Harry and Megan have just announced their new baby's name.

What's everyone's thoughts?

OP posts:
Longtimeagonow46 · 06/06/2021 17:40

Pretty name

Andylion · 06/06/2021 17:40

I think it's a bit too personal. Like, here's a reminder that we're related to the Queen.

That's what I was trying to say.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 06/06/2021 17:40

Ah, can you hear that weird farting noise in the distance? Its the sound of all the people who have chosen to Hate Meghan as a lifestyle choice finally being able to let rip into their keyboards and let loose with the pointless vitriol. They've been on tenterhooks for weeks now.

Laiste · 06/06/2021 17:41

Spend so much energy distancing from the family and then use a family nick name?

And use a short version of the nick name?

Will they use a short version of the short version of the nick name and call her Lils? Grin

Stanleysaysyes · 06/06/2021 17:41

Glad mother and daughter are doing well.

I am a republican (except when there is a good wedding to watch! Wink) but even I think calling the baby Lilibet is rather presumptuous in current circumstances.

OrchestraOfWankery · 06/06/2021 17:41

@thecognoscenti

I think it's a bit too personal. Like, here's a reminder that we're related to the Queen. Don't forget that! Without that connection, they'd be a middling soap actress and an ex-squaddie. Lily is nice and they could just have gone with that, but no, got to crowbar the royal reference in there.
True enough.

I think it's a dick move to use the queen's personal nickname. Particularly as a pp linked an article stating that the name was dropped after Philip's death.

Themeparklover · 06/06/2021 17:42

I called it weeks ago, after harry was seen in that interview saying he liked the name lily, even though theirs is spelt lili , however I thought it might be lilibet doria diana

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 06/06/2021 17:42

Yesterday it was announced that the baby was due on Philips birthday yet she had already been born.

Oh yes! Round two of their weird timing of labour and birth announcements. How was this announced, actually? Meaning who did it come from - they don't have social media to put it on.

daisypond · 06/06/2021 17:42

They haven’t called her Lillibet, though. It’s Lilibet. Your thread title is wrong.

Genderwitched · 06/06/2021 17:42

Iv'e never commented on Harry and Meghan before, so not a hater at all. But I was shocked when I heard that they had named the baby Lilibet, the Queens very own nickname.

It just seems that they can't do anything right, don't they have anyone to advise them. It just doesn't seem right on any level.

Babies need to be people in their own right, not named for someone else, especially such a distinctive name. Second name fine, but not first name.

Also, it's just such a cheek after the hurt that they have caused the Queen. It just seems such a cynical move to keep them in the papers and generate headlines. They will have know the controversy that this name will cause, it's becoming obvious now what they are trying to achieve. This has made me really cross, I was on the fence until now but I just wish they would go away.

MaBroon21 · 06/06/2021 17:42

Lovely names but there is only one Lilibet and that’s the Queen.

It would have been more respectful to not have given the baby the name.

Youngatheart00 · 06/06/2021 17:42

I think it’s another sign of a very confused and desperate couple. The middle name of Diana is an obvious choice and I actually think it’s a lovely way for Harry to honour his mother. But to use the Queen’s childhood nickname when they have spent the last year or so slagging off the institution she is head of is just.....bizarre.

viques · 06/06/2021 17:42

@eurochick

Wasn't Lillibet Philip's pet name for the Queen. It feels... wrong.

Diana was inevitable.

It was her sisters name for her, she couldn’t manage Elizabeth.
Fleek · 06/06/2021 17:42

Really don't like it but I quite like Lily. Lilibet just sounds like Lilliput to me and it also sounds childish - I am not sure I'd want that to be my name when I was 40/50/60.

But it's not like it matters, lots will love it, many won't - it's their choice. I'm glad she's arrived safely.

lightand · 06/06/2021 17:43

As a name, fine.

As to what they are trying to do with it, awful and shameful.[the Lillibet part]

Bloodypunkrockers · 06/06/2021 17:43

@YellowMonday

I'm happy mum and bub are well.

However, the name? This is straight up gaslighting. Using the private family nickname to keep their "royal" relevance for merching is a disgrace. Why not Lilli or Elizabeth?

But?

How is this gaslighting?

Statement from their press secretary I believe
Parker231 · 06/06/2021 17:44

No one has any idea of the conversations which have taken place in the RF. I would imagine that Harry discussed the names with his grandmother when he was in England recently. I imagine she is very proud to have been honoured. For all you know the Queen has already seen the baby on a FaceTime call.

Fairyliz · 06/06/2021 17:44

I really like the name.
However I find it really weird to name your child after a member of a family who apparently ignored your cries for help when feeling suicidal whilst pregnant with said child.
Surely it would be a reminder of that terrible time every time you said your child’s name?

sluj · 06/06/2021 17:44

How do you pronounce Lilibet? Is it LiliBET or LiliBUT (like Lilliput?)
I'm just thinking if it derives from a child's mispronunciation of Elizabeth then it's more likely to be Lilibut ??

grapewine · 06/06/2021 17:44

Particularly as a pp linked an article stating that the name was dropped after Philip's death.

Yep, that makes it worse.

I almost think it reads like some weird PR stunt, but I'm going to hell for even thinking that.

Agree with you
HandfulofDust · 06/06/2021 17:45

Good god the number of people who think they have insight into the personal relationships of the royal family. Aren't there people in real life you can gossip and be nasty about?

CokeDrinker · 06/06/2021 17:45

I know of two other people in real life (and neither live in the UK) with the name Lillibet. It's an actual name. People just didn't know that, and assume it's a fake/pet name.

Nope. It is an actual real full name, and I know two people with the name to prove it.

viques · 06/06/2021 17:46

Sorry meant to say that I don’t think giving a tiny baby names with such history is doing her any favours. Give the child a name she can make her own, not names with a legacy that she has to drag behind her every day of her life.
