I assume she could discontinue her case if she paid costs.

Putting all these irrelevant issues in pleadings could mean they are struck again, with costs awarded against her.

All this tells me is that there is an audience for this lawsuit, and it’s not news outlets.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 02/07/2020 10:17

If someone can explain this I would be eternally grateful.

MM is claiming that the letter that she sent to her father was private. If it was so private how could “the five” know about it’s existence, the contents and be able to quote it almost verbatim?

I think it would be nigh on impossible for 5 separate individuals to have so much information unless it came directly from MM.

BarleylemonPenguin · 02/07/2020 10:22

It's completely ludicrous, totally hot-headed

Having read some of the comments in the media following the recent blast of publicity from HaM's camp, (wedding worth one billion to the economy, unsupported by the RF, no knowledge of friends speaking out), we are now at the point where the immediate response from the public to anything they say is one of incredulity, denial and dismissal. This is a terrible position to be in for their 'brand'. If they are not taken seriously now, what hope do they have in the future?

Viviennemary · 02/07/2020 10:55

The latest seems to be that she told two friends about the letter then they told the other three. And of course Meghan had absolutely no idea they would go to the press and had not given permission for them to do so. One or two sources are saying the names have been leaked I've only heard of one of the folk mentioned. Legally speaking from what I read she retains copyright of the letter in this country at least.

Cluehorn · 02/07/2020 11:02

Well if that’s true then she has some truly shit friends. Imagine being gossiped about in the most public way by the very people who are supposed to have your back?

Strictly speaking not even friends. People magazine described them as

Meghan's inner circle – a longtime friend, a former co-star, a friend from LA, a one-time colleague and a close confidante'

They are certainly a gossipy bunch.

Oldbutstillgotit · 02/07/2020 11:34

I am wondering if the RF will issue a statement. I know it would be unusual however we are in an unusual situation.
I also wonder how HM etc feel about H ‘s speech about endemic racism ?

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 02/07/2020 11:39

Having just read the latest blind gossip I am wondering if MM will now sue them...

calmcoolandcollected · 02/07/2020 11:52

Consider the logic of five friends noting how depressed Meghan is, and deciding a People Magazine article about her relationship with Dad would be just the thing to cheer her up.

Cartesiandebt · 02/07/2020 12:07

Having read it, it's glaringly obvious (to me, at least) that the letter to her father was quite deliberately written in the hope that he would promptly release it to the media for publication.

It conveniently presents Meghan's version of events and responds to all the issues she felt unable to respond to directly, because of being muted by the RF.

Unfortunately for her, this plan failed when her demoralised father neglected to sell the letter to the press.

Months pass. Finbally, in frustration at being unable to get her point across publically, Meghan implements Plan B - which involves getting the five 'friends' to introduce the letter's contents into the equation, but crucially, implying that it was a kinder, more loving sort of letter than Thomas Markle would have perceived it to be.

Thomas Markle duly takes the bait and releases the letter to the press. Unfortunately for MM, it really doesn't have the desired affect - because she has completely misjudged how the public would react to hearing 'her side of the story'. This is familiar terrain - it has happened several more times with various leaks via H&M's contacts about their plans, thoughts and activities.

And so we end up in the extraordinary situation in which Meghan is effectively suing the Mail for publishing a letter that she fully intended them to publish all along.

Viviennemary · 02/07/2020 12:20

I've read the bits of the letter that were in the DM a while ago. From what I remember if doesn't show her in a very good light. Over emotional to say the least. Heart broken in a million pieces. I'd be embarrassed if I wrote such a spew of garbage never mind seeing it in the press.

Cartesiandebt · 02/07/2020 12:36

Yes but Meghan clearly regards her unique brand of overly florid prose as 'good writing', it's along the same lines as the content on her Tig blog and on the Sussex Instagram account. She sees herself as a writer (she requested that a 'quill' be featured on her personal coat of arms).

SunbathingDragon · 02/07/2020 12:39

I’ve looked at the letter and I feel I usually have a fairly good memory but I would not be able to quote a letter someone else sent word for word if that someone was chatting to me about it. So the thought that MM could have told a couple of people and they remembered exactly what the letter said and told three other people who also remembered it, isn’t plausible to me.

It also doesn’t read like a letter to a loved one. I do think the intention had been for the public to see it and when TM didn’t do anything with it, that plan backfired and so the People article came about. That backfired even more and is continuing to do so. As a PP said, People check before the publish and I wonder if the court will ask them to confirm doing so or not.

People magazine always confirms statements with the person reported on, or their publicist

I wasn't aware of this, but if it's generally known then I expect Justice Warby will learn of it too
It's doubtful that anyone with sense ever believed Meghan knew nothing about the "5 friends" talking to the magazine, but I'm not sure what the hell the point is in making a claim which can so easily be shot to bits

The whole thing's just becoming a tawdry mess

Cartesiandebt · 02/07/2020 12:55

The whole thing's just becoming a tawdry mess

I think we can all agree on that.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/07/2020 12:59

Not quite the point I know, but anyway what's a "Tig" when it's at home?

Where did it come from? What does it mean?

OVienna · 02/07/2020 13:00

GBP 1bn in tourism revenue. For crying out loud. And in any case: what's that got to do with the price of fish???

YgritteSnow · 02/07/2020 13:05

Consider the logic of five friends noting how depressed Meghan is, and deciding a People Magazine article about her relationship with Dad would be just the thing to cheer her up.

That made me snort.

ArriettyJones · 02/07/2020 13:14

It’s an abbreviation of a mispronunciation of Tignanello wine. Which was somehow symbolic of something for her.

She obviously realised, or was told, at some point that she was pronouncing it incorrectly, but she was stuck with “The Tig” as her blog name by then. In fairness, it’s no sillier than “Goop”.

LaMarschallin · 02/07/2020 13:15

OVienna

GBP 1bn in tourism revenue.

Quite.
All generated because people were so interested to see the wedding of that world-famous actress, Meghan Markle, to that non-entity (Herbie? Hooray?) that nobody had ever heard of.

Cartesiandebt · 02/07/2020 13:16

Not quite the point I know, but anyway what's a "Tig" when it's at home?

I gather it's an abbreviation of Tignanello, supposedly Meghan's favourite wine. Possibly an affectation acquired from her controversial friend JM in Toronto.

ArriettyJones · 02/07/2020 13:17

She explains it herself to Larry King a minute into this video;
