What was this breed of cat?

We went to view a house. They had two cats. They were the most beautiful cats in the world according to my son. He no longer wants the ragdolls we were planning on once we settle, even though we have been planning on them for several years. He would like these. He wanted us to buy the house to get them, but we explained that the people will want to take the cats! How cats are family! Cross with myself that I did not ask about the breed when we viewed because they were so lovely and we all admired them.

They are kind of like British short hairs, but huge. The biggest cats I have ever seen. One was ginger and white striped, one was kind of tortoisy (he was partly buried in blanket so we couldn't see that well). The ginger one was so friendly and invited strokes. The owner said they were not the brightest and to be careful with doors when going in and out in case they escaped as he feared they would be hurt or lost.

Any suggestions as to what breed they might be?

Can you contact their slaves (aka people in the house)and ask them?

Pudmyboy · 05/04/2023 21:36

Good luck btw, they sound gorgeous!

Feliciacat · 05/04/2023 21:40

Could they be Maine Coons or Norwegian Forest cats? Norwegian Forest cat Maine Coon

Keetso?

Sodie · 05/04/2023 21:47

Possibly Norwegian Forest. I have two ragdolls, an all white Norwegian and a sphynx. When our sofa was delivered the man was so taken with the Norwegian, he asked how much I wanted for him and was taking photos of him. He is absolutely beautiful and out of the three breeds I have, the Norwegian is the one I would recommend. He isn't in your face like the sphynx, I would compare the sphynx to babysitting someones very naughty toddler for free absolutely relentless.

how funny but we one had a similar thing years ago when we viewed a house with our son but we did ask the homeowner and she said he was a Maine Coon-gorgeous! I wonder if it's the same lady with a new generation of cats? 😋

HappyMe6 · 05/04/2023 21:49

long haired or shorthaired op

custardbear · 05/04/2023 21:49

Tortoiseshell are female cats almost always.
Are you sure they just weren't BSH mogs?

QuintanaRoo · 05/04/2023 21:49

Some BSH are huge. The mum of my BSH was spaniel sized

j81 · 05/04/2023 21:50

Maine coons are beautiful cats

HappyMe6 · 05/04/2023 21:51

Sorry just seen you said kinda like British shorthairs I own British shorthairs they are big cats

custardbear · 05/04/2023 21:51

Maine coon are massive
Cats and Norwegian Forest cats also big, they're ferocious too though, could easily take down a T-Rex

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 05/04/2023 22:08

@Sodie bengals are the same. No off switch.

Dh used to say he was more work than his nephew as a baby.

CurlewKate · 05/04/2023 22:09

This is really boring of me- but why not just get cats? There are loads of cats looking for homes. And cats that can live normal cat lives and haven't been so inbred that they can't. Sorry.

I would like to but dp says it is rude as we don't want the house. Just the cats!

Yes. We looked into adoption but there is too much faff about how your garden has to be and children etc. So we will not be doing that. We will keep the cats inside, we plan on two, we will wait until the baby is a bit older so I have the capacity to manage kittens, we have had cats previously, so they will be grand, but actually adoption is very complicated.

Maybe they are British short hairs. I just did not think they were so big. I had one years ago, but it ran out on the road and got knocked down at just a year old. So she was nothing like the size of these, but maybe it was just her age.

They sound a bit scary! We are looking for cats that can live with children so ferocious is not an appealing characteristic 😂

Turkish Angoras?

GerundTheBehemoth · 06/04/2023 06:35

Big chunky short-haired cats that look like British shorthairs... sounds like British shorthairs! They can have any of the standard coat colours.

MrsRickAstley · 06/04/2023 06:46

There's no faff with adoption. Don't be short sighted.

Depends on the company. One near us wouldn't even entertain our request to adopt as we were within a certain distance of a road. Despite having a farm and fields to 3 other sides.
The other we tried just asked how many we could take and let us walk out.

We have done both. Adoption and specific breed kittens and both were right for us at that time.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/04/2023 07:51

Exotic short haired? Some can be quite big. Though mine is tiny!
