Harry and Megan have just announced their new baby's name.

What's everyone's thoughts?

It’s a lovely name!

PreparationPreparationPrep · 06/06/2021 18:26

@Mummy194

To get this straight.................the baby was born on Friday and the British media had absolutely no idea 🤣🤣
That is awesome 👏
BetterThanKleenex · 06/06/2021 18:27

They clearly haven't named their child just to get back at anyone Hmm

It's a lovely name and very fitting- there's no need to hate on a newborn baby.

dorangme · 06/06/2021 18:27

I love that if it wasn't for the name, some posters would apparently forget or not be aware that Meghan and Harry's daughter was part of the royal family

Quite

MaMelon · 06/06/2021 18:27

Did any media know?

smilesy · 06/06/2021 18:27

Lilibet is a real name indeed, but the fact remains that it was the Queen’s nickname from childhood. This naturally makes people question why it was chosen. I think Lili is a perfectly nice name in its own right. Why have Lilibet as the given name if you are not going to use it? I appreciate that Harry is not his real name, but I suspect he was given the name “Henry” on the off chance he might need to use it if he were ever king or regent or something. It’s more of a “royal” name. Glad the baby has arrived safely. I wonder if this means Harry will be here on July 1st 🤔

RustyBear · 06/06/2021 18:28

@eurochick

Wasn't Lillibet Philip's pet name for the Queen. It feels... wrong.

Diana was inevitable.

It didn't originate with Philip (though he may also have called her that) George V called her Lilibet, most famously in a quote about another member of the royal family who left it "I pray to God that my eldest son [Edward VIII] will never marry and have children, and that nothing will come between Bertie [George VI] and Lilibet and the throne."
PurpleRainDancer · 06/06/2021 18:28

Lovely name

CokeDrinker · 06/06/2021 18:28

@fashionablefennel

It might be rare, but research it, the name has been given to girls in the UK and the States (among other countries) for years.

It's hardy made up.

Exactly. The insular ignorance of UK posters is extraordinary.
Bellevu · 06/06/2021 18:30

@boomwhacker

It's not that far removed from Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. I think in normal circles it would be considered a bit strange to name your child in such a similar way as her cousin. I find the choice a bit crass to be honest.
@boomwhacker Considering Kate and William copied names from Earl Spencer (he had a Charlotte Diana first) I doubt she'd make a fuss.

Igloo71 · 06/06/2021 18:30

Is this stage one of them “collaborating” with the queen?

dorangme · 06/06/2021 18:30

Exactly. The insular ignorance of UK posters is extraordinary.

This is always evident on the baby name boards

CokeDrinker · 06/06/2021 18:30

When you consider it, all names are in some way 'made up' at some time.

EsmaCannonball · 06/06/2021 18:31

Lilibet instead of Elizabeth does feel like they are laying claim to something very personal which, given recent events, does seem rather shameless.

dorangme · 06/06/2021 18:32

To get this straight.................the baby was born on Friday and the British media had absolutely no idea

The DM story has amassed 7k comments many of which expressing how little they care 😆

AzureTwist · 06/06/2021 18:32

Wonder if there will be an English road family christening for this child, like her brother had?

BlueLobelia · 06/06/2021 18:32

No, not insular. Just looking at the familial and historical context.

Parker231 · 06/06/2021 18:32

@smilesy - DD has a family name but we use a nickname most of the time. It’s not unusual.

AzureTwist · 06/06/2021 18:33

Royal not road

Roussette · 06/06/2021 18:33

Great news. Love to hear about the safe arrival of a little baby. 7lb 11oz

Not keen on the name Lilibet but that's just me. However, their official statement shows she will be called 'Lili'.
Goes nice with Archie.

Squidthing · 06/06/2021 18:33

It's a lovely name, my daughter is named after my gran - I don't think it's such an odd choice.

SenecaFallsRedux · 06/06/2021 18:34

It didn't originate with Philip (though he may also have called her that) George V called her Lilibet,

The name originated with the Queen herself when as a baby princess, she attempted to pronounce her name,

I have read that Philip often called her "Lil."

Pyjamagame · 06/06/2021 18:34

Cringe

LoudestCat14 · 06/06/2021 18:34

Nicknames are deeply personal and generally unique to the person they're given to, so I find it a bit odd they would commandeer the Queen's childhood pet name as their daughter's given name. I know it sounds daft, but it's like they've appropriated something that is precious to the Queen. I'm presuming they asked her first though.
