What a wonderful man Prince Philip was

He really was a remarkable man and what a sad day it's been watching the funeral. Hearing all the stories about his life, I have laughed, cried and been somewhere in between. I know it's not really a discussion topic but I wanted to show my respect to His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. GOD BLESS YOU SIR

I think it’s bad test to put up about a post about how wonderful he was, when all any of the royals do us scrounge off the taxpayer.

If the U.K. want a royal family let them earn their own money.

@thatwasme22

''Why would the OP post in sarcasm or have to be the queen or a family member to post what she feels is a fitting tribute to a man of 99 years of age''

maybe because the man is a stranger. Does she readong obituaries on the paper and sit crying over folk she never met? It is absurd people take celebrity deaths to heart.

But he wasn't a celebrity , he was part of a public institution and has been part of most of our lives for as long as we can remember. He seems to have done the best job he could under the circumstances he found himself in. Royalist or not I appreciate that and feel sad.

I feel a bit bad now. On the day of someone’s funeral it isn’t really the time to list faults. Sorry! I guess I was trying to say that we can respect those who feel moved today, but it doesn’t have to be about him being great, more that he is a figurehead, is known, is significant, and today is his funeral.

God there's some absolute nobheads on MN at the moment. Go give your heads a wobble.

RIP Phillip and thinking of the poor queen after losing her husband of 73 years.

@likeamillpond

I think it's in bad taste to come on here slagging the RF off. Especially today of all days. Save the twisted bitterness for another day and another thread.

It's a sad day for the royal Family and the Nation.
The service was absolutely beautiful.

It is not a 'sad day for the nation'. I dont think that those words are fair to use if and when we lose someone who has actually contributed something through endless hard work and dedication, never mind a man who had a pretty easy life and charity was the least he could give back. You don't get to dictate what is a loss for millions of people collectively, as you will probably be extremely disappointed by the majority who simply do not care beyond basic condolences.

I totally respect your comment. Maybe I wear rose tinted glasses, so I can apologise for that

No, it’s not a sad day for the nation, most people don’t really care.

peak2021 · 17/04/2021 19:13

I'd like to think of all those who have benefited from the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme over the years, in many countries.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 17/04/2021 19:13

Ugh. Misogynistic shite.

The song wasn’t my choice but all but one of the pubs on the street near me played either this (I’m not sure of the significance) or Prince Charming at 3pm. Social media indicates people loved it.

Some people don’t but I guess we could respect those that do care.
Unsure33 · 17/04/2021 19:14

Care of the environment has long been one of The Duke of Edinburgh's greatest interests. The Duke was the first President of the World Wildlife Fund-UK from its foundation in 1961 to 1982, was International President of WWF (now World Wide Fund for Nature) from 1981 to 1996, and is now President Emeritus. He has visited WWF projects in over 40 countries on five continents.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

You care enough to post on here . Obviously you must be bored .

Millions who have been through the Duke of Edinburgh award do care and many of them say it changed their lives .

Which is more than your post did .

God I’m no royalist but there’s some absolutely dreadful comments on here. Hope I never become this bitter.

PredominantlyPurple · 17/04/2021 19:18

I personally thought he was a vile man, his gaffes were very embarrassing for the Queen

Well they weren't really gaffes were they? That's just what the press called them to excuse blatant racism. I once worked as a barmaid and served a man two bottles of beer and asked him if he needed glasses.
When I looked up, I saw he was partially blind as he was wearing
very thick spectacles and carrying a cane. His mate laughed. Even he laughed. That was a gaffe.
I said something that could be misconstrued in a specific situation.

Totally different to something that is said on purpose by an intelligent man who knew exactly what he was saying and to whom.

Fountainsoftea · 17/04/2021 19:19

It's weird, but the Prince Philip we've been hearing about since last Friday seems to be quite different to the one presented to me, growing up in the 80s and 90s. I'm also not sure a stateless royal is QUITE the same as those we tend to class as refugees today. The connotations are quite different. A bit like the Bennett family poverty vs Cratchitt poverty.

Foobydoo · 17/04/2021 19:20

I am not a royalist and would vote to abolish the royal family if there was a referendum.
However I had a soft spot for Prince Philip. He broke the mold. I bet the stuffy palace courtiers were run ragged with him.
Yes he was rude and racist but that needs to be judged with the standards of his generation.
He lived a very privileged life but he did do his duty for 73 years so he deserved today.
A very fitting goodbye. He was obviously adored by his family.

Agree, must be a sad lonely life to live so bitterly

@Lockheart

Whenever I see anyone typing things like GOD BLESS YOU SIR etc in all caps I always get a mental image of a slightly dim Daily Mail reader on the older side of 50. The kind who constantly shares lost dog posts from 6 years ago on Facebook and is constantly changing their profile picture frame to one with the Union Jack or Poppies on it.

I don't think DoE could ever stand this kind of mindless sycophancy to be honest.

👏👏👏
Wishihadanalgorithm · 17/04/2021 19:24

The thing to remember about PP is he was just an ordinary man. He made mistakes as we all do but he served his this country almost his entire life. Yes there was immense privilege and comfort but he also faced some awful times.

He has left the legacy of the Duke of Edinburgh Award which has been so important in many young people’s lives. This is something which we should focus on today.

Being associated with the WWF is not the best thing either, in hindsight.

I'm half Irish half Iranian so I'm going to go ahead and disagree. Immense wealth and privilege, apart from that just like someone's slightly embarrassing racist grandad.
