Cat has just come home with a collar on!

My cat has just come in with a collar on. She doesn't have a collar. I feel like someone is trying to claim her. What are we meant to do to signal that she has a home?

It’ll be because neighbours are pissed off with it and want to hear when it’s in their garden.

How is law? In some countries the law says you need to keep your cat in your grounds. Just curious.

No such law in the UK

kolalumps · 04/10/2024 22:56

Weird cat people exist … they lure your cat into their home and pretend you don’t love it. We had one of these, kept neighborhood cats in her flea ridden sooty basement. She was so horrible, you’d know you cat was there but it meant having to listen to her tell you how hungry and cold you cat was til she took him in. She’d give your cat back, black with grime and with fleas. Straight to vet for a flea bath.

she wore flea collars on her ankles

She's caught a few mice (never killed them) but she's never caught a bird or anything like that.

That you know of.

You don’t know much about your cat’s life.

Keep it in.

Maybe someone testing the waters to see if she has an owner or not if she is a bit of a six dinner Sid? They might only want to claim her if she is a stray rather than steal her. I absolutely would want to steal that cheeky face madam though 😂

I love the book Six Dinner Sid! 😊

Attach a paper note to the collar saying “I am Maisie and belong to no 16” or whatever.

If they had cared about her that much, they should have kept her in.

Totally disagree with this. A cat used to going out will be miserable if kept in - that’s why rescues always say the cats need access to outdoors. You shouldn’t feed cats that aren’t yours, if you really think it’s a stray take it the vet and check for a chip.

Responsible owners build cat runs and cover their gardens so the cats can’t excape.. That way they are outside but contained without bothering anyone else.

If the owners don’t want others to feed (or even harm) their cats, they must look after them properly and stop using the excuse that cats are independent/entitled by law to
roam etc because its the easiness of cats being so low maintenance that results in there being so many of them in shelters, harmed, roadkill.

I don't hate cats. We have two. They are not allowed to roam.

user27241775 · 04/10/2024 23:01

It sounds like your cat has done a great job of persuading another mug that it is starving and neglected and such a poor little kitty that it needs its second breakfast of the day NOW. Probably before hot-footing it back to its original servants for an early lunch. Excellent catwork.

SilenceInside · 04/10/2024 23:02

Do people in the UK really build cat runs and cover their whole garden in order to keep their cats on their own property?? I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that.

Regardless, the law in the UK is that cats are allowed to roam. It's not irresponsible to allow cats out.

The next 5 houses from ours all have cars (next door have 4 and the house next to theirs also have 4) and nobody has a cat run.

Yes they do!

But they are people who genuinely put effort and time into caring for their pets. They don’t have cats because they are ‘easy’ pets requiring minimum care.

Tbh how do you know if your cat walks around without supervision?

All cats go around without supervision.

Not true.

Musclebeach · 04/10/2024 23:09

This happened to our cat once. Cheeky thing had been flirting with the family down the road so much they thought he was a stray. The collar had their number on so I was able to locate them and reclaim him. Was sorely tempted not to bother and let them keep him!

I do! I have a “catio” that is nearly the entire size of my garden. It’s not that common, but there are a lot of people that do. After having a cat killed by a car I would always opt for catio.

@SilenceInside Yep, my entire garden is cat proofed. I see it as responsible ownership. Many things are not illegal but not safe either. If you look up the life expectancy of an indoor vs outdoor cat it’s pretty shocking.

This. People are probably tired of her killing birds and wildlife.

Cats have a legal right to roam. If birds are taken out it is nature.

TeenLifeMum · 04/10/2024 23:33

Our local fb is nuts with people posting photos of lovely, healthy cats in their gardens worried because they visit daily and think maybe they are stray. No Mavis, you gave it chicken once and now she’s visiting in the hope you will give her more before going home to her actual family and eating again!

And if cat’s poo in other people’s gardens, it’s nature too.

Beats me why we don’t all squat down wherever and whenever we feel the urge. It is nature after all.

purpleme12 · 04/10/2024 23:35

Wow that would make me really on edge to find someone had put a collar on my cat!!!

But is it Mavis' fault or your own for letting cat roam in Mavis' garden?

😂😂😂 cats can roam, doesn’t mean you should feed them.
