My Cat has been missing 2 days - Any more ideas on what I can do?

I'm a complete mess, my cat went missing very early hours of Friday morning. She must have gone out of the cat flap and for some reason didn't do her usual jump on my bed on her return, instead, she just hasn't returned.

She's 7 and when she was 2 used to go AWOL at times but since then has been a real homey cat and never goes far, hence me not locking the cat flap on Thursday night (which I feel so guilty about).

I've put her details all over Facebook, local groups and lost and found groups too. Put out some posters, been out early this morning and called for her and told everyone in my street to look in their sheds etc. Now I've run out of ideas and feel so useless not doing anything that might help bring her back.

She's been my one constant companion the past few years and I'm a wreck without her (I live on my own) and guess I'm just clutching at straws in case anyone has any ideas of what I can do, or even some hope that she will return soon. Thank you x

I’m so sorry :( if it was me I’d be putting up a lot of posters as that’s probably your best bet as people around the area might recognise him.

Didicat · 13/11/2022 17:19

Have you tried putting out your dirty laundry on the line and her litter tray so if she’s confused she can scent her way home?

have you phoned all the vets in case she’s been handed in?

walk around at 2am or when it’s super quiet and call her name quietly and see if she cries back to you if she’s stuck in a garage or shed nearby?

Clymene · 13/11/2022 17:34

Go out and call her in the middle of the night with some dreamies. Walk around and listen.

Most of them come home. Hope your girl does too.

JudithHarper · 13/11/2022 17:38

I just hope that she comes home very soon.

RinklyRomaine · 13/11/2022 17:39

My cat went missing last week. We did much the same. Go out and call when it's quiet so you have a chance of hearing each other. Late and early. Try emptying the hoover in your garden. We leafleted through the doors, which led to a call that someone had seen her in their back garden. We then leafleted the road behind them, and had more calls. Further leafleting and someone caught her for us yesterday. Be warned, I keep hearing of people getting vicious prank calls from posters on lampposts. Good luck, it's hideous feeling so bloody helpless.

Clymene · 13/11/2022 17:59

Be prepared to go and see a lot of cars that aren't yours. I leafleted a massive area. Handy tip if you're doing leaflets, take a wooden spoon to poke through the letter box. The springs on a lot of them will bruise your hand after about 20 doors otherwise

Clymene · 13/11/2022 17:59

Cats! Not cars

PushkaMcgee · 13/11/2022 18:04

Thank you everyone for the tips. Hanging dirty washing on the line is a good idea. I've put her bed and litter tray outside the house and I'll do some more posters tomorrow.

Thank you @Clymene for the wooden spoon tip, great idea.

@RinklyRomaine that's awful that people prank call from posters, there are some nasty folk around. I'm so pleased you got your cat back home safely.

I miss her so much, I haven't cried this much for years.

It's very dark where I live, with little street lighting so it's not so easy to go out late at night but I'll go for another walk nearby tonight with dreamies and my torch.

Definitely try putting something of hers, with her seventh on the washing line. One of our cats was missing for 3 days and shecame back after I had put her (unwashed) blanket on the washing line. I jped that she'd smell 'home'

PeloFondo · 13/11/2022 18:16

I did a small flyer through as many doors as I could manage (think I did nearly 400 houses on my own) Blush
Also if you have a local group of teens that mooch about wearing black offer them a reward

After 8 days mine turned up mid morning with my neighbour yelling "OLLIE IS HERE, quick get some dreamies"

EcoCustard · 13/11/2022 18:17

If you have any industrial units or sheds in the area speak to them, ask them to check or let you in case she has been locked in over the weekend. My cat used to go awol, often locked in a nearby industrial unit. She also ended up in Ipswich after stowing away on a lorry. We lived in Lincolnshire. She also stowed away in DH’s work van, he didn’t find her until at Scotch Corner en route to Aberdeen. I hope your cat is home soon, the worry and not knowing is awful.

PeloFondo · 13/11/2022 18:18

Found my old thread, this is what I did

FB
Twitter
Instagram
He is now listed with out of hours vets as missing, local vets and cats protection aware
RSPCA contacted
Council emailed
Listed on majority of missing websites
Posters up on posts and local shop
Posted on local community centre pages and schools. Sheltered housing near me are aware
Checked empty house nearby
Flyers through every door with a shed
Ice cream van has poster
Postman aware

PushkaMcgee · 13/11/2022 18:30

Thank you everyone for the messages and more things for me to do. There are no industrial units but there are some farms so I'll pop in a leaflet to them tomorrow just in case.

I'll try and get a load of flyers printed off tomorrow (oh for the days when I could use the photocopier at work!).

I've been there. Its desperately worrying Door to door leaflets. Flyers on lamp posts, bus shelters, local shops
Searching and calling at night / early morning when it's quiet.
Litter and bedding left outside ( unless it's raining)
Most cats make it home if they've strayed beyond their usual patch. Their sense of smell and homing urge is strong
Sending hugs Flowers

Carlycat · 13/11/2022 19:11

Just a heads up heads up if you include your phone details. I had several vile sadistic phone calls when I lost my cat. All from young males ( twats 😡 )

I had a few of those
Mostly I just said "oh ok, I'm sorry as there was a big reward, bye"
Tended to take the wind out of them a bit Grin

Carlycat · 13/11/2022 19:31

@PeloFondo
Tbh I was too traumatised at the time but I'll definitely winds the scrotey twats up if it ever happens again

I didn't quite know what else to do apart from put my phone number on as obviously if someone does spot my cat I'd like to know asap.

Thank you again everyone, I've just had a walk about again, stupidly didn't wear any hi-vis which wasn't very clever of me, luckily had my bright neon torch. I'm just praying she'll waltz through the cat flap very soon.

Go around your local area and call her. Can be day or night. Their hearing is very good so that's what usually works. Do you have any woods or green areas nearby?

reallyworriedjobhunter · 13/11/2022 19:42

Local FB pet owners groups are good at spotting lost pets. Do you have a street/local WhatsApp group? Can you ask neighbours to check their garages and sheds?

My cat does this from time to time. We got him a Tractive tracker which helps me worry less and be able to go and get him when he doesn't come home. He sometimes takes it off but we persevere.

I hope she comes home soon.

Craftybodger · 13/11/2022 19:53

Also place the contents of your hoover outside - adds to the smells they’re familiar with to find their way home.

RumNotRun · 13/11/2022 20:11

I put a big poster in my window as lots of people walk down my street. It worked as a local dog walker mentioned it on their WhatsApp group and someone on the next street had my cat in their shed.

Another occasion (same cat) she was found by someone else and taken to a local rescue, so if you haven't tried already, speak to any rescues in your area/nearby.

It's horrible when they go missing, I really hope she comes home soon, acting like nothing has happened and wondering why you're so enthusiastic at her return.
