Harry and Megan have just announced their new baby's name.

What's everyone's thoughts?

OP posts:
Roussette · 06/06/2021 21:18

Now that's a very good point!

oneglassandpuzzled · 06/06/2021 21:18

Lady Colin Campbell!

😂

artquejtion · 06/06/2021 21:18

Lili Mountbatten-Windsor and Archie Mountbatten-Windsor sounds so much grander than plain old Lili Wales and Archie Wales.

SnottyLottie · 06/06/2021 21:19

I think the Cambridge kids are known as ‘George, Charlotte and Louis Cambridge’ at school. And William and Harry were known as William and Harry Wales.

Therefore Archie and Lili could be known as Archie and Lili Sussex in an official capacity?

SnottyLottie · 06/06/2021 21:20

*unofficial

MeridianB · 06/06/2021 21:20

@Genderwitched

Iv'e never commented on Harry and Meghan before, so not a hater at all. But I was shocked when I heard that they had named the baby Lilibet, the Queens very own nickname.

It just seems that they can't do anything right, don't they have anyone to advise them. It just doesn't seem right on any level.

Babies need to be people in their own right, not named for someone else, especially such a distinctive name. Second name fine, but not first name.

Also, it's just such a cheek after the hurt that they have caused the Queen. It just seems such a cynical move to keep them in the papers and generate headlines. They will have know the controversy that this name will cause, it's becoming obvious now what they are trying to achieve. This has made me really cross, I was on the fence until now but I just wish they would go away.

All so true. Why not just call her Elizabeth? It definitely appears loaded and cynical given their claims in recent weeks. The Queen deserves better. 😟
Roussette · 06/06/2021 21:20

OMG, there would be a thread filling even quicker than this one if they had called them Archie and Lili Sussex!

There would be an outcry like never before!

ArmoireArmy · 06/06/2021 21:21

Today 21:10 Roussette

Serenster I honestly thought (and do correct me if you know different) that 'Wales' was just a name used in an unofficial capacity in the Army for a name badge or whatever.

Do you mean that Archie and Lily should be 'Sussex'? If George and Charlotte use 'Cambridge'. I don't understand.

There would be an outcry of they did!”

George, Charlotte and Louis have royal titles so they use their parents dukedom as last names. M&H’s children actually have last names and no royal titles so there’s no need to use their parents dukedom as last names. Prince Harry has a royal title, he can be called Harry Sussex. Prince George has a royal title, so he can be called George Cambridge. For Archie Mountbatten-Windsor it would be useless to give him the last name of Sussex when he already has a last name. Do you get it?

nevertrustaherdofcows · 06/06/2021 21:22

She is so going to be called Bert at school

Serenster · 06/06/2021 21:22

Actually, @Rousette having just gone away and looked into it, it is, as ever, reassuringly murky. Grin

It took 57 years for a member of the family to actually be given the name Mountbatten-Windsor on their birth certificate after the Queen’s 1960 Letters Patent. That was Lady Louise Windsor, daughter of Sophie and Andrew. She is a Princess as a matter of law (and so wouldn’t normally use a surname) although her parents chose not to style her as such, but also chose, perplexingly, not to refer to her as Lady Louise Mountbatten Windsor. Her brother also has this surname. Then, Archie’s birth certificate does actually enter him with the surname Mountbatten Windsor (amusingly, since we know his parents wanted him to be a Prince, and so surnameless, and he may yet be one once Charles accedes). So yes, I concede he is perfectly appropriately called Archie Mountbatten Windsor!

If he was a Prince, he could be Archie Sussex if he wanted to have a surname. Or Wales, in line with his Dad (who could continue to use that surname - William remained Will Wales when working as an Air ambulance pilot even after his marriage and the grant of the Cambridge title). The conclusion - they can do what they please, it seems!

PerveenMistry · 06/06/2021 21:22

Pretty presumptuous to hijack the Queen's private pet name. I wonder if she was consulted.

They could have just gone with Lily. Especially after how they have "repaid" her majesty for her kindnesses to MM.

LadyEloise · 06/06/2021 21:23

Lilibet.
To honour the Queen.
After how they treated her when her husband was dying.
If I were the Queen I'd be fuming.
I'd love to hear Princess Annes's opinion.

PerveenMistry · 06/06/2021 21:23

@SallyLockheart

Trying too hard to continue links to RF

Exactly. I think the gravity of what he's done is sinking in with Harry.

CokeDrinker · 06/06/2021 21:24

@ArmoireArmy Are you serious? She has barely any connection to the family, and has got many things wrong in the past. And you offer up......Instagram?

FFS. You get your gossip (sorry, 'news) from Lady Colin Campbell and there is only ONE clip of her making that false claim, and it was proven false. It explain though why you are so illinformed if you believe someone like her who has zero connections to the RF.

Having Pancreatic cancer, or Prostate cancer - neither are things the RF would be ashamed of and we would have heard it from the RF. Fleet street would have published it. RF would have announced it on their website. You are making up false claims also falsely made by someone with no connection. You are embarrassing yourself at this point.

PerveenMistry · 06/06/2021 21:24

@sweetkitty

I feel sorry for Doria they could have honoured her somewhere too

Good point.

Doria Diana.

Roussette · 06/06/2021 21:25

ArmoireAmy

Do you get it?

Umm... no need to be snippy. You sound very cross.

I have been saying all along that the name Mounbatten Windsor is the name they should be using.

Do YOU get it?

ArmoireArmy · 06/06/2021 21:25

Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor would never be referred to as Louise Wessex because she already has an official surname. Princess Beatrice would be referred to as Beatrice York because of her father’s dukedom. @Roussette Only people with titles and no last name would be referred to using their parents dukedom

Changechangychange · 06/06/2021 21:26

@mathanxiety

I’m not saying Britain isn’t racist and doesn’t have a massive racist history btw. Just that I think a lot of US people lack the context to understand the dynamics here and their contributions to the conversation aren’t actually helpful as a result.

Are you talking about a special, British form of racism, @SimonedeBeauvoirscat?

You weren’t asking me, @mathanxiety, but yes I would say there is a specific British brand of racism that is based on a combination of colonialism and xenophobia, and US racism which is based on anti-Black white supremacy.

It is different. Not “less racist”, but definitely different. As is Australian, French and Canadian racism. Not recognising that actually allows British people to let themselves off - we know we don’t lynch people or have literal slaves, so we think we are doing fine.

Roussette · 06/06/2021 21:26

Serenster

You've nailed it there!

dorangme · 06/06/2021 21:26

All so true. Why not just call her Elizabeth?

Well apparently Lilibet Diana is copying Charlotte so I'm not sure how Elizabeth Diana would have gone down.

SnottyLottie · 06/06/2021 21:27

Does it not just go off your parent’s title? Does anyone know if Lady Louise is Louise Wessex or Louise Mountbatten?

Very interesting discussion!

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 06/06/2021 21:27

Yeah I think you're arguing the same thing here.
MaMelon · 06/06/2021 21:27

Good point. Doria Diana.

Or even Lilibet Doria Diana 🤷‍♀️ No nod to her Mum is strange, esp when she’s so close to her.

oneglassandpuzzled · 06/06/2021 21:28

Perhaps we can compromise me say that Lady Colin chooses the next monarch by placing a diamond-tipped fold pin into a name.

It would make better TV than the boring old legal system as laid down by Parliament, following centuries of civil wars and rebellions.

Serenster · 06/06/2021 21:28

@dorangme

Meh, throw a scone at the extended royal family and you’ll hit someone with Elizabeth amongst their names, I don’t see that as a big deal Grin
