What was it @Samcro? I like programmes about the history of travel so it sounds like something I would enjoy.

Samcro · 05/04/2020 19:25

I think it was on channel 4 i have been taping them, was on last sunday. The one before it was about the royal train.

chrisseldah1 · 05/04/2020 19:31

@Samcro wow that’s very interesting. I have always maintained that they are all hypocrites on the issue of climate change😂. Ok I have never heard the queen preaching about it, but PC William and Harry are all hypocrites. I totally understand that they need to fly at times , but I’m glad people started calling them on it. It’s a shame that Prince Harry and M have more criticism about it this issue.

jeffgoldblumlovespenguins · 05/04/2020 19:36

Considering the Queens age , I'm surprised it's so low a number!

HarryDaylight · 05/04/2020 19:47

Thanks Samcro I'll check if the one about the royal train is on all4.

ButteryPuffin · 05/04/2020 19:48

Thanks @Samcro, I'll look on All 4.

I don't think it's fair to blame the queen for all the travelling she's done, given that the vast majority of it will have happened before the environmental impact of travel was really understood. For William and Harry, and indeed anyone travelling extensively in the present day, it's a different matter.

chrisseldah1 · 05/04/2020 20:01

Oh I agree about the queen and don’t blame her tbh. I’m sure as a head of state her travelling all over cane as part of the job. The whole flying around criticism for any celebrity or public figure is fascinating to me, I don’t know if it’s fair that they get so much stick . I get the impression that as soon as any celebrity or public figure shows concern or has opinions about climate change then the receipts are pulled about how they are two faced about the issue.

What about normal Joe who has to fly around for business all over the place and is still an advocate of reducing the carbon foot print and saving the environment? . Should he quit his job as then he can be deemed a hypocrite?. Is the issue more about taking private jets etc?. Don’t know, fascinating nonetheless. Must be hard to be a celebrity in this age, as ordinary folks will take you to task on certain issues ( which can be a good thing tbh).

Samcro · 05/04/2020 20:09

What was interesting was that the queen mother and the princess ' all flew together and it was used as a look they are doing it. So it must be safe.
Also the serving of food on china with silver cutlery. I wonder if the younger royals do that.

chrisseldah1 · 05/04/2020 20:15

@Samcro so it’s not safe for royals to fly together now? Interesting

Samcro · 05/04/2020 20:23

No i meant back then flying wasn't deemed safe, so when people saw them doing it, they thought oh it must be.
It was a good advert.
I do think there was a rule about hiers to the throne flying together. Think diana broke it when she took will on tour.
What was sad was charles waving goodbye to his parents whi were going away for 5 months. The press got a picture of him crying. So after that he was banned from waving them off. He was only little.

Chrissel, I think it is a security thing.

The (then) Swedish crown prince died 1947 aged 40. The rest of the family was not travelling with him, so his children survived. The current Swedish king was just a baby. This resulted in the current King’s uncle (Prince Bertil) preparing to become acting head of state in case his brother died and the new crown prince was below 18 years old (seemed likely at the time). In order to remain eligible, he couldn’t marry the love of his life as she was a (British ?) divorcee. He spoke to the press and explained that if they wrote about his relationship, he would give it up and that it would brake his heart, but in the interest of duty he would do it. They never wrote about it. After the current Swedish king became 18, he married his Lillian, but I believe it was too late for them to have children. They were very close to the King’s children until their deaths. This was another time.....

chrisseldah1 · 05/04/2020 20:59

@CleansUpPenguinPoo thank you for that, that’s really interesting. I guess it does make sense for security purposes, I know I hate flying with my entire family and I’m not royal😂.

I quite liked the Queen’s speech, made me emotional and I’m not a royalist haha. Just highlighted how this pandemic affects us all. I haven’t seen my husband For a few days and my kids don’t really understand why they haven’t seen him. We FaceTime
so for that I’m thankful. He normally commutes from our village to the hospital he works in and has been so tired to drive after his 14hr shifts that we decided it’s best he stays put for now.

Makes one really appreciate all the little things in life.

HarryDaylight · 05/04/2020 21:07

Your DH is a star, chrisseldah1

Roussette · 05/04/2020 21:17

Totally agree. Smile

chrisseldah1 · 05/04/2020 21:19

@HarryDaylight thank you. Chocolate definitely helps out goes the summer body..

chrisseldah1 · 05/04/2020 21:19

Oh and wish I liked gin everybody always talks about gin

PenguinOrHippo · 05/04/2020 21:20

chrissel, totally agree as well. Your husband is a hero.

And chocolate solves all problems except the fit of clothes Smile

chrisseldah1 · 05/04/2020 21:29

@PenguinOrHippo are you saying I’m fat? meanie🤣

PenguinOrHippo · 05/04/2020 21:34

Chrissel, talking about myself I’m afraid Grin. My clothes are getting quite tight.

We are stuck in a small flat and one of our daily highlights are coffee time (11am) and tea (4pm), both with homemade cake/cookies. Usually chocolate....

chrisseldah1 · 05/04/2020 21:49

Oh I reckon I’m not far behind. Lucky I’m a shit baker because if I knew how to bake I swear I’m would be doing it every day. I’m reduced to supermarket cookies, but I draw the line at supermarket cakes( hate them). Used to buy nice little ones at the local market now it’s closed, sad times..

chrisseldah1 · 05/04/2020 21:52
  • I would

What was sad was charles waving goodbye to his parents whi were going away for 5 months. The press got a picture of him crying. So after that he was banned from waving them off. He was only little.

Even sadder was when they came back and Queenie spent a week at the races before going to see him. There's footage of him jumping up and down, excited at the prospect of seeing his mum again, and all she does is shake his hand and pat him on the shoulder.

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 06/04/2020 08:10

So glad to hear someone saying they don't like gin chrisseldah1! I can't get on with it at all, never have.

Keeping it royal, Meghan has really cleaned up Harry's diet, one thing I think she certainly deserves credit for. He looks much healthier for it.

I'm pretty sure that will include moderating his alcohol intake.
