Harry and Megan have just announced their new baby's name.

What's everyone's thoughts?

OP posts:

@Roussette

No. He has to change his name immediately to Smith. Harry Smith. To placate posters on here.
Henry Smith, his name isn't really Harry.
dorangme · 06/06/2021 20:13

@Getyourarseofffthequattro sadly I don't think so, not the first person to say so on this thread.

Leonardsgirl · 06/06/2021 20:13

Very pleased for them. A new baby is always a joy.

The name? - I don't know whether it's flattering or insulting.

Roussette · 06/06/2021 20:14

Henry Smith, his name isn't really Harry

Henry Smith has a nice ring to it, I will admit Grin

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 06/06/2021 20:16

Well there are two aspects of this, aren’t there.

The first is the name itself. I have relatives who have very specific nicknames by which they have been known by the entire family their whole life. Would I raise an eyebrow at a member of the younger generation giving one of those nicknames to their child as their formal name, particularly their first name? Yes definitely. These names arise through personal circumstances and generate anecdotes which are retold often and affectionately.

If the people choosing that name had asked and the person with that name genuinely and honestly didn’t mind then my raised eyebrow would lower itself again and I’d think it was nice.

But - factor 2 - if said couple had spent the last few months giving interviews to the international media about how awful their family was, my eyebrow would instead be residing somewhere above my hairline.

I mean, really? After all this hoohah? It is very very odd.

EdithWeston · 06/06/2021 20:16

@SenecaFallsRedux

To the people who keep saying that Philip was the last person to call the Queen "Lilibet", what do you think Sarah Chatto and David Snowden call her? Auntie Queen, perhaps?
Your Majesty and Ma'am, I expect, when ever anyone else is around. Maybe Aunt Elizabeth in private.

Only her cousins would call her Lilibet.

I assume they consulted the Queen before settling in the name (even though they are not high enough in the succession to be required to) because it's such an intimate choice. And if the Queen doesn't mind, then who is anyone else tomquibbke?

ArmoireArmy · 06/06/2021 20:16

@SenecaFallsRedux

Who calls her Lilibet? Her children call her Mummy, her grandchildren call her Granny, Great Grandchildren call her “Gan-Gan”, Sophie, Diana, Sarah, Timothy call her “Mama”. Everyone that isn't an immediate member of the royal family has to refer to the monarch by her official title. Nobody is able to call her Lilibet or Elizabeth anymore.

Marmaladeagain · 06/06/2021 20:17

@mathanxiety

(let's face it if that Lillie was alive then M wouldn't be talking to her anyhow...).

The relative in question was on her mother's side, so you are probably wrong.

Grin I'm wrong...

It was a poor joke, a bit like Meghan disowning her family for speaking out about her - then Harry doing the same to his family. Funny really.

Then making a public statement that you're naming your child after the head of the RF (that started the generational "pain"). A joke.

Peculiar or pathetic joke, but can't be taken seriously nonetheless - you can't get away with publicly running down the Queen (which is what the RF is, the others represent the Queen). Trying to pretend you respect the person by saying using the "family nickname" - as H&M say in the statement. The "family" they wanted to disown until it's backfired on them.

I don't think they care what the Queen things one way or another. When the Queen said they were unable to use "royal" in their merchandising etc they put a statement out to say that the word "royal" isn't owned by anyone. That's funny too. They are funny with their inability to read the room.

dorangme · 06/06/2021 20:17

and now she finds out that the ones trying to destroy her legacy have stolen the name that's unique to her,

What's Andrew got to do with the name?

Roussette · 06/06/2021 20:17

It is very very odd

Oh well.... it has spawned a thread that is rapidly filling. That's one plus point 😂

CokeDrinker · 06/06/2021 20:18

@yourestandingonmyneck Lilibet isn't a name in its own right

Actually, it is. In Australia, in the US and in Germany.

dorangme · 06/06/2021 20:19

It must be for the moeny they want to inherit in the will when the Queen dies........they are CF's....

Wait so you think the Queen is devastated & is planning to write them out of her will however now that they have hurt her even more by taking her name she will write them back in? Grin

Harry Smith was a notorious coloniser and subjugator of indigenous populations, so I think he would be well advised to stay away from all versions of Smith as a surname…! Grin

To be fair if they have another I quite like Tomquibbke. Has a certain ring to it. Tom for short Grin.

tiredanddangerous · 06/06/2021 20:20

I think the name is a bit of a strange thing to do really, not that they'll give a shit what we think!

I'd love to know what the Queen makes of it.

Roussette · 06/06/2021 20:20

littlepatitou

Reading your long embittered rant earlier on, I'm not the weird one I can assure you.

I'm finding this thread hilarious and sadly, very predictable. I'll keep commenting if its OK with you 😂

Oh give over! They are 'able' to call her whatever she wants to be called as.

SnottyLottie · 06/06/2021 20:21

This thread be like

H&M reveal baby is name Kale

“Kale, how dare they call their baby Kale. Prince Philip’s nickname for the Queen was Cabbage so it’s obviously a nod towards the Queen. Sickening that they’re sucking up to her after all that’s happened”

“Kale? As in the vegetable? It sounds made up”
“How dare you, it’s a real name! It’s a boys name from Hawaii and was a top 1000 name in the US in 2014!”

littlepattilou · 06/06/2021 20:21

@Frezia

This thread is comedy gold Grin
I agree. The Harry and Meghan obsessiveness is fucking hilarious.
SpiderinaWingMirror · 06/06/2021 20:22

Jeez. This thread should be kept. Mumsnet at its finest.
They can call their kid what they like.

Every time I see your user name on a thread, you are always in such a rage Confused

I would sincerely recommend boxing to get rid of that negative energy. It's not healthy.

Dunnesstores · 06/06/2021 20:22

Even if they asked the queens permission I would imagine she would feel no option but to agree.
Can you imagine the theme for the next interview if she refused, something like the queen refused to have her only mixed race great grand child be named after her. They wouldn't mention that it was her personal childhood nickname they were appropriating, they'd make it sound like it was the name Elizabeth.
