who knows, but the reason there are always a lot of reviews already on sites prior to a film’s release is because they’re out on for preview audiences precisely to get response / reviews.

I don't know if Elephants was previewed by audiences before release. I do know it was previewed by critics.

EthelMayFergus · 04/05/2020 10:06

Thanks, I'll have another look. A friend works for the BBC so I'll ask them too. The reason I'm surprised is that so many of his colleagues were delighted that he was sacked; he was not popular at work, but I suppose it's feasible that he could work in another area.

Mummy195 · 04/05/2020 10:07

Untrue in North America. Also, Elephants was released on Disney+. I don't believe it was ever intended to be released in theaters.

So there was no theatre release then. So no one walked out of theatre.

I wonder if Elephants was criticised more harshly because of rumours that another actor had already recorded it and was pushed aside?

Mummy195 · 04/05/2020 10:14

The other actor rumours had been going on. I think there was a lot of confusion. At some stage it was that Natalie P, replaced Owen W or someone. Then somehow it moved to MM was replacing someone. We will consider that another rumour till confirmed.

I’ve listened to about 15 minutes of the narration. I found it clunky. I couldn’t listen to the whole thing.

@Mummy195, I wasn’t referring to the walkout. I was referring to your false assertion on previews.

Winterlife · 04/05/2020 10:24

I know for a fact another actor (Oscar winner) had narrated the film. It’s not a secret in entertainment circles.

Mummy195 · 04/05/2020 10:26

What false assertion?

I imagine there has been NCing going on as MN referred to on our previous thread.
But I always think writing styles are distinctive, that certainly applies to me and possibly others which is why I never have. I think it is useful for when you are worried about your safety or privacy for genuine reasons. Otherwise, I findd it a bit devious TBH.

so true. its annoying as you can tell, yet the poster can pretend they are a different person.

The eleohant documentary, with Meghan’s involvement, was already in the works since 2017. The producers of it, not Bob Iger, approached Meghan for it because of her and Harry’s work with elephant conservation. Bob Iger himself said Harry didn’t ask him for a job for his wife.

The directors of the film were the ones that reached out to her because she and Harry were working with EWB director, Michael Chase, who was also involved in the film.

Bob Iger has also stated explicitly that Harry was telling him about the voiceover gig, not asking him for it that night at the theatre.
“Did you know she’s doing the voiceover?” is very similar to
“Did you know she does voiceover?”

Mummy195 · 04/05/2020 10:40

Bob Iger was at the Oscars saying pretty much what you just said ThisEnglish. This story was twisted no doubt about it. Even someone from the documentary tweeted a long time ago that MM met them when in Africa and had been tracking this documentary since early days.

Did anyone see the Milkshake Thomas the Engine. I somehow thought H would be doing a long reading or even voice over. He did a short introduction, but his contribution will go to charity.

Hmmm... I've seen the clip with PH and Bob Iger, that's not what happened. MM even laughs and says 'We're just here to pitch'. That wouldn't have made sense if they weren't there to pitch. Bob Iger also looked very uncomfortable, and look at the disbelief on Beyonce's face.

thisenglishlife · 04/05/2020 11:00

Meghan had already been of the elephant documentary by that stage. Perhaps the pitch was for something else or H&M were joking.

EthelMayFergus · 04/05/2020 11:07

Okay, a quick google informs me that her narration was recorded last October (2019), the clip of PH and Bob igor appears to be last summer, so the pitch definitely came before the recording.

Mummy195 · 04/05/2020 11:07

All I know about the video is that we were fed some of the conversation, not all of it. You also cannot hear what they are saying. You can hear Beyonce saying we love you guys and hear parts of that conversation. You can hear parts where Bob I says I didn't know that. Also parts are clearly edited out. I cannot believe that such an non-audible video would be treated as a legitimate story.

Dolphin Reef was the Disney nature film with more than one actor, not the elephant one!

Owen Wilson was the narrator, but it wasn't released. Natalie Portman then recorded the narration and it was released with her voice instead. Cecile de France also recorded for the French version.

Mummy195 · 04/05/2020 11:09

I never noted Bob I or Beyonce looking uncomfortable.

OP posts:
thisenglishlife · 04/05/2020 11:10

so the pitch definitely came before the recording.
She had already been involved with the project for a long time by that point and had been chosen by the producers of the film!

EthelMayFergus · 04/05/2020 11:11

Since it became apparent that the original narrator had been bumped out of the way, (between pitch and narration) Omid Scobie has put a different spin on this, implying that there were talks about this years ago. Omid Scobie has a vested interest in positively promoting PH and MM due to his new book Finding Freedom.

EthelMayFergus · 04/05/2020 11:14

Mummy195 Is it at all possible that there is a better and clearer video (of PH and BI) available than the one that you have seen?

EthelMayFergus · 04/05/2020 11:17

Because there is no ambiguity on the recording that I have seen and heard, yet the one you have seen sounds like it has been edited.

Mummy195 · 04/05/2020 11:21

I have not come across any, all I've seen even broadcast on TV was this clunky one that is not audible, but we are given selected subtitles. Bob I, even seems to turn and explain to his wife what he just discussed - so if even she could not hear and she is right there next to them............. I found the whole thing strange that it would be a story.

MM had been meeting with the producers since 2017.

Anyway, whatever the case, at least a charity gained a pay check for this.

MM even laughs and says 'We're just here to pitch'.

That bit I did hear but it seemed clear to me that she was making a joke rather than actually touting for work!

thisenglishlife · 04/05/2020 11:32

Exactly @Cerseirys

Filmmaker Vanessa Berlowitz has told People magazine that Meghan was first introduced to the role while she was with a herd of female elephants in Botswana with Prince Harry in 2017.

During this trip, the Sussexes worked with wildlife organisation Elephants Without Borders.

Berlowitz said: "She was absolutely intrigued by the elephants and transfixed."

She also went on to say it was during this trip that she and fellow filmmaker Mark Linfield suggested that The Duchess may be a "good fit" for the documentary.
