My Cat has been missing 2 days - Any more ideas on what I can do?

I'm a complete mess, my cat went missing very early hours of Friday morning. She must have gone out of the cat flap and for some reason didn't do her usual jump on my bed on her return, instead, she just hasn't returned.

She's 7 and when she was 2 used to go AWOL at times but since then has been a real homey cat and never goes far, hence me not locking the cat flap on Thursday night (which I feel so guilty about).

I've put her details all over Facebook, local groups and lost and found groups too. Put out some posters, been out early this morning and called for her and told everyone in my street to look in their sheds etc. Now I've run out of ideas and feel so useless not doing anything that might help bring her back.

She's been my one constant companion the past few years and I'm a wreck without her (I live on my own) and guess I'm just clutching at straws in case anyone has any ideas of what I can do, or even some hope that she will return soon. Thank you x

Thank you all so much, this is such a horrid upsetting time and it’s so helpful everything you’re suggesting. It’s good to hear of your cats coming home too, it gives me hope.

We have a WhatsApp group for my road and I’ve notified everyone that is on there, tomorrow I will knock on the doors of those not in the group. I’ve hung one of her blankets on the washing line as well.

I don’t live on a busy street but will put a poster in my car window. I’ll give the local rescue centres a call tomorrow too, thank you 😊

@Glumbums yes, there is a field and farm just across the road and also a few wooded areas, I’ll walk down there again tomorrow.

Thank you all again so much

I hope you get some good news soon x

Early days, keep positive, keep active on local social media. My cat went missing for 15 nights - had got into a delivery van and was eventually found via social media at a local school about 2 miles away. Have a word with your postman - mine spread the word and kept an eye out . Here are some other ideas to try too :

Go down there with some treats calling their name. They could have gone exploring and got a bit lost.

@gottachangeforthisone 😁 I’ll never forget mine disappearing and then the chap of the letterbox, swanning in shouting for food. I remember the haulage company calling me after the vet and you could he shouts for food on the phone.

@PushkaMcgee any news?

one of ours recently swanned off for 7 nights. We posted on local Facebook, put postersvand and she was finally seen eating someone else's cats food, about a mile away. We went shed called her in the dark with no luck, but she then was home for breakfast. such a relief

Cats often get trapped in places, or chased and then go further away than they are used to. Injured cats will crawl under things and hide, so pace roads with this in mind, and ask people to check their gardens as well as obvious things like sheds and garages. My friend’s cat was found trapped on a windowsill, really high up, in a house two streets away. The owners had no idea how she had got there !
Put Posters and leaflets over a wider area than you might think. Call all vets within five miles.
Horrible and I don’t mean to make you even more worried, but ask road cleaners, as they do pick up cats that have been killed. Thankfully most of the missing cats I have known, including my own, have come home.
Social media, eg Facebook and Twitter can be very helpful .
Good luck OP, I hope you are reunited soon.

Stormyscratchywindows · 14/11/2022 16:51

Oh sending lots of love and hope she turns up soon. Sounds like you're doing all the right things. Do you have the Next Door app? Someone might have posted on there too.

PushkaMcgee · 14/11/2022 20:24

Thank you all again for your kind messages, still no sign of my cat sadly. I am so upset and close to tears the whole time, something only other cat lovers can really understand.

I've knocked on lots of doors, handed out loads of flyers and everyone I've spoken to have been lovely and helpful learning from people nearby what my cat's territory appears to be.

@Stormyscratchywindows thank you. My daughter has put this in the Nextdoor app.
I will contact the council/road cleaners, a horrid call to make but I guess I'd rather know that be worrying the whole time.

Huge thanks to you all for your messages, it really is helping, I just hope she's home very soon x

my little guy went missing for 3 weeks once so I know what you’re going through and it’s so horrible! I know of cats who have disappeared for months, and even one that was gone for years before he rocked up like nothing had happened so try to stay hopeful as hard as it is.

As others have said gonna suggest emptying the contents of the hoover out. I poured mine into a pillow case and hung out on the washing line, and he did come back within 48 hours of doing that. From the state of his paws and claws it seemed likely he was locked in somewhere. He was ravenous as well. So ask people to double check sheds garages etc.

gettingolderbutcooler · 14/11/2022 20:35

Check local vet pages on FB?
Hope you find him xx

gettingolderbutcooler · 14/11/2022 20:38

She- sorry 😔

PushkaMcgee · 14/11/2022 21:56

@SusGus that's a good idea to put the vacuum contents in a pillow case, thank you.

@PushkaMcgee Any news yet on your beautiful cat? Don't give up.

PushkaMcgee · 15/11/2022 19:10

@Blowyourowntrumpet no, still nothing 😥thank you for asking. I’m trying hard to stay positive but it’s upsetting me so much. I keep worrying about her being out in that awful weather today.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 15/11/2022 21:42

I'm sorry you have no news yet. One of mine disappeared for over a week once and then just came in through the cat flap like nothing had happened. It's an awful feeling when you don't know what's happened. I really hope she comes back home soon

Glumbums · 15/11/2022 22:07

They are quite good at finding shelter if it rains. Could your cat be somewhere a tall red brick wall? I'm a bit intuitive and that's what I see.

Glumbums · 15/11/2022 22:07

*near a tall red brick wall.

PushkaMcgee · 16/11/2022 10:19

@Glumbums I’ll have a look in the area just in case, thank you. I’m willing to try anything. I did realise there is a small wooded area not far from my house that I haven’t looked through yet so will do that today.

it sounds very melodramatic but what I’m finding so incredibly hard is that I feel so alone in my constant worry and sadness. My children (grown up) are of course very worried too but ultimate they don’t live at home anymore and so, obviously, the pain of our cat not being about isn’t quite so upsetting. So I’m finding the help and support in here incredibly kind, thank you x

I second emptying the hoover in front and back gardens. Really toss it about. And flyering lamp posts. Our cat came back on day 5, and 2 days after we did the above

PushkaMcgee · 16/11/2022 10:22

@Blowyourowntrumpet thank you, stories like yours keep me hopeful. I’m so pleased your cat came back to you 🐱

Is your cat chipped? Have you checked the chip is registered to your address?

Honestly don't give up hope. Mine got in the back of a van and turned up 12 miles away a couple of months later.

I hope you don't have to wait that long. I do get the worry - it's horrible.

Contact all local vets, if you have parks/common land nearby, poster in the car park. They do turn up days, weeks even a year later! Don't give up hope. Whilst it's for dogs, people list cats on dogs lost here, had good results as dog owners are out later in the evening when a cat may be hunting
