Cat is old, never had fleas and I forgot a spot on treatment this year. Realised too late when an adult flea was found and my dd had bites. This was about four weeks ago.

I have : done the spot on, rung the vet, hoovered more, washed the non material things like sofa in washing up liquid, chucked a bean bag, washed and packed up the cushions, and sprayed everything soft like curtains and a chair with spray.
Also combed the cat with not comb.
Stopped this as though all was good and then three fleas on her yesterday. Flea treated her again. Vet no ideas just keep on.
Any other advice? Many thanks.

Spray the house with Indorex. Advocate, advantage and frontline don't work in my area. Bravecto is better, spot on treatment every three months.

Lonecatwithkitten · 09/10/2021 10:50

@FairyHuck

No idea *@dementedpixie*, different dose maybe? Maybe it's the regular indorex that's helping, maybe we've just been lucky this year
Itch Pet, Effipro and some otherwise are basically generic frontline. I like Bravecto where there is a flea problem lasts 3 months reduces the need to remember treatment.
Notdoingthis · 09/10/2021 13:39

Ours came to us with fleas and we were self isolating at the time so couldn't get to the vets. Advantage didn't work. As soon as we got prescription stuff from the vets the fleas went. Keep on with the environmental stuff but do get hold of decent medication too.

Noeuf · 09/10/2021 14:10

Ok will get some indorex. I already have furniture spray and cat spray. Hoovered again today and wiped the inside of the container with anti bac wipes. Can’t do the cat again as did her neck with Bob Martin yesterday. Will get advocat?

Noeuf · 09/10/2021 14:12

Oh also will bin bedding and buy blanket for sofa so can wash more often.

SmartCar · 09/10/2021 14:15

Cover your sofa In baking powder leave it over night and hoover then do it again in 2 days. Also your beds if cat sleeps there

ofwarren · 09/10/2021 14:19

We have 6 cats who all ended up with fleas.
We got bravecto from the vets, indorex for the house and 2 flea traps from Amazon.
We hoovered and indorexed everywhere and within 3 days they were all gone.

Noeuf · 09/10/2021 14:22

Really? I thought we’d done it but it’s a nightmare again - three fleas yesterday none today and I’m doing a massive clean now - all surfaces floors furniture pulled out. We don’t have any carpet downstairs at all. Cat doesn’t go upstairs but I’ll wash the bedding and Hoover up there.

ofwarren · 09/10/2021 20:36

Bob Martin and frontline didn't work at all on my cats and the vet said they don't work because fleas are now immune to the ingredients.
Only prescription stuff worked for us.

Noeuf · 09/10/2021 21:39

Ok I’m going to ring the vets on Monday. Just combed the cat and three adult fleas plus about ten small egg/spots. Fgs this is nightmarish.

OP posts:
SwanShaped · 09/10/2021 21:47

Oh that’s grim. Once you get the right flea stuff it won’t take long to sort out.

Noeuf · 09/10/2021 22:06

Thank you. Honestly we’ve really been trying these last couple weeks. Hoovering, wiping, combing etc

OP posts:
SwanShaped · 10/10/2021 09:20

The hoovering etc doesn’t work really, I’m sure you’ve been meticulous. You just need the right flea stuff so that you stop the little fuckers from breeding. Then once all the eggs have hatched, new fleas will arrive but they’ll be killed before they get the chance to breed. Fleas have a four week birth to laying eggs cycle so you need to keep putting the flea stuff on every four weeks until the problem is sorted.

Noeuf · 10/10/2021 09:52

Swanshaped literally spent from 8.30 to 6.30 cleaning yesterday. All cat bedding chucked, floors hoovered, surfaces wiped, cupboards cleared out. I’ve gone back to check and you’ve said Advantage or Advocate? Which offers have said. I’ll try Pets at Home today and the vet tomorrow.

OP posts:
SwanShaped · 10/10/2021 10:54

I think there’s a few. Pets at Home won’t be any good coz you need a prescription for the good ones. Which you can only get from the vet.

dementedpixie · 10/10/2021 11:07

Pets at home sell Advantage which has the same flea killing ingredient as Advocate (advocate kills some worms too). It is a decent one to use if you can't get to a vet

Noeuf · 10/10/2021 12:54

Ok I can only get to the range today so in addition to the two sprays I bought before I’m adding beaphor which has methoprene and pyrethins/ permethins and you spray the whole floor.

Tinpotspectator · 10/10/2021 17:27

I do know that if you spray, skirting boards and edges of rooms are even more important than the carpet itself. I had my house flea treated by professionals one warm summer years ago, after the baby was bitten, and that's what they said. Because of the baby I had decamped! Anyway it worked.

Noeuf · 10/10/2021 19:01

Thank you - I’ve done three rooms (all vinyl or tiles) and closed the door for 30mins etc. Also sprayed the edges and 1/2 meter up the wall. Did the first step of the carpeted stairs. Tonight am going to do the open plan hall and dining room (through room) and leave. That will be all of it fingers crossed. No fleas on cat today. Also sprayed flowerbed she sleeps on.

I dogsat for a friend of a friend once (or more accurately had their dogs in my house for an emergency). Ended up with fleas.

ALL soft furnishings (bar carpets and sofa) washed on a hot wash, everything thoroughly vacuumed, and liberal spraying of Indorex everywhere (I got through several cans). Sorted it but expensive.

In theory, if you use a good-quality spot on eventually all the fleas will hatch, bite dcat and die anyway, but it takes time.

As others have said, frontline isn't great. Advantage works ok for us.

Good luck. It's horrible. Flowers

Resilience · 12/10/2021 22:33

Alternatively, flea bomb from local pest control.

AC2022 · 12/10/2021 22:41

Flea bombs are the only thing that worked for us. We wasted a good month trying spray, hoovering etc.

One tip that worked in finding the fleas stronghold was to put bowls of water down overnight and do a body count in the morning. It also helped to monitor the numbers for progress, we knew the bombs had worked because there were fewer fleas in the bowls each day.

Noeuf · 12/10/2021 22:48

Oh revolting, not sure I can cope with flea soup first thing!
I’ve used the beaphor spray in all the rooms downstairs and upstairs except the upstairs loo and downstairs hall (tiles). All furnishing and curtain sprayed. Cat now treats the tick comb like a bloody spa day and falls asleep as I do it. None today or yesterday, tiny amount of flea dirt Envy (not envy) and I’m hoovering every other day.
Need to get hold of vet again for decent stuff due to Covid they are reduced hours and I work so will try again tomorrow.
Would hate someone else’s fleas Resilience! Bad enough my own!

Noeuf · 14/10/2021 21:41

Oh dear god two fleas on her today. I’ve sprayed all the downstairs etc a few days ago it’s meant to last 12 weeks. I’ve done another Bob Martin (i know! I need to get to the vet) on her just now and one a week ago. Also 20.09. I’m exhausted.
I’m so tired by this. I’ve four kids, there’s some significant SEND and it’s just another battle. I’ve hoovered again, washed towels.

OP posts:
Noeuf · 14/10/2021 21:42

Also lost a flea as the tick comb doesn’t kill them so it escaped. God knows where it’s breeding now.
