Cat has just come home with a collar on!

My cat has just come in with a collar on. She doesn't have a collar. I feel like someone is trying to claim her. What are we meant to do to signal that she has a home?

Make sure she's chipped, take that collar off and put your own one on?

AdoraBell · 04/10/2024 22:21

Definitely get her micro chipped. Try to keep her indoors until then.

PsychoHotSauce · 04/10/2024 22:22

Is she chipped?

You could put a paper collar on that says she has an owner

You could also put out a message on the local fb group explaining the same.

What a cheek. Who does that?

LouH5 · 04/10/2024 22:23

Omg I’d be furious!

I agree, remove it and put a paper collar on with a note saying she’s yours. Argh so stressful!

kirinm · 04/10/2024 22:24

I put a post on FB asking people not to feed her. She's chipped and doesn't look like a stray!

Did the new collar have a bell? Some people get cross about pet cats without belled collars on the grounds that they are more likely to successfully catch a bird. they might have been trying to protect wildlife rather than claiming the cat

It does have a bell on it. She was in here for dinner at 7pm with no collar and then just legged it in about half an hour ago with a collar on.

Keeping her own your grounds?

This. People are probably tired of her killing birds and wildlife.

AdoraBell · 04/10/2024 22:29

As she’s already chipped I would get a collar and put on it “I’m micro chipped, don’t try to claim me”

Not to mention the poo in your garden from random cats. And random cats entering your home if a door is left open.

Maybe someone testing the waters to see if she has an owner or not if she is a bit of a six dinner Sid? They might only want to claim her if she is a stray rather than steal her. I absolutely would want to steal that cheeky face madam though 😂

kirinm · 04/10/2024 22:40

She's caught a few mice (never killed them) but she's never caught a bird or anything like that.

Tbh how do you know if your cat walks around without supervision?

Namechangetotalkaboutmysleepingpillsproblem · 04/10/2024 22:43

Put your own collar on with a note on it that says Not Your Cat

Buttermill · 04/10/2024 22:44

They probably assume she is a stray cats are well known for having two homes and going where has decent food. I dont think its a claiming issue she could be going far away those poor people are thinking aww this poor stray car we will give it a home. Happens a lot just change the colour or get one with his name and address on it maybe even if its temporary.

Grabyourpassportandmyhand · 04/10/2024 22:47

Keep her in.

When I was a kid, we took in what we thought was a stray cat. She was lovely but liked to roam. She came in every evening for her dinner. We named her and had her in our house for a few years. Imagine our surprise when a neighbour happened to be in our house and exclaimed that her cat was in our house. Neighbour had also been feeding the cat and the cat lived between both houses.

If they had cared about her that much, they should have kept her in.

Cats generally don’t like to be kept in. If they wanted to be in all the time they wouldn’t go out.

StormingNorman · 04/10/2024 22:50

My cat has a collar with a tag that says microchipped on one side and my phone number on the other. Although I’m considering one of those air tag collars since she’s started going deaf.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/10/2024 22:50

@Grabyourpassportandmyhand its kind of cruel to keep some cats in. My cat would hate it.

minipie · 04/10/2024 22:52

Attach a paper note to the collar saying “I am Maisie and belong to no 16” or whatever.

If they had cared about her that much, they should have kept her in.

Totally disagree with this. A cat used to going out will be miserable if kept in - that’s why rescues always say the cats need access to outdoors. You shouldn’t feed cats that aren’t yours, if you really think it’s a stray take it the vet and check for a chip.

How is law? In some countries the law says you need to keep your cat in your grounds. Just curious.

justasking111 · 04/10/2024 22:53

Lord my cat would climb the walls if locked in. She does call in on a neighbour most days and especially likes to be there when they are gardening.

SilenceInside · 04/10/2024 22:54

@MumChp which countries are those?

Put a collar of your own on the cat!
