My cat is inside my neighbour’s wall cavity

So, we’re presently a wrecking ball of anxiety and sadness as my kids and I wait to find out if we’ll ever hold our cat again.

He went out, two nights ago, at 2am. I’d been up preparing for a hearing (divorce). He was sitting at the back door, always an indication that he needs to go out. He’s out every night and home by 7am, sleeping on a patio chair.

He didn’t come home. Didn’t think much of it. Attended hearing (5 hours) and around 2pm asked my kids if they’d seen Gus. They hadn’t. DD had mentioned that she was aware that he hadn’t come to her room for daily snoozy snuggles.

I put out an alert on neighborhood watch and it turns out, he’d wandered into my neighbour’s house and looked utterly terrified to be there. She sent photos her painter had taken of my cat (homeowner was at work). They are having building works. Apparently he was hiding underneath a table, the painter tried to coax him out and grabbed him. The cat got totally spooked and they are pretty sure he ran into an opening of a newly built/plastered basement wall and climbed inside the cavity, they ‘think’. Their last sighting of him was in the wall’s opening climbing an electric cable. It’s all so grim.

I’ve gone over with food, talking to him, tapping, calling for him, chatting to him. I can see into the wall’s cavity. It’s an incredibly tight squeeze and this immediately scared me. The space is limited and the neighbour’s father in law built the wall and explained that the cat wouldn’t have much space to explore as it’s very limited and extremely tight.

There’s been no sound. Nothing. I heard nothing. Nobody’s heard a thing. Food has gone untouched. Fire Brigade has visited twice with thermal cameras and they’ve detected nothing both times (the space however is full of beams, cables, and insulation which could inhibit detection). RSPCA said I’ve basically done all that I can.

What more can be done? What’s crazy is he’s such a timid cat. None of the neighbours really know him because, although he wanders, he’s not the Six Dinner Sid our ginger cat is, visiting all and sundry like relatives at Christmas. Our little timid boy isn’t like that. He is extremely shy of humans. He looked absolutely terrified in the photos the painter shared. I hate to think the worst.

But what now, 38 hours on? 😢

I hope Gus is home soon, but I just wanted to tell you about my partner's cat that went missing last year. I can't remember whether he was gone for eight or ten days, I think it was ten. We honestly thought he must be dead somewhere, and were so upset about it - he's a very sweet cat, and much loved. My partner has one of those big metal containers in his garden .... not something he goes in very often. He happened to be standing by it one afternoon and heard meowing. He couldn't believe his eyes when he opened the doors and Ceefer walked out! He had put an item in the container ten days before, and Ceefer must have followed him in unnoticed. Yes, alive after ten days with nothing to eat, and unless the walls got condensation on, absolutely nothing to drink. He was a bit thinner than when we last saw him, and absolutely ravenous. We fed him, then he fell asleep on the sofa. He was quiet for a couple of days, and didn't want to go out, but was then back to normal. Don't give up on Gus, he could easily go this long without food and water - if indeed he's even in the cavity! Good luck x

Awww glad you found your cat!
Hopefully Gus will turn up soon, bless

We've had bats and a squirrel in our wall cavity and it is a very tight space indeed.

He can't have got far, like a squirrel, surely? But on the off chance he could squeeze and climb, is he in the loft? That's where the squirrel got into ours.

Oopstoo · 21/08/2024 19:54
That's how we enticed a hamster out of a tight space, by putting the other hamster in a cage near where he got in.

CherryCake88 · 23/08/2024 23:05

Hey OP, just wanted to check in to see if you’d found Gus yet?
broke my heart reading this! 💔

foxyariel · 24/08/2024 10:33

Here for an update too, even if it's ''no news yet". Let us know how you are doing, OP. I hope you are reunited with Gus soon.

timetorefresh · 24/08/2024 10:57

I hope he comes home soon!

Iwantascone · 24/08/2024 11:19

I'm surprised the OP hasn't updated after posters showing concern for her cat.

OssieShowman · 24/08/2024 11:28

Could cat have got into the ceiling by this space?

Hot cooked smelly chicken if leaving food out.
I am hoping for a good outcome

Yes, me too. Maybe it was just made up. ☹️

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 25/08/2024 09:33

Oh my heavens! All of the MN love! THANK YOU!! All of you. Thank you SO MUCH!!
I'm coming back to this thread to finally update you all... and to apologise, sincerely for not updating until now.
I wish I could reply to each and every single one of you individually. So please, please, please accept my collective (and enormous!) thank you and MN hugs for hand holding and for all of the advice and unwavering support. Thank you!!

