Neighbour leaving young cat outside at night in this weather.

My neighbour (who is a feckless idiot) has an old cat who he leaves outside every night whatever the weather. Neighbour lives between his and partners house and when he is there (for 1-2 days at a time) the cat is outside. No cat flap. A rudimentary shelter with no blankets and a bowl of food (that gets eaten by other cats on street). The cat miaows loudly all night outside the door.

I've tried speaking to him about the older cat but he was unreceptive saying it was the cats preference.

He has now acquired a gorgeous kitten who is about 6 months old and he's doing the same to him, he's been outside all night every night this week and has been crying outside their front door every morning when I leave for work.

From what I can gather RSPCA won't do anything unless there is abject cruelty going on which I don't think they would classify this as.

Is there anything I can do? Talking to him won't change anything.

I even thought about "liberating" the older cat to a rescue last year but apparently (and surprisingly) he has him chipped. The older cat has adapted more to being outside and when I let him come into my house last year he wouldn't settle and was covered in fleas (I treated him but they came back in a few weeks)

I would take the little one in if I didn't work out of the house everyday.

Is there anything I can do?

Pic attached of him this morning trying to come with me 😻

Isn't he gorgeous @CatChant ? I'm quite besotted 😻

@EmmaEmerald Neighbour has the impulse control of a toddler. In the 6 years I've lived here he's had (and got rid of) multiple cats (inc a pair of kittens that got lost and he literally looked for them for one day and then moved on), a snake and a pair of guinea pigs. He currently has a beautiful young Australian shepherd who is woefully underexercised and understimulated and who has had zero socialisation.

That pad looks ace @MyOldFriendTime .

Wow, I wish he could be banned from owning pets.hopefully the kittens found an alternative home.

Headstones250 · 08/02/2023 18:21

I have a conservatory with an old cat flap into it which I let my neighbour's cat use (they lock the poor cat outside in all weathers when they're at work). It works well as the cat has shelter and a dry and comfortable place to sleep, but can't access the rest of the house because the door into the main house is shut unless we're at home. I've never discussed it with either the cat or the neighbours. I just turn a blind eye to it!

Headstones "I've never discussed it with either the cat or the neighbours"

I'd love to hear the cat discussion.

Headstones: how are you finding the cat flap, is it okay?
cat: mrrp
Headstones: you know we don't lock it or anything, you can use it whenever you like
cat: mrrp
headstones: do you think it needs a coat of paint?
cat: mrrp

This shit makes me sad. Why have animals when you have zero interest or intention of looking after them 🤬

TheBalletCats · 11/02/2023 11:19

Am so pleased you’re minding the cats OP, given the human claiming to own them shows them no care. The wee cat looks so blissfully happy with you 😻

Nobody here is ever ok with feeding other people’s cats, much less active cat-theft type shenanigans. In circumstances like this, though? We’d all be swearing blind that your neighbour is trying to steal your wee cat & even managed to get it chipped to him - all because he thinks the elderly cat he cruelly keeps outside needs a friend & because he’s angry you’ve given said Senior Feline somewhere safe & warm to sleep & a reliable & adequate supply of food & water. This being the man who got & got shot of a pair of kittens on the same day, mark you. I mean, just look around - who does it LOOK as if the wee dote belongs too? (Etc etc, much outrage.)

Clarich007 · 11/02/2023 12:40

Thank god for people like you OP.
Warms my heart to see it. The cat is gorgeous and looks very happy with you..
As for your twat of a neighbour....
Why have multiple animals and not look after them. Words fail me.
Keep up the good work. 😻

Ooh! What has been happening? Clearly good things for little cat!

Forever42 · 16/07/2023 02:15

Aw, looks like he's found a new human slave.

Nomoreheroics · 16/07/2023 04:41

I had a neighbour who had two cats that they left outside night and day. They were very thin and underfed too. Eventually one of the cats was taken by a nearby business down the road. The other one was run over. Some people should be banned from having cats for life.

UnwantedOpinionBelow · 16/07/2023 05:23

Bless you for looking after this kitty x

Mia184 · 16/07/2023 06:05

Wonderful update! How is the older cat doing?

AreolaGrande · 07/08/2023 06:48

A really shit update to my thread:

I found little cat outside my house last night when taking Ddog for her pre-bed wee.

He was laid on the pavement struggling to breathe, his tongue was all swollen and hanging out of his mouth and was making jerky movements. Got him wrapped in a blanket and in the car but he died before we even got to the vets. His breathing was so slow and laboured I knew he wasn't going to make it.

Vet said he was more than likely hit by a car on the main road and tried to make it home. One of his back legs and hip were completely broken and they said he had trauma injuries to his body which would fit with a car.

I'm fucking devastated. I really loved that little cat. Am getting ready for work and sobbing my makeup off.

Cuddle your furry friends for me this morning please.

Rest in peace little Ronnie.

Oh sweetheart I'm so sorry. 💔xx

MuttsNutts · 07/08/2023 07:02

Oh I am so sorry 💐

Not seen your thread until this morning and what a sad ending. You did your absolute best for little Ronnie and without you in his life he would have known none of the kindness, comfort and love that you showed him.

Nomoreheroics · 07/08/2023 07:04

On how absolutely awful. I’m so sorry. ❤️❤️

FedUpMumof10YO · 07/08/2023 07:06

Ahhh he looks just like my boy.

I would definitely let them in.

FedUpMumof10YO · 07/08/2023 07:19

Oh gosh sorry only just seen your update.

I'm so sorry 💔

AreolaGrande · 07/08/2023 08:07

This is him just a few days ago (on the blanket I wrapped him in last night).

He was so happy and so loved.

OP, I am so very sorry.

He was your cat. Everything good in his life came from you.

Be kind to yourself.

Plump82 · 07/08/2023 10:55

You gave him a wonderful life and he knew a home to try and get back to. No words will make it easier for you but know he loved you as much as you loved him.

Motheroftwofeline · 07/08/2023 12:57

I’m so sorry to read this 😭 you did everything you possibly could for him and more. ❤️

AreolaGrande · 07/08/2023 14:15

Thank you everyone. Your words are so lovely and helpful. I'm so grateful that he wasn't alone when he passed away and I'm grateful that I got to have him in my life for this long. He helped my mental health more than I could ever describe.

Am on my way home from work a bit early at the order of my manager. Exhausted and my head is banging.

He was such a cuddlebug.
