What a wonderful man Prince Philip was

He really was a remarkable man and what a sad day it's been watching the funeral. Hearing all the stories about his life, I have laughed, cried and been somewhere in between. I know it's not really a discussion topic but I wanted to show my respect to His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. GOD BLESS YOU SIR

OP, if you've been reading MN since last week, at least (and I'm sure you have Wink), you'll know there's been this interesting battle between the "I ❤ Prince Phillip" and the "I couldn't stand the man".

Your post does seem like a shitbomb thrown to get one of the sides fuming - only I can't really tell which side that is 🤔 [Hmm, help me here. I'm thinking really hard]

Prince Philip spent years supporting a young man after he was paralysed in an accident the night before they were due to compete against each other in an equestrian event.

The tragedy happened in 1984 when Andrew Cowdery, then 21, had a life-changing accident after hitting his head during a swimming pool dive.

He had been due to compete against the Duke of Edinburgh in a carriage driving event at Windsor Great Park the following day but instead was fighting for his life in hospital.

When the Duke heard what had happened he immediately offered his extensive sympathy and support to Andrew and his family - and continued to do so for over 25 years.

Always makes me laugh when people comment about someone who was not a friend, about how they were as a person, positive or negative. They don't know how it is. Not at all. It's just a persona. Loads kept out of the press. etc etc. There is an incredible distance between the Royals' lives, and most people's lives. We haven't got a clue. We can't judge anything based on having met them at the opening of a new hospital wing and heard him or the Queen give us 2 sentences of inane small talk. "Do you enjoy it? It looks marvellous." etc etc. Translates into "oh, I met the Queen, she was lovely!"

Makes me laugh even more when people come to such conclusions based on having watched The Crown.

i dont think he stood for any nonsense

I haven't actually seen other threads due to illness. So I honestly am being painted in a horrible light here for no reason.

The Duke of Edinburgh undertakes many Royal duties. To date His Royal Highness has fulfilled over 18,567 official engagements excluding those accompanying The Queen, an average of 371 each year. In 2001 he undertook 363 solo engagements in the UK and abroad.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 17/04/2021 18:45

No I didnt actually. I respect the man immensely. I'm loyal to the crown and always will be. As a protestant from Northern Ireland, I respect the Royal Family and always will do. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

Fellow woman from Ulster here and I’m embarrassed for you. I don’t know anyone in NI who gets on like this and isn’t mercilessly mocked.
Sure like the royals (I’ll have to disagree with you but fine) but why the fuck bring NI into it? Wise up and realise what you’re doing, that is if you aren’t on a deliberate wind up.
The last thing NI needs right now is this kind of inflammatory horseshit associated with what is already a difficult time.

Unsure33 · 17/04/2021 18:46

He was connected and supported over 800 charities .

I haven't watched the crown. Is it good?

Then to add fuel to your fire you bring up being a Protestant from NI which again bring up NI is controversial in all the troubles that habe been kicking off there in recent weeks and again umpteen thread

I was thinking this. Just as NI is in the headlines.

PredominantlyPurple · 17/04/2021 18:47

If you’d been his generation there’s a good chance you’d never have reached your 30s

Unless you had pots of money. The best housing and healthcare that money can buy.

Arrowheart · 17/04/2021 18:47

@Lockheart

Whenever I see anyone typing things like GOD BLESS YOU SIR etc in all caps I always get a mental image of a slightly dim Daily Mail reader on the older side of 50. The kind who constantly shares lost dog posts from 6 years ago on Facebook and is constantly changing their profile picture frame to one with the Union Jack or Poppies on it.

I don't think DoE could ever stand this kind of mindless sycophancy to be honest.

So true! 😃
HHSchultz · 17/04/2021 18:47

Genuine question, what made him a wonderful man?

Thanks for your embarrassment, but I dont need it. But thankyou anyway

I didn't know him so have no idea what he was like.

All the wealth of the Royals sickens me though.

@Whereisthewarmth From watching the crown however, I do like his cheeky irreverence

Are you actually joking? You think The Crown is real life???

Unsure33 · 17/04/2021 18:49

@ZaraW

If you read the facts about him , he probably did more in say any 5 years of his life than you will achieve in a lifetime .

It’s not what life serves you and put in front of you , it’s what you do with it .

AllThatIAmRoom101 · 17/04/2021 18:50

@BrumBoo

Wow, your so smart, NOT!

*You're

You've become rather petulant since being outed....

I haven't been outed thankyou. I left a post saying exactly how I feel and have been attacked left right and centre. I'm sorry for having an opinion

What will you do when Northern and Southern Ireland reunite ( which they will) and you have no royal family anymore?

He was connected and supported over 800 charities .
That was his job, surely, for which he was paid handsomely?
