Well here we are, another thread for those who wish to discuss. We are not nasty, but we do call account on what is going on, and and what taxpayers pay for.

OP posts:
LaMarschallin · 06/02/2020 22:42

There is nothing in the US to compare with the pervasiveness and currency of the British tabloids.

The "pervasiveness" of the British tabloids is due to the fact the Britain is a tiny nation (population- and area-wise) compared with the US.

The journalism in the US is diluted by the fact that it's a huge continent.

It's a stretch of credulity to suggest the Americans only read quality publications that offer impartial news.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/02/2020 22:46

Hmm, a Bea-focused opposite of Megxit/Brexit .,, Beamain?

Excellent work, DandyD!

SenecaFallsRedux · 06/02/2020 22:48

Yes, of course. This is one of the reasons that we don't have a tabloid culture like the one in the UK. And I didn't suggest that we are all over here reading high-minded journalism. But we are not consuming anti-Meghan propaganda on a daily basis. News coverage in the US of Meghan and Harry's move has been largely sympathetic.

Butterymuffin · 06/02/2020 22:53

They're still being trailed around by photographers though. I guess they think the type of coverage is an improvement.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/02/2020 23:01

I recall that the Duchess of York was well received when she first went to America. Things didn't stay that way though.

LaMarschallin · 06/02/2020 23:01

Good.
That'll make them happy.

DandyDuchess · 06/02/2020 23:20

I haven’t seen this posted here so apologies for the repetition if it has. I saw this yesterday and thought of this thread. Can be enjoyed regardless of your perspective, either salty or sweet.

DandyDuchess · 06/02/2020 23:22

Argh I can’t post the video.

LaMarschallin · 06/02/2020 23:24

Actually, is the US media that sympathetic?

Of the top three best selling newspapers, the Wall Street Journal has a recent "letter to Meghan" warning about their tax situation.

The New York Times has this:
www.nytimes.com/2020/01/19/world/europe/harry-meghan-royal.html

LaMarschallin · 06/02/2020 23:28

And the Los Angeles Times had "Renounce your titles, you cowards":
www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2020-01-08/prince-harry-meghan-renounce-title

LaMarschallin · 06/02/2020 23:46

And the Wall Street Journal definitely isn't taking the piss here:

www.wsj.com/articles/ok-fine-ill-take-harry-and-meghans-royal-place-11578524317

Actually, the WSJ is annoying because Googling shows the full article, but copying and pasting a link shows a paywall.

But just Google "Wall Street Journal Meghan Harry" and you can read the full (unsympathetic, imo) article.

Anyway, I realise there are a lot of American newspapers.
I expect the Nebraska Newsletter or whatever is V. sympathetic.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/02/2020 23:48

That video made me smile! It reminded me of Martin Bryce in Ever Decreasing Circles, ruffling his wife Ann's fringe. She hated it!

LaMarschallin · 06/02/2020 23:56

That video made me smile!

Me too.

At no point is she gritting her teeth... Smile

rockingchaircandle · 07/02/2020 00:20

I can't read the last article, I tried googling- from the pre-paywall extract it doesn't look particularly sympathetic, but the tone sounds reasonably lighthearted. Obviously it could get worse!

The New York Times- just seems to be their factual take on the deal
As was the 'tax advice' letter- seemed to be the WSJ finding a way to glam up the Money section more than anything.
LA Times is an opinion piece. Bar the click-baity headline, there's nothing that bad, it's more aimed at the notion of class and titles than H&M. I would agree with the sentiment if we could do away with all titles! (what was that about buying cigarettes?!)

Definitely not what they had from the UK press, the viciousness and frequency. It's not that they're demanding sympathetic press, they just don't want to face harassment and racism, which from the examples here, the US media don't seem to be guilty of.

SenecaFallsRedux · 07/02/2020 00:38

Definitely not what they had from the UK press

Exactly.

Lunde · 07/02/2020 01:47

There is nothing in the US to compare with the pervasiveness and currency of the British tabloids.

Really? What about the National Enquirer? Or the celebrity gossip sites such as TMZ and Radar Online?

A lot of the original stuff about Thomas Markle came initially from the TMZ site - they boasted that they had a reporter in contact who had somehow befriended him ... of course the British tabloids were happy to print articles based on the stories from US sites

SenecaFallsRedux · 07/02/2020 03:08

Yes, really. The media landscape is very different and more diffuse and diverse in the US than in the UK, which stands to reason, considering the difference in size of the two countries. Local and statewide outlets are very important to most people, and they tend very much toward the mainstream as opposed to celebrity gossip.

CanIHaveATiaraPlease · 07/02/2020 07:31

That Haitch Has properly made me laugh out loud LaM

Seneca your knowledge is very helpful as always thank you

WinnieTheW0rm · 07/02/2020 07:37

Their friends have been leaking to The People again (they really need to find and stop this source, assuming they really do want privacy)

This time it's saying that as well as a Canadian property, H&M will be seeking a property in LA, because they want to divide their time between LA and Canada.

Didn't take long for Britain to be erased, did it?

7Worfs · 07/02/2020 08:10

They want a country with adoring masses and housetrained journos so that their image is controlled and carefully curated.

I’m guessing their next move will be the moon.

Bluerussian · 07/02/2020 08:26

I think they just want to settle down comfortably and raise their child. Of course they'll be doing other things eventually but at the moment I'm sure they do not want a lot of publicity.

The couple have to find their feet and I hope they do.

It really isn't unusual for very wealthy people (which they are), to have more than two homes*; they still have Frogmore here and I'm sure they'll come back for holidays and special events - Beatrice's wedding in May for a start, she and Harry were always quite close, maybe still are.

*Cliff Richard has three to my knowledge: his home here, one in Portugal and an apartment in Manhattan.

I read the articles, they weren't vicious. I'd say they were neutral if anything.

Maybe Harry , I doubt it Meghan will come to Beatrices wedding, not with how she left and certainly not with all the leaks they give to People about being much happier away from the RF.

Bluerussian · 07/02/2020 08:36

I hope she does go, queenofaries.

Alisaslise, what are you on and why the strawberry; a ripe cherry might have been more appropriate you rude thing :-). I haven't opened the link and don't intend to.

Butterymuffin · 07/02/2020 08:38

At the moment I don't think she will, but a lot could happen between now and May.
