Heartbroken after my little vegetable was put to sleep this morning

This is my first mN post
My cat was put to sleep this morning and I'm in pieces.
He was only 2.5 years old and I loved him like a child (no human children)
It happened all of a sudden - he had seemed poorly only since Monday and vets didn't seem unduly concerned.
Can anyone offer any advice. I just can't stop crying.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

What a lovely face.

It’s utterly heartbreaking when we have to say goodbye to them. You grieve the way you need to.

VirgilStarkwell · 09/12/2021 22:31

I’m so sorry 😞.

Would you like to share a picture and tell us more about him?

What sort of ‘vegetable’ was the little chap?

Hugs to you.

VirgilStarkwell · 09/12/2021 22:32

Oh bless his heart, he is absolutely beautiful.

Noseylittlemoo · 09/12/2021 22:34

Thank you @MoonbeamSprinkles and @VirgilStarkwell
His name was Parsnip - nickname "parpy cat". Probs gives me away but hopefully not controversial.
He was the most affectionate cat I have ever known.

I am really sorry for your loss, and hope you have lots of photos and memories of the years you did have with him (maybe put a photo in a nice frame?). I do think that is perfectly normal to be really upset, and to cry about it too, so don't be too hard on yourself. From what you say, you did your best for him too - did the vet offer any suggestion as to what might have happened (that sometimes helps)? In time you will possibly be able to have another pet who brings you the same joy, but maybe don't rush into that until you feel a bit less emotional than you do just now. Take care.

pipiandbelle · 09/12/2021 22:38

Oh no- I’m so sorry for your loss. I am
A cat lover and I can understand how heartbroken you must be. I lost my lovely cat last January and was lost for a few weeks. I couldn’t stop crying or thinking about her. Slowly over time it becomes less in your forefront of your mind but it is so hard. I find taking to cat lovers most helpful at these times as they understand. Take care and RIP parsnip. He looks so sweet ❤️

ISpyCobraKai · 09/12/2021 22:39

I'm so sorry.
They are such a big part of our lives and it's heart breaking to lose them
Parsnip looks adorable, great name too, I love unique names for pets.

AmberLynn1536 · 09/12/2021 22:39

I’m so very sorry, it’s utterly heartbreaking and must be even harder because there was no warning and he was so young. You are in shock as well as grieving, the Blue Cross have a bereavement helpline, it may be worth contacting them if you are struggling, it must be extra hard for you, trying to make sense of it all.

VirgilStarkwell · 09/12/2021 22:40

Parsnip is such a cute name! I was thinking he’s part carrot and part parsnip.

I was devastated to say goodbye to my cat (a few years ago), and he was a total dickhead. A good cuddler when he felt like it though.

MaryChristmouse · 09/12/2021 22:41

He's so beautiful- and fluffy!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 09/12/2021 22:42

You cry. Cry yourself to sleep. Wake up. Cry again. Et repetez.

And then you think of a happy time, and you smile. And you cry again. And in time you remember with more smiles than tears.

It is hard. No question. My dog was my saviour. My everything. And when she went I was lost. I didn’t get to say goodbye - it was that quick.

But I can think of her now without sobbing and I nearly always think of her with a smile.

They teach you so much about love and can bring you so much joy, it is hard to take that they’ve gone.

There is no magic solution but time.

But you found eachother and your wee veggie knew love. ✨ think of that for the hard bits.

Workinghardeveryday · 09/12/2021 22:42

I am so sorry for your loss xx.

It is heartbreaking to loose them. You clearly loved him very much and no doubt he had a lovely life and spoilt rotten which sadly a lot of our furry friends don’t ever get. You made his life such a happy one xx

mistermagpie · 09/12/2021 22:43

God I'm so sorry. It's awful. I've lost many cats over the years and it does get easier, I promise. My last one I lost very quickly like you - he was off his food on the Wednesday and dead by the Friday, it was a terrible shock. Give yourself time to grieve, they are family and it's normal to feel the loss.

I did get another cat quite quickly but that was mainly because I still have the brother of the one who died and his grief was worse than mine. He's a skinny thing anyway, always been underweight, but he stopped eating and I thought I would lose him too.

mistermagpie · 09/12/2021 22:44

Parsnip was beautiful by the way and what a great name!!

MyDogTails · 09/12/2021 22:46

I’m so sorry - it must be a terrible shock..

spiderlight · 09/12/2021 22:50

What a gorgeous little chap. I'm so sorry. It's awful when it's so sudden.

EffYouSeeKaye · 09/12/2021 22:51

Flowers I’m so sorry for your loss.

mumofEandE · 09/12/2021 22:52

He is beautiful!

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 09/12/2021 22:52

What a beautiful boy he was.
So sorry for you op - there is nothing worse than losing a beloved pet

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 09/12/2021 22:53

I had my old boy die back in 2011. He was 19 and due to a really shit childhood and school life, he was my best friend. I adored him. He hated everyone but me. If we ever got McDonald's he would share my fries. He died of old age, I knew it was coming for a few days. He got slower and slower. I still miss him so much. I found an old picture of him in the loft not long ago. I cried. I brought my now dh home to meet parents and he curled up on dh's lap. That's how I knew dh was a good un.

Noseylittlemoo · 09/12/2021 22:55

Thank you for your kind thoughts. I'm thinking of making a scrapbook or photo album as have lots of photos .
Maybe in a month or too when it's not so raw

I'm sorry. He looks so alert and interesting. No doubt he was aware that he was loved.

Enough4me · 10/12/2021 00:04

Cats are often super bossy and control us, but they also love being adored. I bet he had a great time with you OP. Sorry for your loss Flowers
