Does anyone drink dubonnet anymore?

Sales have halved since the Queen Mum passed! Grin
mrscampbellblackagain · 02/08/2020 19:12

Apparently Kate planned to wear a flower crown initially as wasn't sure she would be loaned a tiara.

Read this around the time of her wedding so can not provide a source just struck me as funny. She also apparently met resistance from the RF as she didn't wear her hair up on her wedding day which was the norm.

myrtleWilson · 02/08/2020 19:12

@mrscampbellblackagain what does it even taste of?

mrscampbellblackagain · 02/08/2020 19:13

Grin @ajandjjmum

There is always lots of commentary about how much the Queen Mum drank but lordy she lived to a good age didn't she?

mrscampbellblackagain · 02/08/2020 19:14

Apparently it is spicy and fruity! I don't like gin very much either so pretty sure it wouldn't be the drink for me.

ajandjjmum · 02/08/2020 19:14

She did - and enjoyed life. Left her daughter with a hell of a bank overdraft to clear though! Grin

Am quite touched by the idea of Kate contemplating buying a back up tiara at Debenhams just in case.... She did rock a flower crown on her Pacific Island tour mind (but Lordy controlling her wavy hair must have been a battle there!)

The Wiki definition of showgirl quoted above
(“a female dancer or performer in a stage entertainment show intended to showcase the performer's physical attributes, typically by way of revealing clothing, toplessness, or nudity") fits Meghan quite well, if you’ve seen her barbecue piece.

meercat23 · 02/08/2020 19:23

Rousette No that's fine. I do think that we just don't know what happened does still apply though.

Eaumyword · 02/08/2020 19:30

I'm sure Queeny still enjoys a Dubonnet? Wasn't it 'the' sophisticated drink of its time and Princess Anne had huge 3 day event success in the 1970's on a beautiful bay called...Dubonnet!
Back to tiaras (blissful) I remember Fergie had a flower crown and then either popped on a tiara or it was underneath the flowers.
I'm just watching the Princess Grace documentary and oh my, she was so beautiful, elegant and talented. I still wouldn't want a royal life for all the palaces in the world, it really seems a gilded cage.

FIL is a big fan!
AnneOfQueenSables · 02/08/2020 19:33

Gosh I go out for a walk and suddenly we're back to gossip against W&K; accusations against other posters and bad faith in abundance.

Perhaps to our list of cultural differences we should have added generational differences because showgirl and baggage seem to be interpreted differently depending on how old you are.

We don't know who used those words or if they were used at all. Unless we're now saying the FF book is to be taken as true despite H&M saying they didn't authorise or contribute to it?

Eaumyword · 02/08/2020 19:33

What am I on about? Anne's horse was Doublet, not Dubonnet!
Queeny still enjoys a daily lunch time tipple though apparently. Grin

Like the link, but Princess Anne's horse was Doublet! Unless she had a secret Dubonnet hidden away! Grin

Oops and I'm so slow at typing, it's all moved on again. Sorry! Blush

She doesn't drink, no wonder she is so slim still.

For some reason i am now fondly remembering CHizano
Can you still get that?

mrscampbellblackagain · 02/08/2020 19:41

I was quite partial to a cinzano and lemonade! Was it cinzano that joan Collins and leonard Rossiter used to do the ads for or martini?

My0My · 02/08/2020 19:44

The Prince and the Showgirl: Film with Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe. That’s the showgirl reference!

Myimaginarycathadfleas · 02/08/2020 19:47

"A showgirl is a female dancer or performer in a stage entertainment show intended to showcase the performer's physical attributes, typically by way of revealing clothing, toplessness, or nudity."

Much of which MM has done (on film if not on stage), so not inaccurate, but I do actually think rude.

I heard a senior commentator use this phrase early on with something of a smirk as though he was being terribly witty, and I was taken aback. Obviously I recognised the reference but I think we are well past the time when it's acceptable to describe a grown woman in those terms.

A few further thoughts.

If MM had organised for her hairdresser to fly in from Paris it seems bizarre not to also have made arrangements the other end with regards the tiara. She would have had hours if not days to do so.

And AK is much more than a dresser, her title is Personal Advisor to Her Majesty (The Queen's Wardrobe). She is no mere "servant". Even if she were, she isn't obliged to accede to impossible demands if she found herself on the receiving end of them.

My father in law worked on that movie.
myrtleWilson · 02/08/2020 19:49

No way - Harry - did he get to speak to the first MM at all?

AnneOfQueenSables · 02/08/2020 19:50

Is your father-in-law Colin Clark? I loved his book about the making of the movie.

No, he was one of the execs.

FWIW I don't think we should have to provide a source for everything mentioned here @mrscampbellblackagain. I know it's tedious to keep asking, and most of it is clearly either our opinion or stuff in the public domain or fairly inconsequential. It's when matters like someone's medical condition are pronounced and stated as fact, with no sense of where that info comes from, that I think sources would help.
