Just wondering as Ds1 is worried and i wanted to reassure him.

We have 2 british short hair boy cats without health issues, both are 9 years old.

Ds1 is at university and he is worried the cats will die of old age while he is away. Can i reassure him that the cats still have a good few years left? I vaguely remember someone telling me that cats live about 10 years but I think that might be pure bred cats and moggies live longer.

My moggy who died nearly 20 years ago was 17 - had epilepsy for the last 5 years, possibly caused by a brain tumour. Another cat died earlier this year, just short of 18 - hyperthyroid for several years, possibly had cancer in last couple of months (didn't want to stress her with investigations). Their sibling is now 18, scraggy, but still fit and active enough to jump on beds etc.

Our British Blue Shorthair was 11.5 when we had to have her put to sleep. Until that day she had been perfectly healthy. It was such a shock.

Andromed1 · 21/11/2025 17:17

My BSH recently died at16 having been very healthy for years.

My Maine coon lived until 21, caught her last mouse at 20. Moggies didn't last as long hit by a car and féline aids.

I think about 15 years is average. I read that 12 can be a tricky age for moggies and we did have one who died from kidney failure aged 12. We have also had a few cats live to 16 or 17. Sadly, a few others died young, including one from complications of calicivirus.

My wee ginger & white moggie had to be pts (many years ago now) at the age of 17 with kidney failure. Cried buckets, he ruled the roost over all the local cats outdoors and was real softy lap cat indoors.

FionnulaTheCooler · 21/11/2025 17:28

My last one died at 18, she was a mixed breed half persian. Kidney disease got her in the end, when she started to show symptoms it was sadly irreversible and we made the decision not to let her suffer once she stopped eating.

I also read that in humans, the weakest organ is the heart, but in cats it is the kidneys.

BestZebbie · 21/11/2025 17:35

Moggies live between 13 (minimum - 15 is more common as a lower bound) and 18, with up to 21 not unheard of. Unless they die on the road.

Pure-bred cats often have shorter lifespans, more like 10-15.

anothercortisolqueen · 21/11/2025 17:36

My cat was a moggy and she lived until she was 23

waitingforthehallmarkedman · 21/11/2025 17:53

My old girl was 21 when she died last year.

wanttokickoffbutcant · 21/11/2025 17:55

It was a kidney tumor for my boy.

I also read that in humans, the weakest organ is the heart, but in cats it is the kidneys.

It’s because of their protein heavy diet making their kidneys work very hard.

when my MIL died and my FIL went into a home, they had two cats. the one went next door, where he spent most of his time anyway, and we took the black one, Minky. we knew she was 19, and at the time we had two dogs, so we were not too sure how it would go, but they all got on fine. we thought at her age we would not have her long, but we were wrong. a few weeks ago, we had that conversation we all dread; Minky was struggling to clean herself. she was deaf and aanymore bit wobbly. we bathed her regularly, but she was not getting anything from life But she was constantly crying for food which just went straight through but the next morning we came down, and she had passed in her sleep. she was stretched out on, her cushion very happily. we were devastated,, but she was 22 years old and now her ashes are back with us

bombastix · 21/11/2025 18:54

They are funny little sods, cats. When they die, the house goes cold with them.

Ahwig · 21/11/2025 18:55

My moggies were 16 and 17 respectively. They had a great life as we live on the edge of wood so when they were playing out , they were climbing trees and chasing ( and loosing ) squirrels.

All my generic moggy type cats have lived 15-20 years.

Mine too
My GPs had a 21 year old moggy

Gettingbysomehow · 21/11/2025 19:06

Isis had radioactive iodine treatment at 15 for a very uncontrolled thyroid and she's 27 now and very fit and well.

Do you mean domestic short hair as British short hair are a pure breed.

Growing up I had 2 cats, they both lived to age 21/20 , both indoor/outdoor cats.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 21/11/2025 19:14

Our moggy lived until he was 16, but he was hit by a car and badly injured when he was a young cat so we felt really blessed he got to that age. His kidneys failed, and because it was lockdown we couldn't go in with him for him to be PTS so we kept him at home on massive doses of painkiller. He went to sleep lying in the sun on the dining room floor. Still miss the little shit, even though he was naughty right to the end.

I’ve had cats live till 14,12 ,15 and then 3 years of age .. last one stomach cancer ☹️

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/11/2025 22:27

We lost our beautiful girl (moggy) last year aged ten - she was diagnosed with aggressive stomach cancer. My littlest love, my greatest heartbreak.

I hope our lovely boy lives her life as well as his. He will be three in January.

(cat tax - our snowflake girl and our orange pest. Both big fans of scrambled eggs.)

Our cat was 24. Our vet said she was the oldest cat they had ever had at their surgery. She was a tiny little black cat called Dolly 🐈‍⬛ and my kids and her pretty much grew up together. It seemed mad that my daughter was six when we got Dolly and 30 when she died!

Oh your son is so sweet. I understand. I stayed home an extra 6 months after buying my house because my 19 year old moggy was declining and I didn’t want to leave her (she was the family cat we adopted when I was 8). She passed 2 weeks after my niece was born. I feel like she wanted us to have some happiness to deal with the grief.
