Has anyone else seen this on Instagram? It's so lovely and natural. Their PR camp are hitting the right buttons! The Oprah interview now just seems so trashy in comparison!

OP posts:

but obviously missed by most that wish to see what they wish to see

Nothing like a bit of passive aggressive for a Sunday afternoon! 😂

I am reading news reports and commenting on them.

I think in these days and times it is appalling. It is a Boris Johnson vanity project that has been OKd by the royal family. When he announces it officially which is he doing shortly, there will be an outcry about it undoubtedly.

We slash funding to Unicef whilst commissioning a new royal yacht. Hmm What a sensible decision this is during a pandemic and when families are struggling. Not.

Roussette · 02/05/2021 14:11

You said “I do wonder what the Royal Family are on” which made it sound as though it was their idea

Ok. How about 'I do wonder what the Royal Family are on, OKing this'.

There you go.

Marmaladeagain · 02/05/2021 14:12

rous - again, I'm not speaking to you - the news is is misrepresented all over the news - so please be assured, I'm generally, never ever responding to you....

Roussette · 02/05/2021 14:13

There has apparently been a long campaign to have some sort of successor to Britannia to act as a flagship for our seafaring nation

By certain Conservatives undoubtedly. Britannia was decommissioned for a reason.
It's astronomical running costs.
We don't need 'a flagship for our seafaring nation' 🤣

Roussette · 02/05/2021 14:15

I spluttered over my cuppa there! Why do you have to write a post saying you are never responding to me... when in fact you are responding to me?! 😂🤣😂🤣

smilesy · 02/05/2021 14:19

They are okaying it because it is a tribute to Philip. By the Government. Who have presumably decided that it makes commercial sense. Why would the Queen not Okay a tribute to her husband? I don’t know if the government are right or not about the commercial value of this ship. I was just pointing out that it is not up to the Royal Family to decide to build it and that there is no reason for them not to okay it if the Government suggest it as a practical memorial.

Roussette · 02/05/2021 14:23

Totally disagree with you there.

It is not a one off £200Million as a tribute to Phillip. It is a yearly massive cost year in year out.

I think it is totally tone deaf in these days and times.

smilesy · 02/05/2021 14:35

I’m not getting in to an argument about the ethics of it. I relayed what was said in the article about what the proposed reason for building it is and that it will not be used in the same way as Britannia. What I am taking issue with is how this is in any way the responsibility of the Royal Family.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/05/2021 14:37

The slimming down is happening now - Charles is in discussions with William and there will be some changes announced soon

I don't pretend to have an inside track, but wonder if this is merely RF spin or if there's anything concrete to back it up? Either way I'll believe it when it happens and when there's proof rather than more PR

As for the yacht, I'd say words fail me except the idea's been floated (sorry!! Grin) before - the Mail published similar over the Diamond Jubilee and did a pretty clever job of making it sound like a fait accompli

However, given Charles's taste for borrowing the yachts of dubious friends he'd probably quite like a new toy to play with, so who knows ...

Marmaladeagain · 02/05/2021 14:38

no you miss the point, again - if I have something to say to you, it would never, ever be passive aggressive - it would be explicit enough and direct enough for you to be sure it was directed at you. HTH

No need to be offended at imagined passive aggressive comments directed your way. When it is directed your way there will be no doubt - as per my direct response to you, which you in your "missing the point style" found hilarious... yawn

Even Femi is saying it's not the Royal Family

PicsInRed · 02/05/2021 14:52
@Roussette, if you read beyond the headlines, it is not actually a Royal Yacht as such and is being paid for by the Government as a flagship vessel crewed by the Royal Navy. It will be used for promoting trade. It is being paid for in such a way that it will be able to be built in the UK, creating hundreds of jobs for Cammell Laird in Merseyside where the David Attenborough was built. It is being named Prince Philip as a memorial to the Duke.
"It will be used for promoting trade"

...that's what the old one was supposedly for too.

A new Britannia. Now. Ridiculous.

Marmaladeagain · 02/05/2021 15:06

Well, I say good on Femi for that - if only others would admit when they spectacularly get facts incorrect.

Roussette · 02/05/2021 15:08

marmalade I honestly have no idea what you're on about, so let's just leave it there.

On the subject of the Royal Yacht, it would not be named after Philip without the Royal Family saying yes to it.

Roussette · 02/05/2021 15:16

It appears to be an unpopular move.

I’m not saying they didn’t say yes to naming it Prince Philip, Roussette. Of course they would say yes. It would be a memorial. To a man who was a sailor and loved the sea. It would be appropriate to name it after him if it were built. I’m saying that they didn’t commission it which is what you implied. That’s down to the Government. I’ve said it several times now. Others seem to agree with me - see Twitter quote above. If what you are saying is that agreeing to name it Philip suggest implicit involvement with it being built, I think you are stretching a point. Anyway, it has t been built nor officially approved yet so I would let it go now. I am going to because I feel I am going round in circles here 🤣

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/05/2021 16:27

"It will be used for promoting trade" ... that's what the old one was supposedly for too

Yes it was, and according to the spinners it made us billions of pounds' worth - which seems to me like parking Andy the Trade Envoy in a corner so as not to offend anyone else, then wheeling him out at the end so they could claim "Andy inks the deal"

Britannia was also supposed to be used as a hospital ship in wartime, but in the Persian Gulf War was said to be "too far away" and with the Falklands it apparently "used the wrong fuel" (though I believe it picked a few folk up at Aden)

Good job they scrapped the thing really, before the excuses ran out as to why it couldn't be used ...

thereisonlyoneofme · 02/05/2021 16:36

Perhaps if Scotland get independence we should ask for Britannia back
Wink

smilesy · 02/05/2021 16:38

Going back to the subject of the video ( sort of), I think Princess Charlotte looks like the Queen in her birthday photo, although the press thinks she looks like William.

CallmeHendricks · 02/05/2021 19:03

I've always thought Charlotte looks like the Queen. From the moment we caught a glimpse of her face leaving hospital.

Andylion · 02/05/2021 19:27

I think I must be the only person who wasn’t a fan of the actress playing Diana ,

I thought she overdid the head tilt and her performance was more of a caricature.

didofido · 02/05/2021 20:08

Recently saw a picture I thought was Charlotte in old-fashioned clothes. It turned out the last Czar's youngest daughter. George V was so very like Czar Nicholas too.

derxa · 02/05/2021 20:23

I hated the performance.
CathyorClaire · 02/05/2021 20:41

There is continuity though as we always know who is (supposed to be) coming next.

Agreed. I should have made it clearer my point was meant to be about the longevity of any monarch which isn't a given.

It's worth noting that but for random birth order we might now be side-eyeing future King Andrew...

CathyorClaire · 02/05/2021 20:48

@TruelyWonder

I think the monarchy is gradually getting changed by Charles with Williams help now. It will be slimmed down and those left will be a bit more open and accessible. You can see them starting that now. All the tradition and public celebrations but the rest of the time more like the European royals.
Charles has apparently long been an advocate of 'slimming down'.

It plays well with the plebs but the key point is it won't affect his (or Wills') lifestyle one iota.

As for the mooted new royal yacht, I think the Emperor's New Clothes might be more apt as a moniker.

Britannia was beached for a reason.
