You can get a few pages free on Kindle as a preview. That might be all I can stomach.

BlueChangling · 05/05/2020 18:57

Anne also married a Henry, got him to step away from something he held dear, the Catholic Church. Both have a ginger child.

Fingers crossed the similarlites don't get as far as the beheading.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 05/05/2020 19:06

It's Archie's birthday tomorrow. Who's getting the photos do you reckon?

BlueChangling · 05/05/2020 19:09

People Magazine, with a fee "donated" to Archewell

CallmeAngelina · 05/05/2020 19:13

And who's getting an organic, sugar-free, taste-free cake made for him? Hmm
And probably few presents apart from donations to charity.
All very worthy, no doubt, but doesn't sound much fun.
And wouldn't you just LOVE to be a fly on the wall with the proposed FaceTime with W&K and the kids?! Awkward, or what?

ButteryPuffin · 05/05/2020 19:13

Oh yes, that's a good point. If they had their new Insta up and running, it would be the perfect time to make the photo available that way and bring in followers without having to deal with the press. In fact if they don't do that, I will consider them to have missed a trick.

ButteryPuffin · 05/05/2020 19:15

Where's the story about them planning to call the Cambridges tomorrow?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 05/05/2020 19:19

@ButteryPuffin it's in The Sun, and then repeated in the DM. Read it carefully though and you'll see it's just Katie Nichols speculating. None of it is based in fact.

CallmeAngelina · 05/05/2020 19:21

Embarrassed to admit it was from here

Wolfgirrl · 05/05/2020 19:26

Why are you blaming Ann Boleyn? Henry was the King and by all accounts very stubborn, I'm sure she didn't 'make' him do anything. He was hardly under the thumbs of his wives, look how he treated them in the end 😬

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 05/05/2020 19:33

I am not British, but I thought Henry VIII wanted to annul the wedding to his first wife (who was related to the pope, a major reason he refused) - mainly as he wanted an heir. He also seemed quite keen to get his hands on the massive property owned by the Catholic Church from what I recall.

I cannot remember this being a massive love story where Anne “captured” him

BlueChangling · 05/05/2020 19:33

@Wolfgirrl. I'm taking a leaf out of Meghans book and will be implementing a zero engagement policy to your questions, before you try and derail the entire thread again. Ta ta dear.

Wolfgirrl · 05/05/2020 19:38

@bluechangling

Derail it? I was replying to a previous comment 😂😂

I thought you would all be stunned that my comment didnt include anything about the Cambridges!

I've been reading a lot about Ann Boleyn lately so wanted to stick up for her 😊

And just like MM you broke your own zero engagement policy by replying to me 😂😂

wombandovaries · 05/05/2020 19:40

Ah but Anne Boleyn was talking to her dad... Wink

Wolfgirrl · 05/05/2020 19:45

@MoreHippoThanPenguin

From what I've heard you're spot on.

I think there was an emotional affair between them for years but she refused to sleep with him. I think Henry saw her as a solution to several problems - he needed a son which Catherine of Aragon wasn't providing, he wanted to sleep with Ann and it was another reason to reform the Church (with the perks you mentioned above).

Catherine was previously married to Henry's older brother (but didnt consummate the marriage) who then died, so Henry tried to use a passage from the Bible along the lines of 'men that marry their brother's wife shall be born no sons' (dont quote me on that!). But the Pope refused the annulment as Catherine was very compelling in her testimony to save her marriage.

Back when royals were exciting, eh! Smile

Nikhedonia · 05/05/2020 19:58

Oh bloody hell, I didn't realise there was a new thread! I've missed out Grin

SunbathingDragon · 05/05/2020 20:15

I will be getting the Kindle version. No need to fell trees for this! Plus I can then report back super quickly.

Please don’t inflate their egos further by buying it. Anything of even vague interest will be published in the papers free of charge.

Henry VIII wanted a male heir and Catherine of Aragon was deemed too old and a failure in that respect (too many miscarriages, a baby boy who died as an infant and a daughter).

mamansnet · 05/05/2020 20:20

Catherine of Aragon was naturally very keen to hold on to her position as Queen, and with her being from the very powerful and devout Catholic Spanish royal family (the daughter of a King no less), the Pope didn't really want to piss them off. Don't think he was related to her though.

Anne Boleyn might only have been the catalyst for Henry's actions, but it was all done in his pursuit of her. She has no doubt been demonised by history, but I reckon she played Henry like a charm. Might he have gone so far for another woman? He had other mistresses, after all.

Similar thing with Wallis Simpson. Some accounts say she never actually wanted to marry Edward VIII but felt forced to go through with it. Not sure I believe that she didn't encourage him in the beginning though.

I do wonder if both kings would have gone quite so far in their actions were they not being utterly cockteased.

Wolfgirrl · 05/05/2020 20:34

@mamansnet

Another 'blame the woman' campaign Hmm

I don't know if he wouldve gone so far for another woman, but he had Ann beheaded. So he can't have been so enthralled with her that he couldn't think for himself.

ButteryPuffin · 05/05/2020 20:40

@SunbathingDragon I don't disagree on the ego front. But I had said earlier I was going to get it on behalf of interested MNers, who can then avoid buying it themselves (I'm still working and on full pay so I can better afford it than some) and also that I will regard it as a purchase supporting the publishing industry and the people in it who've had to work with them. That won't have been easy, and don't forget they won't get anywhere near all the money.
Also, I fully imagine they will complain that they've been misrepresented in the 'distorted' 'dishonest' newspaper versions of the book. I will overcome that crime by seeing for myself and telling you guys Smile

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 05/05/2020 20:42

Henry VIII would listen to anyone who told him what he wanted to hear... which seems really quite relevant to today's Henry to me.

7Worfs · 05/05/2020 20:45

Reading up on English history, you couldn't swing a cat in a palace room without hitting a Henry or a Catherine. Grin

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 05/05/2020 20:46

And in fact the only way to survive H VIII was to tell him what he wanted to hear...

Wolfgirrl · 05/05/2020 20:48

So who was he listening to when he decided to behead two of his wives?

Even a woman who was murdered by her husband hundreds of years ago can't escape being blamed for his actions 🙄

7Worfs · 05/05/2020 20:49

Wasn't the second beheadee sleeping around?
