A continuation of the thread discussing the Cambridges' contribution to the pandemic.

@Mamamia456 nearly half the population have it. You would think it would be quite a good tool to get an overview of public opinion.

Pelleas · 28/04/2020 19:44

Pelleas - Not at all, loads of people in the UK who like the royals don't have Instagram

I realise that (though not a Royal fan, I don't have it myself) but you said of the Instagram likes 'shows how popular they are' so I was just demonstrating that it doesn't.

So first you were saying 1.5 million likes must mean the public love the royals, now we have broken it down a bit you're saying the likes arent an accurate reflection as not everyone has instagram 🙄

Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 19:48

The statistical evidence is a bit inconvenient, isn’t it? I can see why you’re ignoring it.

Wolfgirrl · 28/04/2020 19:52

It says the royals are most popular with older people and less popular with younger people which is nothing we didnt already know. cant see the rest of it as it asks you to sign up.

Mamamia456 · 28/04/2020 19:52

Wolfgirrl - Nearly half of the population would be around 32 million not 24 million. A lot of older people don't have Instagram, but imagine if they did, there would be even more likes on that cute picture of Louis.

blettedmedlar · 28/04/2020 19:55

@mamamia456 well apparently nothing changed for this particular royal!

Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 19:57

It says 57% of 18-24 year olds support the monarchy, rising to 77% of over 65s. You don’t have to sign up to see that. Inconvenient, isn’t it?

Mamamia456 · 28/04/2020 19:58

blettemedlar - Which royal would that be then?

Pelleas · 28/04/2020 19:58

More than half in the youngest age group, rising to over three quarters in the oldest.

The problem with polls is that when answering, many Royal supporters make the fundamental error of imagining they can pick and choose their monarch. This 2017 poll (link below) showed that only 22% of people are in favour of Charles becoming king, whereas 51% support the next kingship going straight to William.

But the essence of the monarchy means that can't happen

So, actually, the percentage in favour of the actual monarchy we have - not a version of it they've invented themselves - is arguably as low as 22%.

So? I dont know what point you're all trying to make?

blettedmedlar · 28/04/2020 20:00

@mamamia456 I won't say on here as it would be outing.

Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 20:00

OK @Pelleas. 🤣

Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 20:02

The Sun’s even more in favour as only 14% say they don’t want a monarch at all.

Wolfgirrl · 28/04/2020 20:03

Royalists are strange. They insist being royal is a life of dull servitude, let want to inflict it upon people Hmm bizarre.

Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 20:04

And you say others deflect @Wolfgirrl ...

Wolfgirrl · 28/04/2020 20:04

I dont care about polls or numbers. I dont form my opinion based on what others think. It isnt an argument, it's 'Most people think that, so I'm going to think it too'.

LaurieMarlow · 28/04/2020 20:05

See, people are incapable of distinguishing between their support of the Queen and the Monarchy as an institution. You see it on here all the time.

I will be so interested to see what happens to those figures when Charlie boy gets his turn.

Wolfgirrl · 28/04/2020 20:05

Can you address that point Alsohuman?

Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 20:06

It’s quite clear most of the British population don’t agree with you so the monarchy is going to outlive you, I suspect.

Pelleas · 28/04/2020 20:06

The Sun’s even more in favour as only 14% say they don’t want a monarch at all.

Most of those in favour are answering on the fundamentally flawed basis that they can pick a monarch (any monarch, take your time!) from the pool of current royals. The very nature of the monarchy is that you can't do that. It's logically flawed to say that people voting for William as the next king (or the 'someone else' options) are voting in favour of the monarchy, because by saying that they're voting against the law of succession on which the entire premise of the monarchy is based.

OP posts:
Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 20:07

What point do you want me to address?

Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 20:09

It's logically flawed to say that people voting for William as the next king (or the 'someone else' options) are voting in favour of the monarchy, because by saying that they're voting against the law of succession on which the entire premise of the monarchy is based

That’s complete nonsense. Do you seriously believe that to be logical?

BurneyFanny · 28/04/2020 20:10

The Kardashians get lots of likes on Instagram too. Shall we give them millions of taxpayer cash too?

Mamamia456 · 28/04/2020 20:10

blettemedlar - How would it be outing, it's not as though it was just you and this very minor royal at uni is it!
