Hello, just dropping in with a reminder that personal attacks are against our Talk Guidelines and to please try and avoid this thread becoming another bunfight. Peace and love.

Iknowthingsthatwillhappen · 24/09/2020 21:01

Um, can't we all be a bit nicer to each other? Sad

Happy to. But don't let anyone on here talk of 'manners' without qualifying that here and elsewhere

Trut · 24/09/2020 21:13

I think the boundaries between personal and public are murky for the RF. I mean, they are in a public role because of their personal situation, being born or married into a family.

It may be that Harry was told my PC or the queen that he couldn’t vote/RF don’t vote and he assumed it was convention or law? I imagine he didn’t contact a lawyer to see if his dad/ grandma were right. You sort of just think it is.

Does it really matter? He was, I assume, told he couldn’t vote presumably by the queen or king in waiting and he took it at face value.

Roussette · 24/09/2020 21:16

Exactly.

I said upthread he was bound by protocol and/or loyalty to the Queen because probably no one in his family voted. It was the way it was then.

I've said this in all sorts of ways on this thread. So I agree.

Saying he should've voted back then is silly. It's very different when you're 18 and know no different.

Trut · 24/09/2020 21:17

Mulling it over, I don’t see why the queen can’t vote? She may need be neutral in her political role but she must have the same rights as the rest of us?

Trut · 24/09/2020 21:18

@Roussette sorry, I didn’t read the full thread. Didn’t mean to repeat what you said!

Iknowthingsthatwillhappen · 24/09/2020 21:18

He is 36, Im sure that he could have checked out the reasons whether he could vote or not if he had really been interested.

OP posts:
Roussette · 24/09/2020 21:19

No probs!

Voting is or can be private. The queen, I can understand maybe shouldn't vote, but all the other members of the RF should be able to

Roussette · 24/09/2020 21:20

When he is 18, I doubt whether he would have wanted to!

A different time. Being brought up in the RF. Following what everyone does.

OP posts:
WatershipDown7 · 24/09/2020 21:23

Funny, I don’t think he cared at all that he didn’t vote until a certain person came on the scene.

Iknowthingsthatwillhappen · 24/09/2020 21:28

But he's had 18 years to check out his voting rights? Not just told at 18 then conveniently forgotten to ask!

@Iknowthingsthatwillhappen thank you, really interesting. From your link

^^Technically the Queen and members of the Royal Family can vote as there’s no law against it. However Parliament guidelines state it is considered unconstitutional for the Monarch or their family to vote in an election.

So clear as mud

froggygoneacourting · 24/09/2020 21:30

Out of curiosity as there been any news on whether Harry is pursuing US citizenship? I assume he would.

stairway · 24/09/2020 21:41

I like was wondering if Trump would be able to block any citizen attempt? Although he seems to dislike Meghan rather than Harry. Also Harry would have to give up his royal titles wouldn’t he. I thought what Trump said was actually fairy restrained for Trump regarding Megan’s influence attempt. He was basically just saying she’s a difficult person which tbh she probably is.

Roussette · 24/09/2020 21:41

@WatershipDown7

Interesting you should say that
I met my DH relatively late in life and there's lots I've learnt from him and vice versa

I was useless and pretty uninformed at 18.
It's not about not knowing, it's just someone sometimes brings a different perspective into your life and opens your eyes. I imagine that's Harry

Is Trump likely to be re-elected and in a position for this to be a genuine concern? Ultimately, I would imagine the President would be able to block but I would have thought there would need to be a proper justification.

They really need to drop their stance of poor Harry leading such a terrible life before he met Meghan and was empowered to leave the UK.

But it might be how they feel at the moment 😃

It must be hard having your personal and professional life so meshed, a bit like living in a cult really, where you think odd customs are normal.

I couldn’t imagine having my grandma as my boss and having all my actions (eg, voting) determined by her and her beliefs.

So maybe he does feel that he was constrained before, and is now empowered with MM?

Irritating for outsiders who have been funding RF but not unreasonable from his individual perspective.

In the voting video he says that he will not be allowed to vote in the US in "this election". That suggests that at some point in the future he will be allowed to vote. Perhaps he will pursue US citizenship.
SunbathingDragon · 24/09/2020 22:56

I haven’t seen or heard any news pertaining to Harry and US citizenship. The fact he only owns one property, and it is in America makes me think he sees it as a more permanent residence (for now, at least) so I would speculate it’s very likely. However, without a pandemic happening perhaps he would have spent more of the last six months in the U.K. and given a different impression. Considering he is indicating he has a passion about US politics, again I think he would want to be able to have that opportunity to vote which means citizenship.

Does anyone know whether he would be able to have dual nationality or would he have to renounce his U.K.? I’m assuming Archie has both nationalities but his would be by virtue of birth.

Viviennemary · 24/09/2020 23:07

I'm sure I read Meghan owns the new house.

Iknowthingsthatwillhappen · 24/09/2020 23:35

Presumably as Harry is so impassioned about politics now, he will vote in the uk?
