Cat is old, never had fleas and I forgot a spot on treatment this year. Realised too late when an adult flea was found and my dd had bites. This was about four weeks ago.

I have : done the spot on, rung the vet, hoovered more, washed the non material things like sofa in washing up liquid, chucked a bean bag, washed and packed up the cushions, and sprayed everything soft like curtains and a chair with spray.
Also combed the cat with not comb.
Stopped this as though all was good and then three fleas on her yesterday. Flea treated her again. Vet no ideas just keep on.
Any other advice? Many thanks.

What flea treatment are you using?
Indorex is supposed to be good for the house.
You do also need to hoover to encourage eggs to hatch so the baby fleas can get killed too

peridito · 09/10/2021 09:16

Sorry to piggy back but came on to ask about the best spot on flea treatment .

Is there one that kills eggs on the cat as well as live fleas ?

dementedpixie · 09/10/2021 09:19

I use stronghold plus that I get from the vet.
The only OTC one that is supposed to be effective is Advantage. Otherwise speak to your vet

dementedpixie · 09/10/2021 09:19

P.s. most eggs are in the environment, not on the cat

SoupDragon · 09/10/2021 09:22

Indorex for the house is very effective.

I think my cats are on Stronghold and though I've missed the occasional does we have never had a problem with fleas (yet!). A previous cat was on Advocate. Frontline is ineffective.

SwanShaped · 09/10/2021 09:22

In our area Frontline doesn’t work. So use stronghold or advantage. The vet nurse said that she went to a flea conference (!) and learnt that after a while the flea larvae will start to die. They live in the carpet and eat dead skin cells. The cats shedded skin cells will have the stronghold stuff in them so will also kill the larvae but it’ll take a few weeks for that to happen. And frontline is useless

Noeuf · 09/10/2021 09:30

Oh that’s really interesting re Frontline. I think we’ve usually used that and then I’ve bought Bob Martin this time. None in her today and I’ll Hoover later. Any other tips? Or just persistence?

SwanShaped · 09/10/2021 09:34

Bob Martin is shit too. Get stronghold or advantage from the vet. If your vet doesn’t stock them then you’ll need to buy from an online vet pharmacist. You will need your vet to write a prescription though and scan it in before the online shop will sell it to you. And it’s pricy! But worth it.

dementedpixie · 09/10/2021 09:36

Advantage isn't prescription only so you can buy it from places like pets at home. Stronghold and Advocate are prescription only
Don't use Bob Martin anything; it's crap

peridito · 09/10/2021 09:38

Is Advantage as good as Advocate ? If poss I'd like to avoid a trip to the vets .

dementedpixie · 09/10/2021 09:40

Advantage has the same flea killing ingredient as Advocate. Advocate also kills some worms which is why its a prescription only product.

peridito · 09/10/2021 09:41

thank you so much demented .Smile

blissfulllife · 09/10/2021 09:42

Indorex for house and advantage flea treatment for the cat finally sorted it for our cat

FairyHuck · 09/10/2021 09:45

Bob Martin and frontline are rubbish ime

I now subscribe to ItchPet monthly and buy indorex every other month just to be sure. My cats hunt (we're very rural) but my dog is allergic to fleas so if she gets them it's horrendous for her. I've used itchpet for about 6/7 months now and I've seen none on her. You must thoroughly do the house too though unfortunately, that's just as important as the spot on treatment

Noeuf · 09/10/2021 09:52

Urgh. So by ‘thoroughly doing the house’ what does that mean? Cat doesn’t go upstairs so can I just Hoover and was bedding up there?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 09/10/2021 09:55

@FairyHuck m surprised Itch pet works as it contains fipronil which is the same as frontline

inmyslippers · 09/10/2021 09:56

I'd bin any of their bedding. Indorex the house repeatedly and invest in front line plush

Kerzehmet · 09/10/2021 09:59

The lady in pets at home the other week advised me to:
Hoover
Take the hoover outside and empty it
Spray the filter of the hoover with flea spray
Treat the house
Hoover again and re-treat the hoover

Because otherwise whatever you hoover up, just lives in the hoover and hops all around again.

But also yes, Bob Martin is shit. And the frontline house spray is dangerous to cats I think, double check what you want to use before you buy. I have to say pets at home were really helpful.

I feel your pain op, fleas give me the proper ick and rage.

dementedpixie · 09/10/2021 09:59

OP has been using Frontline and found its not working so she'd be better using a different more effective product

AnnaMagnani · 09/10/2021 10:02

Bob Martin is rubbish. You also need the spray for the carpets from the vet - they tell you to spray it round the edges but this is a lie, spray it EVERYWHERE. Probably more than once and include the hoover.

FairyHuck · 09/10/2021 10:04

No idea @dementedpixie, different dose maybe? Maybe it's the regular indorex that's helping, maybe we've just been lucky this year

ItsSnowJokes · 09/10/2021 10:05

Advantage or advocate are the best preventative treatments for fleas, however you need to spray the house now you have fleas. Indorex spray and hoover every 2 days to break the egg cycle.

gamerchick · 09/10/2021 10:09

Cut up a flea collar and stick it in your hoover bag. Hoover around the edges of every room in the house section by section and spray straight after with indorex. Ideally the same time as you treat the cat.

Get some proper spot on from the vet and be religious about treating the cat every month.

Don't spray the cat with indorex and don't have it around while you spray that stuff.

Dodie66 · 09/10/2021 10:31

Get advocate from the vet. Nothing else worked. Also hoover daily
