What was this breed of cat?

We went to view a house. They had two cats. They were the most beautiful cats in the world according to my son. He no longer wants the ragdolls we were planning on once we settle, even though we have been planning on them for several years. He would like these. He wanted us to buy the house to get them, but we explained that the people will want to take the cats! How cats are family! Cross with myself that I did not ask about the breed when we viewed because they were so lovely and we all admired them.

They are kind of like British short hairs, but huge. The biggest cats I have ever seen. One was ginger and white striped, one was kind of tortoisy (he was partly buried in blanket so we couldn't see that well). The ginger one was so friendly and invited strokes. The owner said they were not the brightest and to be careful with doors when going in and out in case they escaped as he feared they would be hurt or lost.

Any suggestions as to what breed they might be?

Why don't you just ask the vendor? If the house isn't for you that's fine - just say something friendly about why it won't work for you. But ask about the cats - most people are glad to talk about their pets and maybe you can also find out who the breeder is.

listsandbudgets · 06/04/2023 08:06

Make an offer conditional on them throwing in the cats.. e.g. we are offering asking price but would lime you to include the clcurtilains, bathroom cupboard and both cats

Curtains!

They sound a bit scary! We are looking for cats that can live with children so ferocious is not an appealing characteristic 😂

@Snugglemonkey and rehoming the TRex coukd be difficult.

workinprog · 06/04/2023 08:12

We're selling our house and two viewers asked the estate agents what breed our cats are (a big Maine coon and tiny British shorthair). We found it funny. We love our cats and it's nice to hear they've been trying to charm viewers.

There's no faff with adoption. Don't be short sighted.

There definitely can be!! Don't be so daft.

workinprog · 06/04/2023 08:14

Oh and it's also reassuring to know that some viewers aren't put off by cats in the house!

Oh there definitely is. We adopted our (now elderly) cats when they were little and we were told we couldn't be at work all day, had to promise that we'd come home at lunch or wfh so they didn't get lonely, promise them that we were going to get a cat flap put in our sliding glass patio door before they'd even contemplate letting us have them.
We're about to get a new kitten and looked in to adopting again. But now we have the added complication of an existing cat in the house and a small child (plus still no cat flap, and occasionally will be out of the house all day with pesky work...) we are pretty much considered unsuitable.

So we're getting one privately.

CurlewKate · 06/04/2023 08:22

@Snugglemonkey Adoption centres do need to make sure you can provide a suitable home. Would you rather they didn't care? Much easier to go through this procedure than the much harder task of making sure that the breeder you choose is ethical. Many, many are not, however they may look on the surface.

We were turned down last year because they didn't like next doors fencing and my son was 5.

I do appreciate that, but I think some of their criteria are nonsense. Tried once, now would not again. Yet we have had both cats and dogs in a perfectly suitable home.

Oh no cat flap was one of the criticisms of us, but I would not let a cat out without supervision so have no intention of ever having a cat flap.

I don't think anyone's saying they shouldn't do basic checks, but the criteria are often so strict that it's impossible for anyone who isn't home all day with no children or other animals to adopt.

headache · 06/04/2023 09:12

I would contact the people on the house and ask them, cat people are a bit bonkers they will love talking about their cats and may even recommend a breeder.

FWIW I have four rescue cats, we did get them all as kittens, first two then then other two one at at time, we got kittens as we have a big dog and we thought kittens would adapt easier to a dog. Then the other cats would adapt easier to a kitten. Some of the kittens have a really hard start in life, being born outside, Mum dying because she was a four month kitten herself. They are from a little local rescue and they are all indoor cats.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/04/2023 09:24

I completely agree that adoption centres need to be careful. But some do have overly strict rules. Surely a cat would be better in a home with a five year old, who's already used to cats. Than languishing in a pen.can't see the issue with a cat flap either. The cats would just demand there servant open the door.

You would imagine so. It is a shame for the cats. I would happily go for a rescue cat and think we are well placed to look after one. I work part time and we both work from home, so plenty of company and we understand what is involved with kittens.

Here is grumpy cat. She’s a British long hair.

And my Birman Have to say Birmans are my favourite breed, maybe I got lucky with mine but he’s so affectionate, like a little dog and a total character. Very clever.

We had 2 huge black moggies with white bibs, our neighbours called them The Management (for anyone that remembers Hale and Pace)

Kittybelle123 · 06/04/2023 21:27

@QuintanaRoo my Birman was absolutely the same. I miss him every single day. Please give yours an extra hug from a Birman loving Kitty mummy x

oviraptor21 · 06/04/2023 21:28

Adoption is definitely a challenge - so many hoops to jump through.

I know you said short hair OP but just wanted to correct an earlier poster who said Norwegians are ferocious. Completely untrue. They're the most affectionate friendly cats ever.

RandomMess · 06/04/2023 21:29

They could be Exotic breed, related to Persians.

She has a permanent scowl…..she’s the most serious cat ever. She doesn’t scratch or anything and she likes sitting on dh but she is very much a cat who likes to keep her distance a bit. Especially from me, I think because I have a clingy dog attached to me most of the time and she’s suspicious of the dog.
