The royal family

I’m in awe of the Queen

I’m no royalist, I dislike the fawning, particularly towards younger members of the family. Somehow I find myself watching Trooping the Colour and I can’t help but be impressed by the Queen.

She’s 95, very recently widowed following 70 odd years of marriage. She’s just got back from Cornwall and is again on active duty, enjoying this event. I know she’s lived an incredibly pampered life with the best health care, etc. I’m just amazed by her sense of duty and her strength.

Yes. She didn't go back to Cornwall last night. She's taking tea with POTUS and Jill Biden later today!

And would you believe it, they've just shown the Trump clip!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 13/06/2021 09:27

Well she's a game old bird for sure, but the sycophancy on this thread is pretty nauseating. Maybe its because I'm Irish, but fucking hell!

the80sweregreat · 13/06/2021 09:39

My dad was walking around without a Zimmer frame up to the age of 96!
Not all older people end up with a stick. She obviously has good genes and stayed fit and well. She is amazing, but I think there may a big sea change when Charles takes over. He isn't as well liked.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 13/06/2021 10:14

I’m not quite sure how you being Irish gives you cause to call some sycophants and nauseating for being complimentary about the Queen.

Each to their own.

Mummy www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/jun/02/buckingham-palace-banned-ethnic-minorities-from-office-roles-papers-reveal

More than 50,000 people have called for a parliamentary investigation into an “unfathomable” mechanism that allows the Queen to vet draft laws before they are approved by the UK’s elected representatives.

They have signed a petition supporting an urgent investigation by a House of Commons committee as they are concerned that the “royal family has a worrying and undemocratic ability to influence the government behind closed doors”.

This is really shocking!

I believe people find it easier to love others who don't rock the boat and do what they are meant to do. Being challenged is uncomfortable.

It is a blessing to be in good health at her age and fulfill the social engagements she does. As another poster so bluntly put it though I'm not so sure about being in awe of good health, longevity, and maintaining the status quo.

Roussette · 13/06/2021 10:29

Which members of the RF weren't in Cornwall over this last day or two?!

Charles and Camilla were there but there was so little on them. which was surprising. I know the Press report what the press wants to report but I would've thought there would be more emphasis on the two of them.

Charles hosted a G7 summit on climate change but there just seemed little reporting on it.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place Grin

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 13/06/2021 10:36

Charles made a speech, I thought, about sustainable investment? I read that somewhere but can't remember where. You're right though that he wasn't very visible.
I can see why there's lots of focus on the Queen at the moment after Philip's death.

Roussette · 13/06/2021 10:39

I saw a bit of Charles and one thing I will say about him... that man is a natty dresser!

He wears the most impeccable tailored suits with top pocket hankies etc.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 13/06/2021 10:52

Isn’t he though? It makes me feel a bit nostalgic.

My granda was a bit dapper. In latter years he couldn’t manage buttons quite so well and wore his wee suit jacket with a turtle neck. And the bunnet.

And he still looked smart as a carrot. My other granda was the same. Although he was okay with short buttons. And had enough hair for brylcream.

Marvellous men the pair of them.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 13/06/2021 10:52

Shirt buttons. Sorry

Roussette · 13/06/2021 11:02

Awww.... some people can just wear clothes well. And some just can't. Unfortunately I put my DH into the latter category 🤣. But he thinks he does, so that's OK Grin

PrimulaPrimrose · 13/06/2021 11:04

I think the Irish president looks pretty great too!😂

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 13/06/2021 11:07

I’m one of those. Five hours getting ready. And then get asked ‘are you not doing your hair/make up/getting dressed? Grin

Managed to look vaguely good in uniform but someone else did my hair for my pass out parade just in case!! Grin

Roussette · 13/06/2021 11:08

Yes, he's very smart too! As is Macron and of course Joe Biden who wears a suit well

you can tell where this is going cough - Johnson - cough

@lboogy

What's so great about her? She's the head of brutal a colonial empire. Nothing admirable about that IMO
Do we still have an Empire? Don’t think so.
prettylittlestar · 13/06/2021 11:15

I have always admired the Queen. It must have been a very stressful start, on how she became Queen. loosing her father and suddenly have to take over his role. And I think that positive attitude reflects in the others too.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 13/06/2021 11:16

I have hair like Boj.

Much longer. But the same ‘style’ rousette

More madam Mim.

the80sweregreat · 13/06/2021 11:25

I look like a sack of spuds even in a 3 k dress.
Kate and co can carry it off as they have the figure for it.

Strip countries dry, and don't give anything back. Still remain presiding over them. Change the name Empire to Commonwealth. Take down a few statues. And Bob's you uncle, you just freed them from the Empire.
Roussette · 13/06/2021 11:35

But Sheldon* you don't rub it with a balloon before Prime Minsters Questions!
He ruffles it on purpose, he did it on camera at G7!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 13/06/2021 11:46

The static electricity from my legs rubbing together negates the need for a balloon 😳

Will look out for the ruffling - I missed that!

ssd · 13/06/2021 11:47

I dont think we'll see her likes again.

upinaballoon · 13/06/2021 17:03

I'm not sure what sycophancy means so when I've done my customary seven curtseys on Sunday to the picture of the Queen, in my hall, I'm going to reach for the dictionary to look it up. Monday tomorrow - only one curtsey. I ramp them up as the week goes by.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 13/06/2021 17:13

I shall nail my feet to the floor so I don’t stand for the National Anthem.

Which I was taught by the veterans in our town long before I served.

Who would have known I was getting force fed sycophancy along with my soup at the Legion.
