According to the Oxford Learners Dictionary (which I would use over a Wikipedia definition as wikipedia can be easily edited by the general public) the definition of a showgirl is:

“A female performer who sings and dances in a musical show”

I think this is what the original definition of a showgirl was. I feel like that awful 90s film with Elizabeth Berkeley in it called Showgirls has helped cement its reputation as a derogatory term (although it might have become more unfavourable earlier than this) but I’ve heard my grandad, who worked in musical theatre as a musician back in the 40s & 50s, use the word to describe the female actresses in his show. So I don’t think it’s considered derogatory by older generations. We obviously don’t know who said it, but if it was an older member of the family I feel it’s fair to point out that they might have meant it a cute joke “the Prince & the showgirl’ rather than likening her to a stripper.

Mac Donald's days after surgery? How very dare he!
I've seen lung cancer patients outside hospitals smoking cigarettes after treatment, doesn't mean their cancer wasn't real or serious!
Also if you are from the U.K. as you state , please stop saying perking instead of pecking!
You would know the difference.

SunbathingDragon · 02/08/2020 18:42

TM might have been at or with a McDonald’s a few days after his operation but he was definitely still in recovery mode. There is a big difference between being able to go somewhere nearby to gently get some food and to manage a long haul flight.

Nanasueathome · 02/08/2020 18:43

Someone..or several someone’s..obviously fed all of the information to Scobie and Durand in order for them to write the book
These persons must have obtained the information from somewhere/someone
Were they party to the private conversations between H and W?
If not, considering H goes on about privacy, then somewhere along the line there must have been conversations with H&M detailing everything

ajandjjmum · 02/08/2020 18:43

I read he was staying in a budget motel after his discharge from hospital, so McDonalds was probably one of the few food choices available. Not the greatest, but better than starvation!

meercat23 · 02/08/2020 18:43

Rousette. Re your point about none of us knowing what happened. Just a little while ago you were happy to tell about twitter reports that PW and AK colluded to stop MM having access to the Queen's jewels. Let's be consistent

derxa · 02/08/2020 18:44

But since TM was spotted with Macdonals a few days later, he clearly did not have as serious a condition as your father. The second part of the sentence is a non sequitur. People regularly don't follow doctors' orders.

Thisfucker · 02/08/2020 18:48

Mummy195
Well, I was not aware of TM having serious heat problems since he was constantly papped with MacDonalds. I know he did have a Cath right before the wedding, not heart surgery for sure. A Cath is done in about 30 minutes, you recover within a day or so.
In your head Thomas Markle eats MacDonalds so he doesn't have heat, I assume you mean heart problems. Who the hell is Cath?

Nanasueathome · 02/08/2020 18:48

What was in the Macdonald’s bag TM was carrying?
You have no idea what he bought

I want a MacDonalds NOW! Is Angela Kelly around, I undertand she does a very good home delivery service.

And of course TM could have been out and about after his cardiac procedure and eating MacDonalds. Poor soul deserved a takeaway treat after all that he'd been through.

jeffgoldblumlovespenguins · 02/08/2020 18:50

Damn right!
Pass me a Big Mac now! (After you get yours Harry!)

@myrtleWilson

Peace and Love Folks... (not acting as thread police, honestly, but we managed a nice atmosphere the last few days...)

In hair related news, I've only just read that MM had two different hairstylists for day and evening (not a criticism) and have also read that KM's hairstylist also did all the bridal party and some of the RF too - he must have been on about a pint of espresso to get through all of that Grin.

In an interview he (hair stylist) described how PW 'helped' with the styling for KM's evening hair - I had visions of PW doling out bobby pins or wafting the curling tongs... but no, he moved an antique heavy mirror so stylist could show KM the back of her hair...

Thats funny. As i was reading it I was expecting you yo say he actually helped 🍔

I doubt if an of the royal young men know much about the tiara protocol.

No, I did NOT. Scroll back and read my posts. Someone posted this and I queried it. The new quoting facility may well look like I was the one to say it but I was not. I quoted someone and said 'if this is the case, this is awful'.

I am consistent.

I don't remember seeing a photo of Kate in her evening dress - were any released? I know Meghan looked gorgeous. And Eugenie.

Rousette I didn't realise you were quoting someone else so apologies for that.

ButteryPuffin · 02/08/2020 19:00

I thought a lot of us on here agreed We Don't Know What Happened

There are quite a few posts in the last few pages making blithe assertions about what medical procedures Thomas Markle had done, how fast he recovered, and what he ate afterwards. Those things would fall into the We Just Don't
Know category for me unless some high quality sources for the info can be given.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 02/08/2020 19:00

Is it the G&T or am I the only one who thinks perking sound a bit indecent...?

Wow - thanks Myrtle.

She looks beautiful - but why the cardigan? Loved her daytime dress. I wonder if the Royals have to have an evening dress, so that the main one is still perfect for all the exhibitions? Or maybe I'm just very old, and it's the done thing now!

On my second - missing the point of everything! Grin
TracyBeakerSoYeah · 02/08/2020 19:04

Possibly the 'showgirl' reference came from Prince Philip as we all know he doesn't have a filter & doesn't realise what's he thinks is a joke or compliment can be considered downright rude.
PP even calls HMQ 'Cabbage or Old Cabbage' as one of his many pet names for her. Now that's not very flattering but he/they see it as a term of affection.
Perhaps Meghan should have said thank you Captain Birdseye (reference to Philip's Navy Career) & Philip probably would have thought that was hilarious too.

Roussette · 02/08/2020 19:05

It was me who referenced the Dan Wootton [source check] saying William and AK schemed like they were in an episode of GOT [also made it clear I thought it a silly suggestion, think I am saying this for the ummm fourth time now]. It was not @Roussette

Gin and dubonnet anyone Wink

milveycrohn · 02/08/2020 19:10

I'm someone who would have preferred Beatrice's wedding than Meghan's. Weddings are incredibly stressful, and more so if it's being televised etc.
The moral here is, don't borrow a tiara from your future Grandmother-in-law, especially if she happens to be the Queen.

I note from the documentary about P. Anne last week, when asked if she would wear a tiara for a sculpture 'sit'. One of her reasons why not, is that she would have her hair done differently with a tiara. (Amazing, as i thought P. Anne had kept the same hairstyle for the last 50 years!).
