Walking home from work I considered the line of succession. When I was small it was Charles, Andrew, Edward and Anne. Andrew was 'the handsome one', Edward seemed quiet, Anne was 'difficult' and Charles was all action man, being kissed by Australian ladies an the Three Degrees pop group. He made a remark about getting married at thirty - and the pressure was on. I don't think he had spent much time with Diana, and William arrived a year later.
Being pushed down the line by a baby must be difficult for the others in line to the throne, even if it is the way things work. I recall a lot of tabloid stuff about how often the line of succession doesn't work out - the queen, and her father weren't one and two in line.

GoFiguire · 20/01/2020 15:53

Philip was not made a British prince. He was already a Greek Prince.

TheMustressMhor · 20/01/2020 15:54

Warning: Pointless Information Alert:

Prince George of Kent, the Queen's uncle, and father of Prince Michael of Kent (see posts passim) died in a plane crash in the hills above the village in Scotland where my mother was born.

I thought MaisWeee would be interested in this snippet.

TheMustressMhor · 20/01/2020 15:55

Oh, and Prince Michael of Kent was but a fetus when this occurred.

Apparently H&M are setting up a production company and have interest from Netflix. It's entirely possible they could make a go of it, especially with Meghan's A list contacts. It's a better bet than relying on their own skills, which are perhaps more limited in scope.

If this is the route they're going, I'm not sure how they could have done it anyway alongside being proper working royals.

LaMarschallin · 20/01/2020 15:59

That's right. And somebody elsethread mentioned princess Alice. If they meant prince Philip's mother, she was princess Alice of Batternburg (sp?).

eggandonion · 20/01/2020 16:01

Didn't Prince William of Gloucester die in a plane crash too, so the Duke is a younger son who inherited the title?
There were loads of princes and dukes in the sixties and seventies, I can see why Charles wanted to cut back to a smaller group. I suppose in a way the antics of fringe members deflected tabloid gossip - Princess Margaret, Princess Michael and Princess Anne were all tabloid fodder at one time.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/01/2020 16:01

Not quite, GoFiguire. It's true Philip no longer used his Greek title, but the Queen actually created him a prince of the UK and all the rest in 1957

Buck House statement: "The Queen has been pleased to declare her will and pleasure that His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh shall henceforth be known as His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh"

MissEliza · 20/01/2020 16:02

@AcrossthePond55 you make a good point about Diana. She was pursued relentlessly by the paparazzi but I don't recall her ever trying to evoke public sympathy at occasions where the focus was supposed to be a charity. She certainly tried to make sure the world was on her side eg Panorama interview but never in a way that overshadowed the causes she triumphed. I do recall her stepping away from a number of charities after her separation but it wasn't done in a poor me way.
Harry should have focussed on his charity in his speech last night. A positive speech all about the way forward for the charity would have done far more for his image (and his cause) than more of 'poor me'. It shouldn't have been about him.

TheMustressMhor · 20/01/2020 16:03

There was also Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, who was married to Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester.

He was the Duke of Kent's brother. And Prince Michael of Kent's Uncle.

I think we should only permit people who understand the Queen's family tree to post on this thread.

Unless they have something interesting to say about garlic or electric cars.

I suspect the thumb screws were put on Harry to produce a statement that Wills wasn’t bullying him and that they’re reconciled.

I thought the statement was pretty puny and non-committal actually. I'm more encouraged by reports of them realising it was now or never and attempting to patch things up before Harry goes off to Canada. I'd love to see the four of them sort things out. They don't have to be best friends but feuds between siblings and their partners are always sad and divisive.

JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 16:05

I did wonder why Harry chose that opportunity to raise recent events and not just talk about the charity. Unless he knew he would only have been able to raise it on his own as Meghan wasn;t by his side. It's the sort of thing you would do together at a separate time and place.

He needs a hug I think and a reality check.

MeghanMountbattenSausage · 20/01/2020 16:06

He's leaving later in the week I read after some more 'meetings'. I wonder what all the meetings are about.

I read somewhere they were having to have more meetings because PH was "digging his heels in" about a financial settlement. I took this to mean not as much money from Daddy, and and PH wasn't very happy? I would be EMBARRASSED to be still taking money from my parents in my mid 30's. I knew someone who was married with kids who still did this (husband didn't earn that much) and she was fairly useless financially because she'd never had to earn her own living in earnest. Expected a lot of stuff for free. We're no longer friends as it happens.

Apparently H&M are setting up a production company and have interest from Netflix

Didn't Edward & Sophie do this? And it didn't make any money by all accounts. Granted, they're not in H&M league but how many "Royal Documentaries" can the world take? Hmm

JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 16:07

Philip (like Albert) is Prince Consort husband to the reigning Queen.

eggandonion · 20/01/2020 16:08

Channel 4 has frequent royal documentaries. I record them for ironing time.

TheMustressMhor · 20/01/2020 16:08

@LaMarschallin

You have confessed on a public forum (MN, no less) that you cannot ride a bike.

This may lead to your being black-balled.

You know that an ability to cycle is a sine qua non for the aspiring MNetter.

I am shocked.

OP posts:
TheMustressMhor · 20/01/2020 16:10

Fucksake.

I would be embarrassed to be taking money from my daddy if my mummy had left me £34,000,000.

OP posts:
JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 16:10

LaMarschallin have you tried an electric bike? Would that help? Wink

MeghanMountbattenSausage · 20/01/2020 16:11

@TheMustressMhor

I love garlic. But I personally believe that the national grid couldn't take it if we all switched to electric cars tomorrow. In the long term I don't think anyone is going to save any money. I mean, cars take a long time to charge so you might not be spending £40 a week on petrol but you will be spending an extra £200 a month on your electric bill you you'll actually be WORSE off.

I would like to see H&M move to an eco friendly house with electric vehicles. Then I might actually believe all this stuff they're spouting about being passionate about climate change.

meditrina · 20/01/2020 16:12

"Philip was not made a British prince. He was already a Greek Prince"

Yes, he was born a Greek prince, but before the official announcement of their engagement in July 1947, he abandoned his Greek and Danish royal titles, became a naturalised British subject, and adopted his maternal grandparents' surname Mountbatten.

He was created a British prince in 1957

TheMustressMhor · 20/01/2020 16:12

Out of interest, does anyone know if cars can be run on garlic?

OP posts:
JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 16:14

What about a wind up car? Like the wind up radio.

JulieWaltersSnaggedMyJumper · 20/01/2020 16:15

garlic releases sulphur so in theory it's possible to run on LPG.

Sorry for the red top source, but it is the case that the Queen issued Letters Patent making him at British Prince in 1957 - they're official, published, on-the-record documents
