I really liked Diana and I hope the statue will do her justice. I wonder if it will be televised live. I expect so.

Open to the public from Friday in line with normal visiting times

Serenster · 01/07/2021 15:22

I think it was always going to be an incredibly difficult commission. I actually wonder if marble might have been a better medium that bronze, given it lends itself to softer curves.

Anyway, the composition is lovely, and I like the triangular lines it creates. Strangely, it’s the belt I don’t like - I think it’s jarringly too much of a feature! The main thing though is that her sons and siblings are happy with it.

GlencoraP · 01/07/2021 15:22

I think it’s ghastly , was hoping it was going to be like those people you can sit next to in a bench or hold the hand of. It doesn’t look like her at all and who are the random children and what’s with the belt .

Still as long as they are happy with it, they were never going to find something that everyone liked

Viviennemary · 01/07/2021 15:26

I was trying to be positive. Looked again. The clothes are nothing like she wore. And her face is nowhere near. It's awful.

I don’t like the face. They could’ve done a much better representation.

It really is isn't it.

The face is wrong.
She looks very masculine.
The belt looks like she's just won a heavy weight title.
The clothes are peculiar.
Plus the random children are odd.

Truthfully if I didn't know it was meant to be Diana I wouldn't be able to guess it was a statue of her. I hope William and Harry and her family are not as underwhelmed by it but it certainly doesn't portray Diana as people remember her.

dementedma · 01/07/2021 15:30

I really wanted to like it but......its awful.

LizzieSiddal · 01/07/2021 15:31

The concept is lovely but the state is dreadful. The face of Diana and the “girl” are so hard, the girls looks like an adult! And the cloth she’s wearing are just horrible. She was a style icon for goodness sake.

LizzieSiddal · 01/07/2021 15:32

*clothes

RickiTarr · 01/07/2021 15:32

Oh no. It doesn’t look like her at all and it’s not very easy on the eye.

LizzieSiddal · 01/07/2021 15:32

*statue, excuse typos!

DeRigueurMortis · 01/07/2021 15:33

Maybe it looks better in real life? Confused

BalloonSlayer · 01/07/2021 15:34

I think it's lovely.

Harry looks exactly like Prince Charles in that photo.

quizqueen · 01/07/2021 15:36

Not a great likeness of her, in my opinion. Disappointing, with random children next to her.

TastyTicklemore · 01/07/2021 15:43

I am not massively keen, either.

I think the proportions are slightly off. The children look older but only come up to her waist - making her look like a giant.

I am not sure I would honestly know it was Diana if I wasn't told.

A shame, but then what does my opinion really matter? Smile

EssentialHummus · 01/07/2021 15:44

It looks a bit Soviet imo. Not sure. Do the random children represent something (other than random children)?

ajandjjmum · 01/07/2021 15:47

Presumably her love of children? I don't love it - concerned it doesn't do her justice. But could it ever?

I hope in time it will serve as a reminder of a fantastic person - with flaws - who made a huge impact in her short life. So a mental representation rather than physical, if that makes sense.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 01/07/2021 15:51

I guess the children represent her interest in, well, children. Turns out that's what William and Harry must have been referring to when they mentioned it 'representing her interests'.

It does show how difficult it is to represent someone like Diana, whose image is so familiar to many of us, in statue form. I like the sculptor's Josephine Baker a lot, but I don't have as clear an image of her in my head. The clothes also don't seem to resemble anything specific Diana actually wore. It's a little as if he googled '80s fashion' and decided a wide belt was the way to go.

Harry looks exactly like Prince Charles in that photo.
Agree 100% with this.

adrianmolesmole · 01/07/2021 15:51

Who are the kids?!

I don't like it..

CassandraCross · 01/07/2021 15:55

I don't know if it is what the statue is made of that is the problem but it looks very harsh and dull, Diana's face looks masculine and of all the outfits Diana wore they chose that ensemble of clothes???

It may look better in real life but I'm somewhat underwhelmed if the photos are anything to go by.

The garden looks fabulous but everything else done in memory of her seems to have failed spectacularly.

Roussette · 01/07/2021 15:55

I think it's OK, the only thing I'd like changed is her hair. It just looks a bit uninspiring.

I've just watched the footage of the event. There was a lot of warmth there. It looked a very friendly warm chat amongst them all.

Diana's sisters have aged, but I know I have a lot too!

MariposaLilly · 01/07/2021 15:55

The statue is awful! She looks too masculine. No figure/waistline, horrible belt/clothes. The female child looks like an small adult. One child hidden. It looks as if Diana is abducting some random children. No warmth. Depressing. She would hate it.

This monstrosity needs to be pushed into the shrubbery and hidden. A more appealing one, which captures her likeness and warmth needs to be made.

Roussette · 01/07/2021 15:56

The gardens are just beautiful

TokyoSushi · 01/07/2021 15:57

I really wanted to like it, but it's a no from me. Who are the children? And the belt... What a shame, it could have been really lovely.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 01/07/2021 15:58

I’d never have guessed that was meant to be Diana. A beautiful woman, and that statue isn’t. I thought it was William and Harry as children, but on closer inspection it isn’t...who are they?

I was hoping for so much more.
