Neighbour leaving young cat outside at night in this weather.

My neighbour (who is a feckless idiot) has an old cat who he leaves outside every night whatever the weather. Neighbour lives between his and partners house and when he is there (for 1-2 days at a time) the cat is outside. No cat flap. A rudimentary shelter with no blankets and a bowl of food (that gets eaten by other cats on street). The cat miaows loudly all night outside the door.

I've tried speaking to him about the older cat but he was unreceptive saying it was the cats preference.

He has now acquired a gorgeous kitten who is about 6 months old and he's doing the same to him, he's been outside all night every night this week and has been crying outside their front door every morning when I leave for work.

From what I can gather RSPCA won't do anything unless there is abject cruelty going on which I don't think they would classify this as.

Is there anything I can do? Talking to him won't change anything.

I even thought about "liberating" the older cat to a rescue last year but apparently (and surprisingly) he has him chipped. The older cat has adapted more to being outside and when I let him come into my house last year he wouldn't settle and was covered in fleas (I treated him but they came back in a few weeks)

I would take the little one in if I didn't work out of the house everyday.

Is there anything I can do?

Pic attached of him this morning trying to come with me 😻

What a lovely cat. I am glad he has you and your nice neighbour to look after him. I wish I could shut the arsehole who owns him outside all night to learn to be an outdoor human.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/12/2022 18:20

Oh my god even farm cats have a barn to sleep in! What a bastard trying to do that to him.

My mum nicked a cat owned by people the rspca banned from keeping animals, she had zero regrets.

Icequeen01 · 24/12/2022 07:54

You sound very kind Op and I would be doing exactly the same as you. Can I ask, and sorry if I've missed it, but what has happened to the older cat?

AreolaGrande · 12/01/2023 21:58

Another wee photo update for you 😻 I've never met a cuddlier or more friendly cat.

Older cat is doing ok. He's sleeping in the shelter and I'm making sure he has food. He shows no interest in coming inside mine. Think he's adapted to living that way tbh.

Ahhh he’s so lovely Op. hopefully he’ll sort of just become your cat?!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 12/01/2023 22:11

Report the fecker and keep reporting.

I'd bring the kitten into my house at night and feed it too.

Well done your mum!

FrostyBits · 12/01/2023 22:18

What a cutie!

mac1974 · 12/01/2023 22:27

What a gorgeous cat. I predict they will be a permanent house cat soon enough. Well done

mrsfollowill · 12/01/2023 22:38

Oh he is lovely! I'm not even a 'cat person' but he looks so content and cosy. how lucky he is you are around. His 'owner' is a twat but I think that cat has a new home now Flowers

Ludo19 · 12/01/2023 22:38

I'm never an advocate for folk poaching other peoples pets but you're doing the right thing here OP. It's obvious his owner doesn't give two hoots about him. I'm glad he has you.

CPL593H · 12/01/2023 22:42

That is a happy cat!

rookiemere · 12/01/2023 22:50

Why on earth would someone get an " outdoor cat " . I can just about see the point if they lived on a farm and had a mouse problem, but not in town.
Thank goodness you and other neighbour are there.

AmandaHoldensLips · 12/01/2023 23:05

Gorgeous kitty!

userxx · 12/01/2023 23:10

Awwwww, he must stay with you from now on.

Your neighbour sounds like a prize cock.

EL8888 · 12/01/2023 23:22

He’s too cute, welcome to car ownership. I love ginger cats! Your neighbour sounds like a total bell end

AuntieJoyce · 13/01/2023 07:09

I just keep him in now. And make sure that he is staring at the window whenever the neighbour goes to work

Well done your mum!

Thanks 😃 the neighbours tried to get him back when they moved and he ran down our garden and hid. Bastards.

Last week my neighbour asked me, slightly narkily, if I was feeding his cats. I said yep, someone had to as he had just been gone for 72 hours leaving them outside. He claimed he leaves them enough food (one small shallow bowl of food which was being rained on last time I looked) and that he can't be around more as he has "shit to do". I just told him I don't mind making sure they have food water etc and smiled sweetly.

Meanwhile.......🤣

Elder cat has put on weight and his coat is looking much healthier. He comes in and chills in my kitchen most days for a while but never settles. He's sleeping quite happily in the shelter that my lovely neighbour built for them.

Good work @CPL593H

If you had a chat with a local cat charity I bet they'd help you out with a cat flap.

Your nice neighbour might even fit it for you.

EmmaEmerald · 08/02/2023 15:12

What a lovely cat

why does this arsehole even want cats?

and how did he even notice you'd been feeding them?

CatChant · 08/02/2023 16:46

He is such a beautiful cat and looks so content. Good to hear life is easier for the older moggy too. They are lucky to have you and the nice neighbour.

I really hope your horrible neighbour doesn’t spoil it for them.

MyOldFriendTime · 08/02/2023 17:13

Well done OP. Poor kitties.

Can I recommend this heat pad for anyone else with an outdoor animal they are concerned about. You pop it in the microwave for 5 mins and it keeps warm for about 10 hours. It is quite hard but ideal for putting in with straw to soften it up a bit.
