I know this may be subjective but in your opinion which type of cat is the most laid back/loving?

I hear black cats maybe?

Over many cats I can with confidence say, it's not predictable from colour or when they are kittens.

I currently have 1 black cat who is definitely loving - possibly too much so when we are woken at 4am as she wants to climb under the duvet with us. Laid back - not remotely, if she was a human she'd be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

My Arabian Mau is both loving and laid back - he takes everything in his stride. However he also thinks he should be allowed outside all the time so everyone else in the village can love him and spends his days walking into other people's house and eating their cat food.

It all depends on the cat really.

Rescue cats where they know they have landed on their feet.

BUT, the most amazing cat story I have is a ferra Mum, who used to bring her kittens to our back door for food. Then we moved a couple of doors down, and they 'lost' us. About a month later, one of her grown up kittens followed me home one day, and brought his Mum to our house the next day! Might not be the loving story you are after, but it shows a great deal of trust and recognition!

I've got a ginger girl, twice rescued. She loves lap sitting and following me around, pretty standard loving cat behaviour.

Sometimes though she will be on my lap, wake from a nap, and just stare at me for a few seconds like she can't believe her luck, and then rush up to my chest for a long cuddle and for me to kiss her forehead, before resuming normal lap sitting.

My black cat is incredibly loving and loves cuddles, I adore him.

Ragdolls - look for a breeder raising a small number of kittens (e.g. one litter) in a home environment. Avoid full-on pedigree versions with flatter faces.

Maine Coons generally love children and will play like a dog. We have a Maine'Mix

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 05/11/2022 12:59

I've got a long-haired ginger neutered male and he's an aggressive little arsehole.

glassfully · 05/11/2022 13:32

My Maine coon is very cuddly, follows DH around the house like a dog and likes to play fetch which is adorable. My British shorthair is rarely affectionate. She likes to sit next to us but gets the hump if we touch her without being invited to.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 06/11/2022 19:50

Our angora girl is the sweetest thing, she is very vocal and loves company, to the point she follows us around constantly. Our tortie girl is a completely different character all together! 😁

Angliski · 08/07/2023 09:15

Always boy cats

turkish vans and gingers generally very friendly

AnnaMagnani · 08/07/2023 09:40

Have had 2 black cats.

One was v loving when she felt like it but would have months when we only saw her for meals.

The other is very loving, absolutely obsessed with us, but is a neurotic, territorial mess.

Amazingly my rescue Mau, who is ferociously independent and beats up the neighbourhood, comes home and is very soppy. Always comes upstairs at bed time as he is lonely on his own and puts up with the madness of the black cat. I think he knows he is on to a good thing.

whirlyhead · 08/07/2023 09:47

I have the biggest softie of a birman boy who lives to be cuddled. He just melts in your arms. My birman girls are far more independent though they will agree to lean against you but no sitting on laps. Or being picked up.

I also have a male birman who hates everyone but he’s a breeding disaster area (I think he has some pitbull in him)

CurlewKate · 08/07/2023 09:49

I think it usually (not always) depends on how they were treated as tiny kittens.

Sarvanga38 · 08/07/2023 09:53

Norwegian Forest Cats are very laid back.

No colour is going to be generically laid back, it will depend on what it is made up of.

FuppingEll · 08/07/2023 09:53

We had a sphynx who was the most laid back, affectionate, amazing cat I've ever had. He was just wonderful. I could scoop him up for a cuddle anytime, anywhere and he would happily oblige. I cried for weeks and weeks when lost him, he really was very special.

LeMoo · 08/07/2023 10:03

I've had over a dozen cats, some rescues, some not and agree that colour seems irrelevant. So does gender- of the most loving cats some have been male, others female.

bitnervousaboutthis · 08/07/2023 10:14

Rescue adult cat so you can meet them and know their personality in advance, only way to guarantee it I just don't think cats are like dogs in terms of breed equating specific personality traits

Saverage · 08/07/2023 12:58

I have a girl ginger cat, she is extremely loving, demands a cuddle whenever possible. Flipside is I wouldn't call her laidback, at all, she's pretty neurotic and demanding (twice rescue).

orangeyeahthatsright · 08/07/2023 13:01

Another vote for Maine Coons. We've owned four over the years and they are amazing, mostly very placid, laid-back and friendly cats. (Our present incumbent is a bit more highly strung, but I think he's probably the exception that proves the rule. 😁)

Toddlerteaplease · 08/07/2023 13:09

Persians!!!! Cheddar is always demanding a cuddle.

CurlewKate · 08/07/2023 14:46

I didn't believe the publicity about orange cats-until I had one! He's very loving-but defines batshit. I read somewhere that because orange cats are mostly male, they're daft because the few female ones have all the brain cells!

LookingForFreeDoughnuts · 08/07/2023 15:13

It depends on their upbringing/socialisation as kittens. I don't think breed is as significant as this. I have a bog standard moggie who is absolutely bomb-proof, friendly, calm, laid-back, and offers cuddles when you're unwell or sad. I adopted her and her mum when she was a nursing kitten, so she grew up with her mum around, as well as in a busy household of noisy children. Couldn't ask for a better cat. (Her mum was brilliant also, sadly we lost her young)

riotlady · 08/07/2023 15:31

I have black rescues and they are excessively loving!

Also plain black cats are the least adopted (combo of superstition and being less “pretty”/instagrammable) just in case that tugs on your heart strings

heartsinvisiblefury · 08/07/2023 15:33

My black neutered male cat was the friendliest cat ever, closely followed by a tuxedo neutered male. My female cats however were miserable.

Fairymother · 08/07/2023 17:12

We uave a dark brown burmese. Can be cuddled and carried around like a baby all day. Kids push him around in doll prams and dress him in doll clothes 🙈
He loves the attention.

Furries · 09/07/2023 04:49

I think this thread proves that cats are master manipulators - each of them persuading their slave that they are the best 🤣

Caspianberg · 09/07/2023 05:09

We have two. Brother (ginger) and sister (tabby), rescued as kittens after someone binned then.
Both brought up together the same, both indoors only the first year. Both were cuddly lap cats.

4 years on. Tabby sister is now basically 99% outside cat, only comes inside for food. Ginger brother remains calm and cuddly, goes to anyone, has been great with Ds through baby and toddler years. Both cats neutered as kittens
