from the dreadful clothes and air hostess shoes . But as long as her family like it that’s all that matters in reality, and clearly they do see something in it.

SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere · 01/07/2021 18:20

Grand thank you smilesy my dear. Smile

Whisper it - but we’ve been out of the house for a walk…..

A huge relief. I thought I’d glued them to their recliners in a moment of madness Grin

ShamedBySiri · 01/07/2021 18:22

The bronze (Lesley Pover) has a warmth about it and also more depth created with shadows and where it catches the light.
The gun metal grey is awful, very cold, dull and dare I say very dead looking. It also looks as if it has rain streaks, which no doubt it will have very soon anyway.
The children look like extras from Oliver, the jackets for the boys, bare feet for for the girl and the hidden child.

I think it looks as if there is a rose arch behind and that will be lovely when it is in full flower but today it looks dark and doesn't help with the gloom of the grey statue.

Not a fan. Sad

smilesy · 01/07/2021 18:24

Glad to hear it Sheldon x

Good news! xx
fucketyfuckwit · 01/07/2021 18:28

I feel sad that the children aren't William and Harry ☹️

SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere · 01/07/2021 18:31

The auld feller went Chorlton.
So not quite a walk for him.

All was good. ☺️ xxx

Looking at the news. Golden retriever therapy 😍

Sold!

Just not on the statue!

eddiemairswife · 01/07/2021 18:51

If it has been painted, why on earth grey? The 'boys' are no longer boys; they are men in their late thirties.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/07/2021 19:00

The sculptor has created some beautiful, thoughtful pieces in the past

Yes he has, which is why I'm surprised at this one

And thanks to whoever said it looked a bit "Soviet" - that's just the word I was looking for!!

SheldonesqueDoesNotBelongHere · 01/07/2021 19:01

The super pack of golden retrievers.

I’m awfully tempted to be Somerset bound.Grin

I’m not sure that the statue is painted. They went a bit closer on the news. You can see the blues/greens starting.

Possibly just weathered a bit? I’m no expert.

We just have wrought iron in our garden.

Hms Airfix will be able to be grey for some time yet.
