Cat has eaten bolognese sauce

I’ve made bolognese for tonight’s dinner, which I have had simmering away, stirring occasionally. I caught the cat up on the side having a good lick of the spoon. He can’t have had much, literally a few licks. It has an onion, a couple of garlic cloves, celery, carrots, a couple of peppers, passata, some leftover cherry tomatoes, and obviously mince.

I know garlic and onion are toxic - should I be worried?

He was swiftly removed and is now having a snooze in his bed by the radiator. (Normal afternoon routine.)

One of my cats had a preference for chicken curry. She was always fine!

InTheRainOnATrain · 19/02/2025 16:15

I knew he’d be orange! What is it with orange cats?! Mine probably has bolognaise weekly. He hovers under the chair of my youngest and has been known to even jump in the sink during clean up to lick the plates. He’s absolutely fine other than unsurprisingly, slightly overweight.

Diningtableornot · 19/02/2025 16:16

They shouldn't have garlic and onions but it would be a tiny amount. I'm sure he'll be OK but phone the vet if you are worried.

SantaToSSD · 19/02/2025 16:17

Mine get to lick our plates after every evening meal. Sorry for gross confession but nothing they have eaten from our plates has ever disagreed with them.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/02/2025 16:18

Why did no-one tell me about orange cats!?! I saw him on the CP website a few days after we had our lovely white girl pts, and thought, oh, that’s our new cat, there he is. I must have missed that memo, but yes, he’s the most orange cat there has ever been. He dances.

Allium species is chronic toxicity.

so a one off not an issue, it’s if they’re eating it regularly it’s a problem.

Dolambslikemintsauce · 19/02/2025 16:21

Dcat loves chilli con carne.. Kidney beans are his favourite!

That’s really helpful, thank you - it was just a few licks and would have been well diluted within the sauce.

He came to us just past one and had been a stray kitten, and was an awful food thief (in the compost bin and the like) initially. He turned two last month and I thought we were over that phase!

Dancing orange cat will be just fine. Cats are much better than dogs at either not eating what is bad for them in the first place, or eating it and then going to find some grass to make them regurgitate it - little charmers that they are!

I’m sure that come supper time he’ll be awake and stalking around the table for anyone foolish enough to leave their food unattended…

Also, what a handsome lad, he looks like lots of fun!

DoNoTakeNo · 19/02/2025 16:38

He's a very handsome boy!
An old cat of ours used to love Chinese takeaway, especially if it was in black bean sauce. He also had the worst chronic wind of any pet I've owned.

Appalonia · 19/02/2025 16:43

My cat would often lick the bowl if I'd made something like bolognese. Cats are very hardly animals, so I really think it will be fine! Lovely cat🐱

anothernameanotherplanet · 19/02/2025 16:44

They generally don't eat what is bad for them - and if it is either eat grass and throw up or don't eat grass and throw up.

My wife's childhood cat once ate a tub of margarine. As you'd expect it threw it all back up and was quite a job to clean up both the mess and cat.

We had a cat who'd attack the weekly shop - teeth marks/torn packaging.... bread, cheese etc.

MousePolice · 19/02/2025 16:47

I caught one of my cats eating from a pan of gently simmering bolognaise on the hob! It didn’t do her any harm.

Iamamagpie · 19/02/2025 16:48

Mine has had a bit of leftover spag bol around once a month for years now (I didn’t realise she shouldn’t eat it 😬). She does seem to have a cast iron stomach for most food & I’m sure she can hear a pack of cheese being opened from the other side of the house.

Yes - I read that allium toxicity in cats and dogs surfaced when some misguided owners regularly fed them on things like baby food jars instead of pet food or raw foods. When I first had a dog some of the treats contained garlic.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/02/2025 17:00

Another vote for don't worry about it.
Ours regularly finish off bits and pieces they snaffle that they shouldn't eat. (avocados, mince with onions & garlic, anything with cream or milk in it etc.). Never seems to do them any harm.

RaveToTheGrave1 · 19/02/2025 17:11

One of my cats scarfs any type of curry left on a plate, chili too, the hotter the better, your mog will be fine 🙂

Breadcat24 · 19/02/2025 17:51

Nice to see Louie the dancer- also apparently a chancer!

Total chancer. He licked my bacon sandwich earlier! I generally don’t mind/am resigned, I just panicked about the bolognese being toxic.

Thank you to everyone who has posted reassuring tales of cats with similarly adventurous tastes!

The typo made me smile!
They are hardy, also very hardly animals - practically human, in fact! Opposable thumbs, and they’d rule the world! 🙂

Randomease · 19/02/2025 18:16

Nah he’ll be fine. Cats don’t tend to eat things that will harm them as they’re brighter than dogs. A few licks of garlic / onion won’t harm him.

Littletreefrog · 19/02/2025 18:18

They will more than likely be fine. If it disagrees with them they will probably throw up fairly soon but other than that I wouldn't worry. My cats eats anything and everything they can get their paws on. Their favourite is a nice hot curry. The only time they have been sick from it is when one of them ate the leaves off the onions that were drying in the greenhouse. They are banned from the greenhouse now much to their disgust.

I love this!

You know that all orange cats share one braincell don't you? He's just waiting his turn.

Here's my orange dude patiently waiting for his.

I'm more concerned for your mental health after getting an orange cat than said cat after licking a tiny amount of Bolognese
