@HumanToCatBeasties when will you know how Boris is? I'm sorry that it's been difficult for you to get the urine specimen. I've never succeeded in getting a specimen with those crystals, not in any cat.

I'm taking the urine sample to the vets tomorrow. It's currently stashed behind the can of whipped cream in the fridge door. In a container in a bag, but still not thinking about the fact I have wee in my fridge. Weirdly this time there was no crystals, which according to nice vet isn't unusual. I think today has made it very clear that Boris needs to be drinking much more fluid and is probably permanently a bit dehydrated at the moment.

Oh no, poor Boris. How will you get him to drink more? Do you have a cat fountain? (We don't have one but I hear they can encourage drinking in some cats).

Maybe cat soup?

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 23/07/2025 22:04

Ah well, urine is sterile.

I have one cat fountain which they used to use but now ignore in favour of a large bowl of water. They really liked their previous fountain, clearly I shouldn't have bothered trying to upgrade!

HumanToCatBeasties · 23/07/2025 22:46

I did when Boris first started having urinary issues buy a cat fountain, but they weren't interested. I might have to dig it out of the attic and give it another try.

Coincidentally nice vet phoned me just as I was planning to phone the vets to query Boris's diazepam dosage, she agreed to take his dosage down to half a tablet.

I went to the Afternoon Tea Club today, and encountered four excellent cats on my way home.

First, Suzy in the car park.

@HumanToCatBeasties Poor boris

Breadcat24 · 24/07/2025 18:36

Breadcat is begging for food ALL the time. Now she has never been shy about eating but this is beyond ridiculous. Starts from 3am. Normally she has biscuits out but only eats them every now and again- she is eating every one! Every plate is clean. as a result she has put on weight and is now a bit porky. I have looked up everything I can think of. She does not get wormed because last spot on burnt her skin and her fur dropped out and she will not touch the powder in food. I went and checked in the garden (yuck) but could not see worms in her poo (sorry TMI)
It will be a vet call out if she keeps this up (we cannot take her in unless we have to as she stresses so much).
Any ideas?
Please let it not be thyroid how I would get her to take a tablet is beyond me

Allergictoironing · 24/07/2025 19:52

If it stresses her that much, when you call to make the appointment explain this and ask if you can have some Gabapentin for her. If she's eating everything at the moment, it should be quite easy (hopefully) to get her to take them crushed to a powder and mixed in with Lik E Lix or tuna - something squishy that she likes.

You give her a couple the night before, then a couple more an hour or two before you need to crate her. You will have a rather docile completely stoned cat 😆

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 24/07/2025 20:58

@Breadcat24 if it's an over-active thyroid gland, the treatment is usually liquid medication.

Two of our cats had it, and we just mixed it in with their food.

Mind you, cats usually lose weight when they're hyperthyroid...... and you say that Breadcat is gaining - so maybe it's something else?

Breadcat24 · 24/07/2025 22:10

thanks @Allergictoironing and @TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne If she does not settle down ( and it might be a stress reaction as we did go on holiday) then I will get the vet out. The mobile vets are lovely and it is £60 for a consult so not much different. Generally she seems happier with them. Just hope she is OK and being a pig.

Oh Breadcat that made me laugh so much.

BTW Grumpy I'm sure you and Mrs Grumpy would enjoy this enjoyable holiday opportunity.

Especially as you could bring your children, and you'd all earn two bob a day, and there would be no need to go on holiday.................

Only downside would be having to "bring yer ain pieces".
🤣

I can just imagine my children's joy at being taken to Scotland to pick potatoes. It might tire them out enough to stop them bickering with each other for approx 8 hours a day, though.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/07/2025 06:06

Sounds like my perfect holiday - and earning two bob a day on top. I'm sure my kids when ypunget would have been delighted 🤣🤣🤣

Yes. And don't forget the two shillings.

Well worth the hassle of getting to Scotland in the first place.

I'm glad my dad never saw that advert when we were kids. He would have totally been up for that and any moaning or crying would have been met with The Look.

Esgaroth · 25/07/2025 11:41

In the olden days here city children would genuinely be packed off to the countryside to do agricultural labour all summer. For no pay!

Nowadays teenagers do unskilled / low skilled labour for the local municipality for a pittance (weeding, mowing, painting, construction work). Mine aren't old enough for the teenager work yet but when DH was a lad he laid the paving round his local swimming pool and it's still there 😄

Sorry to hear that Breadcat and Boris are having issues. Hope they're on the mend soon.
We got back from.our holiday so are now trying to get back to the routine.
Herbie started miaowing madly as soon he heard our voices when we went to fetch him from the cattery. Then all the other cats joined in so it was a mass yowling!
He is very happy to be home.

It was very kind of Herbie to signal his delight at your return with a full cat choir. 😂
Thanks for your best wishes to Boris. He's now been given 10 days more of antibiotics after his urine test results. Luckily he's daft or greedy enough that he still comes running when I shake the Dreamies packet even though at this point he must know that tablets are coming first.

Pianoaholic · 25/07/2025 21:48

When they are greedy it can sometimes be a blessing!
Herbie never suspects the worming tablets which we just stick in his wet food.
Our last cat always knew....we would then find the spat out worming tablet!
In the end, we got the vet to administer them.when we took her for check ups.
