2-5 June next year.

Starts with Trooping the Colour

Then beacons lit, A service of thanksgiving, big concert 'Platinum Party at the Palace' plus HMQ going to The Derby, plus Big Jubilee Lunch on Sunday (street parties?) and a pageant

(Even if you're not interested in this stuff, might be worth noting the extra holiday now).

Hooray. I hope I'm still around to enjoy it. My friend and I went to London for the Golden Jubilee and we were cold and wet in parts and couldn't see through the crowds, except for the fly-past over our heads, so next time it's "stay at home with the telly".

It's not an extra bank holiday though is it, just the late May one moved from the Monday to the Thursday.

Report
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 02/06/2021 18:40

Or is the Friday an extra one? I'm confused!

Looks like 2 June is the late May Bank Hol held over by a couple of days, and 3 June is an additional one

Good news. Time off work.
I bet they will roll out Paul McCartney and I Hope Grace Jones and her hula hoops come back too for the big concert! Madness would be good too.
Will start a thread.. only a year to go!

Excellent. I loved 2012 celebrations. Can we have the Olympics back as well?

Why do they keep doing this. Moving bank holidays? It's not ok.

The occasional extra Bank Holidays they bring is the only good thing about the RF.

We held a street party in 2012 and a ‘front garden’ street party for VE Day celebrations. Looking forward to another street party next year.

EdithWeston · 02/06/2021 19:36

I'm beginning to wonder about a street party - we didn't have one for gold or diamond, but perhaps this time round

(note to self, talk to neighbours)

Our neighbours don't like us much ( they don't like anyone!) so I doubt we will have any bunting out here. Have to make pimms and hope it's nice weather to sit outside or go up the pub!

What happens if the Queen passes away before February?

Report
newtb · 02/06/2021 20:04

Be replaced by a coronation party for HM King Charles III or whatever he calls himself.

My son said that today ' what if the Queen dies before next year ?' :(
(Knowing the Conservatives they will take the extra day away was my answer to that one. )
Get back to work , plebs!

@Oblomov21 why is it not ok?

@butterflycatcher we get a day off for her funeral

The Queen Mother lived to past 100 and she was a heavy drinker, married to a chain smoker. I would be surprised if the Queen doesn't live at least as long as her mother. However, my guess is that in the unlikely event she didn't we would instead have a national day of remembrance or something similar.

Presumably half term will be moved as well.

It’s moving from Monday to Thursday to facilitate an extra long weekend. Why is that ‘not ok’?

I don’t understand why they didn’t keep the bank holiday on the Monday and give us the Tuesday as well for a four day weekend. I don’t get the logic of moving it to Thursday and Friday.

We’ve taken advantage of the bonus day off to book a holiday abroad anyway but I have wondered what now happens if the Queen does die before then - sorry to be morbid, I just wondered if they’d take the day back. I know we would get a day off for her funeral and also for Charles’ coronation but they likely wouldn’t coincide with the same dates!

I just wondered if they’d take the day back.

They moved the same bank hol in 2020 for D-Day - which obviously fell flat because we were in lockdown, but it had been planned as a weekend of national celebrations - they didn't move it back, even though that decision had been made relatively late and most calendars/diaries had the wrong date printed in them.

Oh no, it's one of those weeks with most of half term in June anyway.
Report
EdithWeston · 03/06/2021 07:26

They need it to coincide with her official birthday, which Is always early June.

Also it's during half term (for much of the country, dates tend to be together in the summer because of exam timetable) so nearly everyone is off anyhow

So having a Monday/Tuesday in early June would mean holding over the late spring Bank Holiday to 6 June and adding 7 June even longer and in effect extending half term by two more days. I'm not so sure that would go down well.

If she does not make it to the Jubilee, then it'll all be cancelled.

I work for a store that only ever closes on Easter Sunday & Christmas Day so I doubt it will be any different for many staff. Also there are certain times you’re not allowed to book off.

2 June is significant as the date of her Coronation - understandably, she’s never wanted to celebrate the day of her accession as that’s the anniversary of her father’s death.

Sounds reasonable.
