How long do non pure bred cats normally live

Just wondering as Ds1 is worried and i wanted to reassure him.

We have 2 british short hair boy cats without health issues, both are 9 years old.

Ds1 is at university and he is worried the cats will die of old age while he is away. Can i reassure him that the cats still have a good few years left? I vaguely remember someone telling me that cats live about 10 years but I think that might be pure bred cats and moggies live longer.

Thank you. Yes, i mean domestic shorthair. We've had them since ds was 10 and they definitely miss him now he's at uni. I played some of his music on my phone after he went back after half term and they both came galloping into the kitchen, looking for him.

All the cats I’ve had have lived 12-14 years and then died of cancer or kidney failure.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 21/11/2025 23:44

One of mine is 21, completely deaf. The other is 17, has cancer the vet thinks. I’ve had two siblings who were 22 and 21.

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 22/11/2025 01:17

Our family cats have typically lived 18+ years, barring accidents.

GrumpyCowMummy · 22/11/2025 03:34

My last pussycat (rescue at approximately 12 months old). Lived to 19. My Aunt's last 2 cats each lived to 20. A school friend had hers till 23 and that was the kitten of one they found in a shed. Age unknown but already knocked up!! There's a lot that won't make that age, but 9 is barely middle aged!

Kbroughton · 22/11/2025 06:31

My half breed is 16 and going storing and she had her back leg amputated four years ago after getting hit by a car. A car dying at 9 is unlikely to be natural!

2017SoFarSoGood · 22/11/2025 06:44

Our three cats lived to be 19, 22 and 24. Current cat is 13, and still feels like a really young cat. They do get pretty spoiled and are indoor cats, so no predators.

Yamamm · 22/11/2025 06:54

My female mog litter pair. 18 then thyroid disease. 20 and old age.
My current boy has such a fabulous and expensive diet he’ll probably live to 100.

Caspianberg · 22/11/2025 06:57

Yes our cat is nearly 8 and I would say he’s still a young cat. Still sprinted around, climbs trees, active.
He would have been around 2 when Ds was born so have both grown up together

ChipDaleRescueRangers · 22/11/2025 06:58

My Persian pedigree made it to 15 and then sadly went into severe kidney failure. My second moggy got to 17 before the dreaded cancer got her. I now have a 4 year old moggy and I hope we have her for a very long time.

regularlatte · 22/11/2025 06:59

No idea but I’ve got one that will be lucky to see 6 - he’s been seemingly determined to die since he was a kitten.

The other one was a rescue and not sure of her age - I think she might be 4ish.. she’s tiny and frail looking but there’s a hardiness about her, I reckon she’ll see the children off to university.

regularlatte · 22/11/2025 07:01

There’s nothing physically wrong with him btw. He’s just incredibly stupid and I think keeping himself alive for another 12 years or so might be beyond him.

VenusStarr · 22/11/2025 07:03

My 2 moggies are going strong at 16.5years old.

My sister lost her British Blue last year at 12years old. She'd had no previous illness.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 22/11/2025 07:08

My indoor cat just turned 22

Pennyplant19 · 22/11/2025 07:09

For my daughter’s 10th birthday I took her to our local rescue and she chose 2 kittens. She is 29 soon - the 2 ‘kittens’ are still going strong!

TimeForATerf · 22/11/2025 07:32

I’ve had lots of Moggies in my 54 years of living with and owning cats.

  2. knocked down at 1 😭
  3. lived until he was 15 (Went deaf and knocked down 😭)
  4. lived until he was also 15 had to be PTS (kidney failure)
  5. lived until he was 24 (old age) still miss him
  6. Lived until she was 15, had to be PTS through ill health and incontinence
  7. lived until she was 18 had to be PTS (tumour) still miss her
  8. Very much alive and well and living a great life age 10
  9. Very much alive and well, despite being adopted with a limp and early arthritis. Age 4.
Welshgirl10 · 22/11/2025 07:43

One of my moggies sadly lived until 9 and then had stomach cancer and had to be put down. My other moggie is 10 and still going strong! We have a BSH as well who is 3 currently

SparklyGlitterballs · 22/11/2025 07:47

My black moggy girl was 16 this year and still going strong. My childhood moggies reached about 17 or 18 I believe. Less inbreeding with moggies and as long as they're kept away from dangers, they have a good chance of reaching their mid-high teens.

howrudeforme · 22/11/2025 08:11

My childhood cat was a moggie but half Siamese lived to almost 22.

The rescue older kitten I got my DS had to be put down earlier this year at just 9 years old (cancer). Ds is at uni and had do a mad dash home.

He’s still very distressed so I get your DS’s concern.

Myblueclematis · 22/11/2025 08:26

I've had six cats in total since 1977, apart from one, they've all lived to 17 and 18 although the last was difficult to tell as he was a rescue, I think he was around 15-16.

KilliMonjaro · 22/11/2025 08:46

Mine is 16. Still going strong!

DoAWheelie · 22/11/2025 08:51

My childhood cat lived to 14.

I got 3 kittens together as an adult, one died at 11 from brain cancer. The other two are 13 now. One had CKD but is doing very well with treatment, the other is in perfect health.

TroysMammy · 22/11/2025 08:59

All moggies, one was just shy of his 16th birthday, another died as a result of a rta aged 3 and Troy 2 months before his 6th birthday with hypertropic cardiomyopathy.

My parent's Siamese was 18 years old.

Myblueclematis · 22/11/2025 09:31

My friend had a cat, ordinary moggy, he was huge too, he lived to 21.

ninjahamster · 22/11/2025 09:34

Our last cat lived to 23. Our current cat is 12 and full of life.
