How long do non pure bred cats normally live

Just wondering as Ds1 is worried and i wanted to reassure him.

We have 2 british short hair boy cats without health issues, both are 9 years old.

Ds1 is at university and he is worried the cats will die of old age while he is away. Can i reassure him that the cats still have a good few years left? I vaguely remember someone telling me that cats live about 10 years but I think that might be pure bred cats and moggies live longer.

I honestly don’t want to be rude but do neither of you have access to Google? Because it’s not hard to find out that cats live longer than 10 years.

catontheironingboard · 21/11/2025 13:30

I’d expect a mog to last 16+ years to be honest! MIL had one who lived to 24
and all our mogs got to a good age (close to 20). (Plus, not all pedigrees have slightly shorter lifespans - some breeds are actually very long-lived compared to mogs, eg. Burmese.)

EverardDeTroyes · 21/11/2025 13:31

My oldest boy has just died aged 20. His brother lived to just shy of 16. Frankly, I'd feel cheated if a well looked after moggie did not live to at least 15 these days.

Gettingbysomehow · 21/11/2025 13:32

I've had 10 cats, two males who died at 14 with heart failure, they were moggies, all the rest lived past 20. All moggies.

indecisivewoman81 · 21/11/2025 13:34

My childhood moggies loved until they were 19 and 21.

My Persians were roughly 11 I think

WinterHangingBasket · 21/11/2025 13:42

British shorthair or Domestic Shorthair?

Expected lifespan of a healthy moggie (domestic shorthair) is 12-15 years, although a large number will live longer as evidenced by many on this thread. It is gradually increasing with enhanced veterinary care. I recall being told many years ago that the actual average is much lower though because of the number of cats that get hit by cars. 😥

British Shorthairs are potentially slightly longer lived, perhaps because they are kept indoors more and more likely to be insured so get a higher level of vet care.

My sister's cat was just a standard cat (purchased in 1999 or 2000 I can't remember as I was only a toddler). She had her up until 2016! She had to be euthanized because she had went blind and her organs were failing, my sister was absolutely heartbroken but was so grateful she lived such a long, loving life.

JinglingtoChristmas · 21/11/2025 13:44

Mine is 19 and still going well. He has had cancer in the past and is aging. I wouldn’t be putting him under any ops now. But he is happy but slower on the stairs.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 21/11/2025 13:45

I'm sceptical that moggies live any longer in most cases. We had a British Shorthair silver tabby male that lived to 15 and our British Black reached 17. Our first Maine Coon also lived to 15 but our second one died at 4 from HCM.
There is literally no way to know how long any animal will live. You could have these cats another 10 years or you might lose one next week.

Defiantlynot41 · 21/11/2025 13:53

There is an old cats thread on here somewhere with some incredible ages

late teens is perfectly normal, our last 2 died at 20 and 19, current one is 19 and a half. All 3 have/had hypothyroidism from around age 14, treated with pills from vet.

here’s wishing a long and happy life to yours

JoanThursday · 21/11/2025 13:57

Same as others have said: our childhood cats were two moggies. One lived to 20, and the other to 18.

(We had another cat that came to an untimely end in the washer/dryer at the age of 7. Let's not go there. 😢).

MissMoneyFairy · 21/11/2025 14:01

Are they pedigree British short hairs

BejewelledCat · 21/11/2025 14:04

We had 3 - one lived to 16, the others were 20 and 21.

BillieWiper · 21/11/2025 14:10

If they're a healthy weight and don't live with smokers then up to about 17/18. Though they can die at around 10-12.

It's more important they lead a happy healthy mobile life. However long it is.

Tamarastar · 21/11/2025 14:23

Our oldest much loved tabby moggie - free from the local paper!- died at 22! No major health problems in that entire time, died peacefully in her old age. (We got her when I was 8 years old!)....I think 15-18 is about usual though.

PegDope · 21/11/2025 14:40

Why is nobody paying the cat tax?????

My MILs last cat was 21 when she died. Bog standard moggy.

Mine are 12 and going strong. Cat tax paid.

Ah, I sympathise, DD was the same about our old boy when she went to uni and I worried about it. She graduated in 21 and soent another glorious 18 months cuddling him. He was half BSH and in December 22 was given a clean bill of health by the vet. On 6th Jan, I came downstairs to find him dead on the mat by the cat flap. 14 yrs, 3 months. No warning at all. Vet thought either a heart attack or stroke.

When I told DD, very seriously, whilst upeset, she just said "oh God, I thought you were going to tell me gran was dead". We adopted two rescue girls six weeks later.

The tortie moggy got to 17.

Sassylovesbooks · 21/11/2025 14:58

Our two girls were 17 and 20 years old before they passed away. They were moggies though and not pedigree.

Friendlygingercat · 21/11/2025 15:01

Cats can live into their 20s. Like humans they can suffer various life limiting complaints in older years. Cats can also get dementia, suffer fits and deteriorating eyesight. 15-18 is a good life expectancy.

Pabbel · 21/11/2025 15:03

My lovely old rescue lady is 17+ and still ok.

If they are healthy now and not overweight they should survive.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 21/11/2025 16:49

I'd consider a ten year old cat very young.

My cat is 14 and very active. My mum had cats throughout her life and all lived until mid teens and beyond.

ffhfnfnjf · 21/11/2025 16:51

We’ve had two males live to 15 and a female live to 21.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/11/2025 16:54

All of our moggies over the years, 18,19 and one reached 21.

VeryQuaintIrene · 21/11/2025 16:58

My girl is almost 21.5. She's had kidney disease for years and I assume it will get her at some point, but right now, she still enjoys her food, cuddles and a nice patch by the fire or in the sun so she doesn't seem ready to go yet,
