Hope re getting rid of fleas?

Cat is old, never had fleas and I forgot a spot on treatment this year. Realised too late when an adult flea was found and my dd had bites. This was about four weeks ago.

I have : done the spot on, rung the vet, hoovered more, washed the non material things like sofa in washing up liquid, chucked a bean bag, washed and packed up the cushions, and sprayed everything soft like curtains and a chair with spray.
Also combed the cat with not comb.
Stopped this as though all was good and then three fleas on her yesterday. Flea treated her again. Vet no ideas just keep on.
Any other advice? Many thanks.

Yes, what pixie said. Plus vet has said can’t prescribe as not seen in person for a year. So need to take in now all up and running.
Yes house is gleaming Grin. I’ll buy some more - they said it would last ages and I’ve run out. I don’t really trust it to last with all the washing etc. Plus the whole downstairs took almost a whole can.

Oh dear god unforgettable this is not what I need to hear!!!

Noeuf · 20/10/2021 21:46

@peridito seeing them on cat, nowhere else. Originally big fleas now flea dirt and tiny fleas. Not so many, but still grim.

Bravecto works very well. Expensive but lasts for months.

Noeuf · 20/10/2021 21:46

Thanks - I’ve seen a collar that says it lasts for seven months. Was going to ask the vet.

dementedpixie · 20/10/2021 21:52

I wouldn't use a collar tbh
If Bob Martin contains fipronil then it's just Frontline by another name and that has been ineffective in some areas against fleas

Noeuf · 20/10/2021 21:58

I think it’s called Serestro but haven’t bought one. Glad you all promoted me to check with the vet or I’d still be trying to manage with the Bob Martin and hoovering.

I have bites on my forehead and my head was soooo intensely itchy so I googled it. They’re vile I’m bitten everywhere.

lisaandalan · 20/10/2021 22:46

@ofwarren Thank you.

Needspace21 · 20/10/2021 23:04

Cedercide is a non toxic option you could try too.

Noeuf · 23/10/2021 18:03

Thank you
A flea upstairs just now. Suspect came up with ironing dh did in the conservatory. He doesn’t think so just had all the clothes on the soft benches there. I could kill him.
Indorex all used up ffs last bit just now.
Ordered three more from Amazon to come Weds.

Indorex spray. Best stuff ever!
Moved into a house. Previous tenant had a few cats. I spot on'd mine but didn't think of the house. I had a massive outbreak when it warmed up. I was riddled in bites(luckily my dc are immune) tried allsorts of remedies. Bought the spray and it worked in seconds!! Literally spray and all dead. Then you just hoover. Lasts about 6 months. I use it every year now even though I spot my cats.

Noeuf · 23/10/2021 18:24

I wish. If you look back, I bought it from the vet recently (£25!) and sprayed it everywhere she is - nothing is working.

You need to have advocate or advantage on repeat order and apply it monthly.

Cat should not have had fleas all this time.

Noeuf · 23/10/2021 18:35

Yes we missed one, used super market (Bob Martin) can’t get it on order until the vet sees her (next week) so currently losing the battle using Indorex and a flea comb.

‘ Q: I used Indorex a few days ago and there are still fleas jumping around!

A: Flea pupae are unaffected by any insecticide flea spray. These pupae can survive in the house for over 12 months but do hatch in response to vibration, especially in warm humid weather. These newly hatched fleas will be killed within 24 hours by Indorex for up to 2 months after application. The hatching process can be accelerated with warmth and vibration by:’

From the indorex page. I don’t understand why we still have them

@Noeuf how is it going ? Are you winning ?

earsup · 27/10/2021 21:16

We had cat fleas and dont have a cat...one wandered into kitchen one day...took 2 months...4 cans of indorex, one can of rip fleas....constant cleaning and spraying...the eggs can be immune so wait for life cycle for them to hatch so thats why you need to keep at it...awful things...i spent about 80 quid in total...vets are a rip off...all items cheaper on ebay etc.

TacoTues · 27/10/2021 21:17

Indirect for your house.

Seresto collar on all cats and dogs.

I'm not a collar fan. But they're incredible. Haven't seen a flea, flea dirt or ticks in over a year. Before then we were never 100% clear of gleans.

Noeuf · 28/10/2021 21:51

@peridito ah thank you for thinking of me and my flea ridden house 😂 vet today so she’s been checked and is very well and has had one dose of flea treatment from them. Flea dirt, no fleas. Have not seen a live flea since the bedroom panic, and have also bought three more cans of Indorex, two of which are left.

I am hopeful that the tide is turning but haven’t stopped cleaning and spraying etc as I’m very concerned they are waiting, suspended, until they crack out again.
Someone upthread said they spray yearly and I think I might do this.
Also tempted to think about the collars again.

Glad you're winning @Noeuf.What an epic journey you've had .

I rushed off to google those Seresto collars ( our cat ,like another poster's "knocks about with the foxes "in the untended plot next door to us ) but was disappointed to read such mixed reviews .

Be good to hear more experiences from MNetters .

Noeuf · 29/10/2021 09:10

Yes fingers crossed. Will be meticulous with spotting for fleas and worms and ban BM from the house! Going to keep hoovering and washing on hot for now as I know they can multiply if one escapes my regime…

For those who use Itch Pet..... I've been using it for over a year and found very large adult fleas on my cat today.

I have cancelled my subscription and he has been to the vets to get the good stuff. I'm annoyed as I've been more thorough with his flea treatment than ever and it hasn't worked!

Also he barely goes out nowadays 🤷‍♀️

dementedpixie · 30/10/2021 09:16

Itch Pet uses fipronil which is what's in frontline. Fipronil doesn't always work well in some areas

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 30/10/2021 09:21

Don't overdo the spot on as it can be neurotoxic.

Flea eggs can last 17 years in the environment.

Use Indorex but them don't vacuum clean for as many days after as you can bear not to as it works much better if you leave it down.

The reason fleas are so hard to get rid of is insecticides often only kill the adults but for every adult there is a mass of egg pupae and larval stages in the cats environment all ready to move to the next stage.

Spraying with Indorex and hoovering it up the next day will reduce it's effectiveness down to 10%.