HE CAME HOME! Honestly, we're exhausted. Underslept, overcried, just so tired! We haven't been sleeping or even eating properly. So forgive me for being slow to reply. My little search party is exhaling with such relief!! We're still clinging onto our boy like he's our very own Christmas Miracle (in August)!!

The neighbour, whose wall he was inside of, said, "You really need to broaden your search because I don't think he's in my wall or my house."
So we sent out flyers, re-flooded our local whatsapp groups, walked around the roads and alleyways looking for him (even at midnight, we were out looking for him). No joy whatsoever.
I got a lovely email from the fire brigade saying, after two thorough checks, there wasn't much more they could do. So, on the one hand, we were so relieved to think, "Ok, he's probably not inside the wall." But on the other hand, there was that sinking feeling of, "Where is he? If he's free from the wall, why didn't he come straight home?"
And then... He came rolling home at 6am yesterday! DD came running into my bedroom to say she could hear him meowing outside (furiously! He had SO much to say!). And there he was, at the back door. He came flying into the house, looking very thin and a quite strung out. He was so vocal. He had so much to tell us. He was really unsettled when he first came home, antsy, nervous, couldn't stop roaming the house, exploring, sniffing everywhere, as if it was his first time inside his own home.
Later on in the morning, around 8 or 9am, my neighbour (with the wall) sent a video of him (she'd set up a camera in the basement where the wall is) roaming around the room a few hours before he came home. She said the video captured him at 1:30am. "He's come out of the wall!" She wrote. The video doesn't show him coming out of the wall, but he is skulking around the basement room, looking anxious, skittish, and a bit, "Where the heck am I?".

She must have opened her back door when she woke up in the morning and at some point, he quietly slipped out without her knowing. She said she'd never actually seen him in person the entire time. So, she's had this cat in her wall, who came into her house, then left a few days later without being seen by her in the flesh. I feel so badly because this is the first time I've met this neighbour (she's recently moved in) and she's met this totally falling apart, bedraggled cat lady who can't function without her tuxedo. I'd been trying so hard not to be demanding, very aware that this is her home, I can't just barge in- even though my cat's in her wall. I couldn't just go in and invade her space. But oh god, how I wanted to! It's a terrible feeling, looking across at her fence at 4am, knowing the cat's inside her wall, and there is absolutely nothing to be done about it. Such a powerless and helpless feeling.
So I have taken an oath!
If anyone's cat is ever suspected of being inside my wall, I will tear it down. That is my oath to cat people everywhere! There will be no 'wait and see'. That is my promise to my feline loving friends.

So it is SUCH a happy ending... although, every hair on my head has turned white. I swear, at an age when I cannot afford to age even more, every jowl on my face has just jowled even more. I need to scoop my jowls off the ground! But he's worth it. We can't stop snuggling him. And he is super snuggly! It's like he's stored up his snuggle supply while stuck behind that wall. My kids are totally done with my 'Mr. Gorbachev. Tear down this wall!' references, which was the only joke keeping me going.

THANK YOU, with all of my heart, my loving army of MNers, for all of the support and love for Gus!! The obligatory cat photo has been added!

fantastic news and lovely pic!

Thank you so much! That's one of the last photos I took of him before 'the wall'. His new portrait shows off his new GPS tracking system. 😆
It's funny because a couple of weeks ago, my eldest (22) came home to visit and was saying, "Wouldn't it be funny to track Gus and see what he gets up to?" And now we're in this frantic state of, "Oh my god, we need to track Gus to see what he gets up to!"

My biggest fear was that the builder was going to come back and plaster up that opening of the wall where Gus got in.

This is one of my favourites. He had just finished meowing or yawning... doing something totally 'normal', but I caught him looking like an anime/Studio Ghibli cat. His little expression. 😻

Ok. I'll stop! 😆
We've just gone from feeling so desperate and hopeless to having this wonderful sense of 'pinch me' disbelief that he's actually home and safe... and not at all dusty! I expected him to be wrapped in insulation and cobwebs. I'm secretly disappointed that I'm not lovingly brushing the trauma from his coat.

We're still a bit confused as to how he got out of our neighbour's house at around 6am without her ever seeing him. She must have just gotten up really early, opened the back door and he did a runner as soon as he realised he could.
It's strange having your cat stuck in someone's home, well, inside their wall, for days, and that person hasn't even seen your cat once, apart from photos. It creates this sort of unreality/illusion. And the neighbour was so kind and as helpful as she could be, but she definitely couldn't feel our urgency. I really think that's because she'd not actually seen or heard our cat once inside her home. Just her painter's photo and my 'missing cat' one on whatsapp. Surreal!
