Made a mistake and don’t want a cat!

About a month ago, a young cat turned up in my garden (live rural, lots of farms, horses/livery places, therefore always lots of cats), very skinny and obviously been in some difficulty as its neck was missing loads of hair, had healing cuts on it. Definitely not someone’s pet. I put out water and food for it, it wasn’t in great shape and while I’m really not a cat person, I couldn’t see an animal in difficulty without trying to help. Fed it for a week or so and it hung around, got its strength back.

Went on holiday for 10 days and thought it would break the cycle and the cat would move on again. Nope. The minute I got home it was there. Had lost weight again so I fed it again. And I’ve now been feeding it for 2 weeks.

It’s become completely obsessed with me. If it sees me in the kitchen it’s staring in the window/door, it’s sleeping outside the door every night, if I walk outside it’s walking around my feet. If it sit outside it’s rubbing off me and wrapping its tail round me. Or talking to me and doing the blinky eye thing.

But I don’t want a cat! I lost my last 2 pets about 6 weeks ago and I don’t want the responsibility again for a while. I’m also not really gone on cats, and definitely don’t want one in my house. I also don’t want to be responsible for vet bills and such.

I’ve rang the local rescues, they’re full. Shared in groups I’m part of, no takers.

What do I do? Do I stop feeding it? Will it move on?

I don’t owe you or anyone an update it isn’t even my thread, and I literally had nothing to update anyway even if I wanted to. I agree that not replying to people who are willing to help and the post about how OP reacted to the cat last both suggest it’s not real.

We were just concerned for the cat and wanted to know where things were at.

Anyway, we can all relax now as i think your update confirms there is no cat.

I've reported and asked if MNHQ would consider deletion, given the OP's recent posts and the fact they haven't returned after the cat abuse posts. I really don't think it should be in the Litter Tray especially.

I’m not sure if this is possible but I’d love to report to MNHQ to ask if they can get some assurance that OP will turn the cat over to a vet or one of the people who said they would take it.

I appreciate that OP won’t be coming back now, but it would be great to get some reassurance on the safety of this poor cat

I doubt there is a cat. Given how much OP has been repulsed by it throughout the thread I doubt she would allow the cat to sit on her lap, especially while she wore a white skirt. And apparently the cat hisses at everyone else so it would only be the OP in the picture.

You get people who have a weird desire to make wind-up threads up to get a reaction - like making us all worry about the cat, or to make people lose their temper etc.

I think if OP truly had a cat she wanted to move along, she would have responded to @Garman who got in touch with her about possibly taking it off her hands. I really can't imagine a situation in which she would not have seized that opportunity had the cat been real.

I know it is hard to imagine why anyone would bother.

OP, this is the result of something called “The Cat Distribution System.” I’m not making this up. It’s a thing. You have been CHOSEN. You can decide to not let the cat in the house, but it’s your cat now. It adores you. I hope when it visits you in the garden you stroke it and scratch its chin. And really, you don’t want it get injured or hungry again. I don’t know if this is allowed on Mumsnet, but could you post its picture and details to help it get adopted? Or where I live we have a neighbourhood forum. Do you have access to something like that? Or, could you resign yourself to start loving the cat back?

I missed the throwing water thing. If OP actually did that, I’ve lost all sympathy and respect for her. What horrible ash*le thing to do. Bad, OP, bad!!!

So, you wouldn’t take her to a shelter where she actually might be adopted and instead fed her and petted her and got her attached to you and trusting you so you can abuse her by throwing water on her and starving her. You don’t deserve a pet of ANY kind. If you find her dead by your front door, it will be your fault. There’s a special place in hell for you.

@Garman , I can see why that comment might have got your back up a little, but I interpreted 'The worst of it is that none of the cat takers have come back either ...' to mean that OP apparently hasn't responded to any of your offers (in which case you'd probably tell us). Not 'How dare the cat takers not come back and update us.'
