Made a mistake and don’t want a cat!

About a month ago, a young cat turned up in my garden (live rural, lots of farms, horses/livery places, therefore always lots of cats), very skinny and obviously been in some difficulty as its neck was missing loads of hair, had healing cuts on it. Definitely not someone’s pet. I put out water and food for it, it wasn’t in great shape and while I’m really not a cat person, I couldn’t see an animal in difficulty without trying to help. Fed it for a week or so and it hung around, got its strength back.

Went on holiday for 10 days and thought it would break the cycle and the cat would move on again. Nope. The minute I got home it was there. Had lost weight again so I fed it again. And I’ve now been feeding it for 2 weeks.

It’s become completely obsessed with me. If it sees me in the kitchen it’s staring in the window/door, it’s sleeping outside the door every night, if I walk outside it’s walking around my feet. If it sit outside it’s rubbing off me and wrapping its tail round me. Or talking to me and doing the blinky eye thing.

But I don’t want a cat! I lost my last 2 pets about 6 weeks ago and I don’t want the responsibility again for a while. I’m also not really gone on cats, and definitely don’t want one in my house. I also don’t want to be responsible for vet bills and such.

I’ve rang the local rescues, they’re full. Shared in groups I’m part of, no takers.

What do I do? Do I stop feeding it? Will it move on?

An alternative could be a "gift receptacle" positioned by the door ... that has an incinerator button.

She's developed the cat's trust, poor thing now doesn't know what its done wrong to have the food suddenly stop and being chased away with water when it comes near.

A couple of them I reckon would buy one themselves!

Collect the cat ,give it to the vets
It is now dependent on you feeding it
If your not going to ,then give it the vets .
Vets will not put down a healthy cat .
I can't even write what I actually want to ..

They're not disgusting animals, they're just animals.

I'm not a cat person either, but what you've done is vile. You've nurtured the animal then turned abuser, that is worthy of the disgust description.

One can only hope the cat doesn't come near you again, and finds a genuinely kind person.

I wish I hadn't read this thread. Everything seemed to point toward a positive outcome, then the OP's most recent updates turned it all around. The poor cat, after being encouraged to trust the OP and responding in an entirely natural way is now subjected to abuse. Yes, it is abusive to throw water at a cat. And if you stop feeding her after she's grown reliant on the food you've been giving her, that is appalling, especially as she's vulnerable and not able to protect herself.

Cats are not disgusting animals. The only animals on this earth that can be called disgusting are humans.

A lot of the so-called do-gooders only do their good deeds because it makes them feel good about themselves, which means more to them than the actual good deed they are doing. There’s a lot of virtue signallers out there. Unfortunately this one showed their true colours at the expense of a poor defenceless animal.

I am not a cat person. A few years ago, a neighbour (who I think is the same sort of 'animal lover' as the OP) chucked his cat out, to freeze and starve in the middle of winter. When it became clear what had happened I set up a shelter and was feeding 4x a day. Poor thing was very, very nervous but would just about let me stroke him while feeding in the end. I managed to deflea and worm and was working on a plan of getting him to vets for a check over (very thin despite all the food) and encourage him indoors. Sadly not to be as he was hit by a car. I was gutted.

I knew when I started caring for him that whatever happened, he was now my responsibility and in @DontWantACat s case, she had the option of leaving him with the vet. As others have said, PTS would be kinder than her recent behaviour which is cruel and unnatural, unlike the cat who is a) following hunting instinct and b) mistakenly thought it had a bond with this person.

Very sorry indeed for those who have lost cats and have read this thread.

OP you are so ignorant. Did you really think if you started feeding the poor cat it would just politely go away when you got bored with playing saviour to it? Are you saying you never knew that a hungry cat, or dog for that matter, would hunt and kill to feed itself and keep itself alive?

A cat known to you, that you've been feeding for weeks, that you've petted on your lap and presumably had in your car to take to the vets, being in your house is hardly a fright.

I don't believe any animal lover would react like this to being woken by a cat. It's only a cat!

Also OP dogs are out there killing rabbits, fairly regularly. And sheep, and they don't even eat them!

Animals gonna kill other animals. My gerbil ate a woodlouse the other day, shame on him for not picking on a rat or something 🙄

I'd say if you have not heard back it kind of confirms it was a wind-up, as surely no-one would not follow up on an offer like that in OP's position.
